No Arc, Voltage Problems Report:

NO ARC - This is a count of cycles where a peak voltage of at least 2 kV was seen, but the
1st spark pattern indicates that an arc did not occur. This would normally indicate a
col. fouled or worn spark plug. Single scan this plug, on the trace after peak voltage is
reached a slowly decaying sinusoid will be seen as opposed to the sudden sharp drop
of voltage indicating an arc has started.

Dead - This is a count of cycles where the peak voltage failed to reach 4.0 kV and the
2nd analyzer timed out. This means the secondary has no power, or has a short to ground.
col. The short to ground could be from arcing within the coil, or arcing from primary or
secondary wiring to the engine block. Also check spark sensor wire to be sure it is
correctly connected to plug wire, ground and the meter. Try measuring another spark
plug.

Max - This is a count of cycles where the peak voltage exceeded 46 kV. Since most ignition
3rd systems cannot generate this high of a voltage, this indicates a measurement problem.
col. Normally, the spark sensor clip is only capacitively coupled to the secondary wire.
However, if there is direct arcing or a high resistance current path to the clip,
this type of high voltage reading can occur. This means the secondary wiring
insulation has failed, or is failing and should be replaced, or wiring may be
contaminated with a conductive substance and should be cleaned or replaced. Also
verify that the spark sensor is working correctly. The spark plug may still be
providing an ignition source to the cylinder.

Flyback ignition curves are counted in the statistical results of this report. Curves
with a NO ARC flag, Dead flag or a Max voltage flag are not used in the statistics of
this report.

Flyback - After the initial voltage spike, a voltage spike of opposite polarity was seen
before the arc phase of the spark event. This may be normal for the ignition system,
but it could also indicate arcing is occurring within the ignition coil. Check and
see if other plugs on the engine have flyback spikes.

Flyback ignition curves are counted in the statistical results of this report.
Curves with a NO ARC flag, Dead flag or a Max voltage flag are not used in the
statistics of this report.

Arc Slope - For a negative pulling ignition system:

A positive slope indicates decreasing resistance during the arc event. This normally
indicates a resistance problem in the secondary wiring. Check wires and all connections.

A flat slope indicates a stable resistance during the arc event. This is a normal arc
event. No problems are indicated.

A negative slope indicates increasing resistance during the arc event. This normally
would indicate increasing resistance across the spark plug gap.

For a positive pulling system, the slope indications would be reversed. A normal event may
start flat and then change to a negative slope towards the end of the arc event due to thermal
expansion of the spark gap.
