1 INTRODUCTION

I want to start quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s opinion “must not omit to

mention that out of nearly seventy eight Assamese pleaders, fifteen has suspended
practice, probably the highest percentage throughout India”.

Lovely Assam is resourceful in nature , British has always have a greed for
Assam , after receiving Captain Wales account for Assam , the east India company
want set colony in Assam , they fulfill this desire after treaty of Yandabo in 1826.
In order to get profit as much as they can by exploiting the native simple people of
Assam. But when there is a injustice in the world , the humanity guard itself by
creating revolution to change the system. In this regard, I have the honour to
mention the Assam’s greatest social reformer and messenger of humanity
Sankardeva, who fought in the heard of people, whose made people understand the
evil of slavery, subordination and ignorance. When the condition of common
people becomes worst during British rule, there developed a thrust for freedom of
the country. Generation after generation of India was bonded in slavery of
foreigners, slowly the high values increased and building of world's largest
democracy and set ideal for many slave countries for freedom struggle. Now it is
unbelievable for the new generation think such non- violence movement can be
leaded under a person of flesh blood. The people visualize a peaceful country
through Mahatma Gandhi. Though violence played a vital role in the freedom
struggle, it is mainly based on non-violence. So , the freedom struggle can be
called the world’s greatest peaceful vision , the goal was achieved by supreme
sacrifice of freedom fighters and we see how our lovely Assam took revolutionary
part in it . It will be our honest effort to describe the national independence as well
as the national integration.

Type equation here.

EXPLOITATION GET A IMPENETRABLE FORT:

Sepoy Mutiny is considered as the first war of Independence , which took place in
1857 , starting from Meerut. As a result, the was power transferred to British
Crown from East India Company who ruled on behalf of British Crown. In Assam,
Maniram Dewan(Assamese nobleman) planned to stage a revolt simultaneously
with that revolt, British got his letters sending to his followers and he was hanged .
Before this incidence, In 1828, Gomdhar Konwar, a prince of Ahom royal family
rose in revolt against East India Company with Dhanjay Borgohain and his
followers. After the Sepoy Mutiny , the first organized peasants' movement
occurred in 18 October, 1861, known as the glorious Phulaguri Dhawa. It shocked
British administration for the first time , to control it , they killed 39 peasants and
lost lieutenant Singer.

When British started, people of Assam support British administration. But soon the
real image of invader British revealed. They started to loot India as well as Assam.
The officials of Ahom kingdom lost their jobs and prestige. The Bengali Hindus
was hired in different places of administration and replaced the Mother tongue
Assamese by Bengali.

The tax system had broken bonds of common people. The rigorous taxation policy
was introduced by the British. Grazing tax , tax on cutting grass and trees in
jungles was oppressive in nature . From bamboo, opium, woods of jungles and
water , there was nothing left in taxation list of British. Tea, others resource (oil
from Digboi refinery, precious gold and Shankardev drawing) was looted from
Assam and sent to Britain (that’s why it is said London is built by stolen money
from India). When somebody found spoke against it or involve anti-British
activities, he is sent jail or brutally exploited or many times hanged for no proved
reason .
The basic characteristic of British was to remain British, they have no sympathy for
the people of India or Assam(someone showing pity for the people very rare case. In
order to rule for long time , they changed our education system, they reformed the
education system to product employees for recruitment of small posts in
administration. But the people understand every tricks of British, they involved in
anti-British movement directly or indirectly. The students of subordinate India , get
connected to the world that they have seen in contrast to British effort. Lakshminath
Bezbaruah, Padmanath Gohainbaruah and many Assamese writer fought in the
battlefield of people’s mind . The French revolution, American revolution showed
the path of freedom in the mind of people. Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru
,Subhash Chandra Bose , Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Bhagat Singh, Rani
Lakshmibai Chandrashekhar Azad, Dr. Maghfoor Ahmad Ajazi, Bal Gangadhar
Tilak inspired the people to fight real battle. Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Fakaruddin Ali
Ahmed, Kanaklata Barua, Maniram Dewan, Kushal Konwar, Bishnu Prasad Rabha,
Hem Barua are main encouragement for people to free our land from foreign ruler.
The farmer , the proletariat, the unexperienced new youth energy from villages , the
students of schools and colleges; almost every section of society participate in the
freedom struggle ( Some organization was in favour of British Emperor). We can
say proletariat got justice as they had such leaders that never be reborn . In Assam ,
Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and Bishnu Rabha wrote revolutionary music which will live
forever to inspire people.
Assam is a state where a patriot lived who cut the throat of maternal uncle saying
“My maternal uncle can not be greater than my country” because he did not work
dedicatedly. Joymoti's patriotic love for country will never be forgotten. This
historical incident helped to create brave girl like Kanaklata.
The Non-cooperation lasted from 1920 to February 1922 and was led by Mahatma
Gandhi after Jallianwala Bagh Massacre and Rowlatt Law . It was aimed to resist
British rule through “Ahimsa” which means non-violence. Gandhi appealed to
Protesters to refuse to buy British goods, adopt the use of local handicrafts and
picket liquor shops. Nabin Chandra Bordoloi played vital role in Assam during
Non-cooperation movement, who becomes gradually radial nationalist after
Jallianwala Bagh. The non-cooperation movement was launched on 1 August 1920
and withdrawn in February 1922 after the Chauri Chaura incident. The year 1921
is very important in the political history of Assam. The middle class who was
basically silent and this movement was a labour movement.
The year 1930 is the beginning of the second phase of the freedom struggle. That is
the period of civil disobedience movement. Gandhi broke the salt law on 12 th
March 1930 with 79 people.Students participation in this journey was remarkable.
Gandhi was arrested on 5th May and whole Assam revolt against the British.
Especially the students and youth made a jihad. Their protest participation was
remarkable. Liladhar Baruah participate in Dandi March . (Kanninghum circular
was to stop political participation of students.)Tarun Ram Phukan led civil
disobedience movement in Assam .
In 15th August , 1942 , the quit India movement started . The motto “Do or Die”
echoed and re-echoed in Assam . Parallel government or village was established in
Kamrup, Nowgong, Darrang, Lakhimpur districts. The police started firing on
unarmed persons . Just because of hoist flag or to participate in procession, near
twenty-seven lost precious lives and as many as thirty seven people received
injuries from gun shot wounds besides, quite a large number of persons were
wounded by lathi charges which were made intensively in the localities of North-
Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Dikhowghat, Tezpur, Behali, Barpeta, Sibsagar,
Nitaipukhurihat, Teok, Nowgong, Golaghat, Goalpara, Nowgong, Chatial,
Sarbhog, Dhupdhara, Kharikatia, Roha, Chhaygaon, Panigaon, etc. Some persons
were maimed and crippled for life as a result of injuries received from guns and
lathi-charges. Sometimes even innocent persons became victims of target brutal
exploitation. Tilak Deka Barapujia was shot because blow the horn to aware the
Villagers. Kushal Konwar was hanged accusing fault case in train derailment case
in Sorupather . Kamala Miri , tribal young died as a result of hunger strike on April
23, 1943. Kanaklata and Mukunda Kakati was fired and died on the spot when
there are going to hoist flag in Gohpur police station.Bhogeswari Phukononi was
killed as a result of police firing in Berhampur police.
CONCLUSION:
The Assam’s freedom fighters will never be forgotten and unless we fulfill their
dreams , they will be not be respected . It is our duty to tribute them by doing small
things with great dedication. If cities are the centers of modernization and
industrialization, then the village is the soul of India , so the cities and villages
equally developed.
