Identify the number of significant figures and write the following in scientific notation:
(2 marks per question)
14. On average, the estimated number of cells in an adult human body is:
37, 200, 000, 000, 000
19. Assume that the surface area of a cell in the lungs that is exposed to air is
square-shaped. As a result of a prescription drug if the cell swells and its length
doubles, by what factor would its exposed surface area increase?
(Show your reasoning) (2 marks)
20. If the cell in the above question was cube-shaped, by what factor would its volume
increase when its length increases by a factor of two?
(Show your reasoning) (2 marks)
21. In an attempt to rip apart the safe-box where final exam papers are kept, four 101
students try to pull the box in 4 different directions (see fig. below). Find the total
force (resultant) being applied to the safe, and its angle clock-wise from the
positive side of x-axis. Please keep intermediate answers (total x and y
components) to 3 decimal places where possible (truncate the rest), and round the
final answer (magnitude and angle of the resultant) to two decimal places.
(10 marks)(0.5 marks deducted if the answers are not rounded.)
