Brits Invade Kaslo
On Sunday, the weekend after
Labour Day each year, the Brits
invade Water Street in Kaslo in the
form of a ‘Show and Shine’, of charm-
ing vintage English autos. This year,
the show is September 8. This event
is produced by the Kootenay branch
of the Old English Car Club of BC.
The Kaslo show is a favorite
because of the spectacular scenery
and the very geneous prizes, donated
by local merchant sponsors. In turn,
the club donates all proceeds to the
Kaslo Search and Rescue.

Creative writing program instructors Leesa Dean (left)
and Almeda Glenn Miller will be offering a pair of insight-
ful and inspiring courses in the fall semester.
Course focuses on results for writers
Writing a book can be a lonely endeavour. That’s why
this fall, a Selkirk College second-year creative writing
course will focus on manuscript development. Open to
both full-time and community learners, writers will have
the opportunity to share their books-in-progress with
peers and receive professional feedback from course
instructor, writer and editor Leesa Dean.
“I wish a course like this had existed when I was fin-
ishing my first book,” says Dean, author of the critically
acclaimed short story collection Waiting for the Cyclone.
“I started writing it in a Master’s program, but once that
was finished, I found it difficult to continue. Without a
community of peers, deadlines and editors to read my
work, I found about a thousand other things to do with
my time.”
Students will meet every second Thursday for two hours
in either Nelson or Castlegar and the rest of the course
takes place online. The model was designed to maximize
writing time and appeal to regional writers who may oth-
erwise be deterred by weekly or bi-weekly travel.
From September 5 to December 12, students enrolled
in Creative Writing 200: Manuscript Development
(CWRT 200) will be immersed in a supportive com-
munity of writers, all with a common goal – finish their
book. Course readings, lively discussions, seminars with
local and visiting writers and one-on-one coaching ses-
sions with the instructor are all part of the course.
Dean is also instructing Creative Writing 100: Studies
in Writing (CWRT 100) for the fall semester. Students
can learn how to liven up characters, write better poetry
and share unique life experiences with others through the
written word. A Wednesday evening course (6 pm to 9
pm) at Nelson’s Tenth Street Campus, there is no experi-
ence necessary and it is open to all full-time students and
community learners. The CWRT 100 course is also avail-
able at the Castlegar Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays
(2:30 pm to 3:50 pm) and taught by veteran instructor
and author Almeda Glenn Miller.
Tuition for both courses includes registration for the
Stone’s Throw Writer’s Weekend at the Mir Centre for
Peace in Castlegar on Saturday, October 26. For more

Why do some of us accept risks
to help others? What compels us to
lend a helping hand? In August 2014
when the West African Ebola epi-
demic was spinning out of control,
our speaker, Dr. Bruce Reeder, wres-
tled with the decision of whether
or not to join the fight against the
disease. He reasoned with his wife,
Sheila: “If not me, who? If not now,
Dr. Bruce Reeder when? I had the skills and they were
needed. I went to Liberia with Méde-
cins Sans Frontières.”
At the age of 22, halfway through medical school, Dr.
Reeder volunteered for a summer at a clinic in the poor-
est part of town in Kingston, Jamaica, setting his trajectory
toward the field of global health and humanitarianism. To
date Dr. Reeder has 45 years of experience in Canada and
abroad, at times in volatile and unsafe situations. Among
his many accomplishments Dr. Reeder has front line expe-
rience working with Doctors Without Borders in Liberia,
on the Ebola front, in Kyrgyzstan on the control of drug-
resistant tuberculosis and HIV and AIDS, in the Demo-
cratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic on
the establishment of surveillance and response systems for
epidemic diseases.
Dr. Reeder will give a thought-provoking presentation
on the meaning of social responsibility, accountability
and humanitarianism. Proceeds will be split between the
Grandmothers Campaign, an initiative of the Stephen Lewis
Foundation supporting African grandmothers raising their

Stigma – Words matter
Getting “clean.” “Junkie.” “Addict.” “Dirty” needles.
The language we use to refer to people with substance use
disorders can elicit many negative stereotypes.
Research shows many people with substance use chal-
lenges have also experienced trauma and violence, making
them vulnerable and putting them at further risk of self-
stigma by internalizing the negative messages they hear all
around them.
Language can also have serious negative impacts on the
family and friends of those with a substance use disorder,
or those lost to overdose. Stigma is a major barrier prevent-
ing people from getting well. When we use stigmatizing lan-
guage, we prevent people from reaching out for help. This
applies to the person with a substance use disorder, but also
to their loved ones. The shame caused also drives people to
use alone, putting them at increased risk of harm.
Research about the impact of stigma has demonstrated
that although people who use drugs alone understand the
risks of a fatal overdose, the shame of coming forward and
seeking help is felt so strongly that they choose to hide their
drug use. Some people also feel stigma about carrying a
naloxone kit. The stigma continues if a person is receiv-
ing methadone or Suboxone with the sense that ‘you are
treating a drug with a drug’. In summary, some people feel
stigmatized for using drugs, stigmatized for trying
to reduce the risk of overdose, and stigmatized for
seeking treatment.
Substance use disorders are more highly stigma-
tized than any other health condition. This is largely
due to the misinformed notion that addiction is
some form of moral failing. In a report available on
TowardTheHeart.com, BC Centre for Disease Con-
trol researchers outline the stigmatizing language
often used to describe substance use.

The overdose crisis continues – in 2018, one life
was lost every two hours in Canada. It can happen to
anyone. It’s important that we reduce stigma around
people who use drugs and ensure that everyone has
access to the health-care services they need, where
and when they need them. For more information

Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres
within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their
Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope
This September marks the 39th anniversary of Terry Fox’s
Marathon of Hope. Hundreds of thousands of people will
remember this young Canadian’s audacious effort by uniting
from coast to coast to coast for the Annual Terry Fox Run on
Sunday, September 15.
The longevity of the run and the cancer research legacy
inspired by Terry’s run is a remarkable reflection of Canada’s
respect for a man who gave us an indelible example of what
it means to persevere. With over 10,000 fundraising events
taking place nationwide, it is clear that Canadians have every
intention to see Terry’s dream through to fulfillment.
“I know it can be a busy time of year but there is no bet-
ter feeling that to come together with family and friends,
in your own community, for a great Canadian fall tradition
that, quite simply, changes lives for the better,” says Terry Fox
Foundation executive director Britt Andersen.
Since Terry ran his Marathon of Hope in 1980, Canadians
have raised over $750 million for cancer research. This money
is invested into projects with the greatest potential impact
for patients. One such project is called Terry Fox PROFYLE,
which focuses on hard to treat cancers for youth. This project
and others like it, use the principles of precision medicine
and big data in a collaborative pan-Canadian approach in an
effort to give kids with hard to treat cancers another chance.

Kootenay artists
The Rossland Council for Arts and
Culture (RCAC) will be presenting a
juried visual art exhibition entitled Life
in the Kootenays. The juried exhibition
will be taking place at the Miners’ Hall
October 25 to 27, 2019.
Submissions to the Life in the Koo-
tenays exhibition should be an artist’s
representation of living and working in
the Kootenays. It is open to visual art-
ists of all ages currently residing in the
West Kootenay region.
Artists are encouraged to respond to
this theme with new and recent ideas
and works. All original visual art works

Historical Society needs your help!
s A fundraising campaign is underway to save a historic
Japanese Canadian fishing boat that is the last of its kind
in Canada.
The Merriwake, a 31´ gill netter built in 1929, was
acquired earlier this year by the Slocan Valley Historical
Society (SVHS) after it was alerted to the boat’s existence.
It was constructed by master boat builder Isamu Matsu-
moto, the father of aluminum boat building, whose family
was interned in Slocan during WWII.
The boat will never again float. However, under the
direction of a conservation plan and the skill of a local
shipwright, the Merriwake will be restored to the condi-
tion it was in when confiscated by the government in 1941.
A large timber-framed structure with a Japanese aesthetic
will shelter the vessel and allow her to be displayed for all
to view and enjoy at no cost. Interpretive signage will be
installed in the centre.
“We are very excited to launch our first online fundrais-
ing campaign,” says Joyce Johnson, president of the SVHS.
