Table 1.

Weight for Age

Figure shows the magnitude of 0-59-month-old children malnutrition prevalence rate for the past five
(5) years considering weight for age. In the span of five years, the malnutrition prevalence rate of the
municipality has decrease from a reported 6.1% - Underweight and 1.3% Severely Underweight in 2014 to
only 2.3% and 0.4% respectively in 2018. In the year 2016, it has a rapid decrease in prevalence rate reported
both underweight and severely underweight. This was the year when NGO – PhilDHRAA Mindanao through
FRESH project implemented their program in the municipality directed to identified families with underweight
and severely underweight children. There had been immense capacity development of Barangay Nutrition
Committees, increasing food sources to the families, feeding program and behavior change. Moreover, the
prevalence rate of 3.0% underweight in 2016 to 2017 and 0.4% severely underweight in 2017 to 2018 is the
same.

Table 2. Length/Height for Age

Figure shows the magnitude of 0-59-month-old children malnutrition prevalence rate for the past five
(5) years considering length/height for age. In the span of five years, the malnutrition prevalence rate of the
municipality has decrease from a reported 16.6% - Stunted and 6.8% Severely Stunted in 2014 to only 6.9%
and 2.3% respectively in 2018. However, between the year 2016 to 2017 there has a slight increase of 0.4%
Stunted cases. This result is the effect that other barangays appointed new Barangay Nutrition Scholars that
were trained and being supplied with new assessment tools in determining nutritional status of the child.

Table 3. Weight for Length/Height

Figure shows the magnitude of 0-59-month-old children malnutrition prevalence rate for the past five
(5) years considering weight for length/height. In the span of five years, the malnutrition prevalence rate of
the municipality has a fluctuating trend. The highest peak recorded was in the year 2017 for wasted and 2015
for severely wasted. Nevertheless, in five years span, the prevalence rate decreased form reported 3.7%
wasted and 1.3 severely wasted in 2014 to 2.6% wasted and 1.0% severely wasted in 2018. The result
reported that this was associated with an acute shortage of food or food utilization due to natural calamity
like flood that frequently occurs in the municipality that last for 3 months before it subsides. Same with the
reason on the slight increase of prevalence rate as to length/height for age is that other barangays with
appointed new Barangay Nutrition Scholars were already trained and being provided with new assessment
tools in determining nutritional status of the child.

Recommendation:
Nutrition Policies is not enough to decrease the prevalence rate of undernutrition. It must be
significantly associated with the reduction of undernutrition in the municipality or operationalized by
streamlining with development agenda and having a concrete nutrition action plan with corresponding funds
that is enough to sustain the program involving other sectors. Therefore, increasing investment in the capacity
development in nutrition program management from the barangay level up to the municipality is essential to
have a better and brighter future for nutrition program.
