INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Social media is rapidly changing the communication setting of today's social world. The
emergence of social media is significantly influencing the academic life of students. Institutions
and academician are continually trying with Social media technologies hoping to excite critical
thinking skills, collaboration and knowledge construction. Today social media has been accepted
by higher institution making it a platform where students connect with their instructors, fellow
students and of higher authorities across the board. This is therefore called for a study to
explore and examine how social media has impacted on student's academic life Boateng et al.,
2016).

Social Media is defined by Merriam Webster dictionary as "forms of electronic

communications through which users create online communities to share information, ideas,
personal messages, and other content." Social media are Web 2.0 technologies that facilitate
social interaction and collaboration, and promote and nurture a sense of belonging and
community (Bigham & Conner, 2010) it permits the users to be an active creators and shares
online information rather than simply absorbers.

In our present generation, a shift is occurring in education and learning environment is

becoming decentralized. The students direct their own learning, find their own information and
create knowledge through engaging in normal doings for learning (Kop and Hill, 2011).

While technology is new teachers have new ways of connecting with students about
everything through social media (Gurcan, 2015 ). Educators and scholars agreed that twitter has
a positive impact on engagement and has potential as a powerful learning tool (Noor, 2012).
Researchers have found that students are both attracted to online classes because of the lack of
restriction in time or place (Lee and Choi, 2010). However research shows that students rate
their online courses as less positive experiences that do students in traditional courses (Robe-
Hemp, et al., 2009). The distance between the students and teachers makes online learning
difficult for many students (Borup, West, and Graham). Online learning requires a high degree
of self motivation, self discipline and self direction (Moore,1997).

Online learning presents unique issues for students such as poor participation,
procrastination, and feeling of isolation are among the cited issues that students face in online
classes (Rabe-hemf, Wollen and Humin 2009). One of the biggest problem of online courses is
that the interaction between students and teachers makes engagement difficult (Rabe-Hemf, et
al.,2009). According to Vigor sky's (1978) the cognitive understanding and the personal
construction of human knowledge depend on relations with others. The more students are
engaged in the learning experience , the more they learn. Students who learn at a distance are
less satisfied in their overall experience than those who attend face-to-face classes due to lack
of social component (Pigliapoco and Bogloliolo, 2007). In other word, in some cases the online
learning is much better than the traditional norms , which is the face-to- face class. The social
media has so much effectiveness in every people. And this can be good or bad either. However,
social media is much significant. The importance of this paper is to promote and make proofs
about the effectiveness of using social media in every students as a tool of learning.

Social media offer four strategic challenges of European Education and Training and can
thus contribute to modernising Education such as enhancing innovation and creativity;
improving the quality and efficiency of provision and outcomes; making lifelong learning and
learner mobility a reality and; promoting equity and active citizenship. This strategies may could
apply in the Philippines for more development and nurture abilities and skills in a lifelong
learning continuum.According to the study from JRC-Institute for Prospective Technological
Studies (IPTS) 2010,
Statement of the problem

The study seeks to find out the effectiveness of social media as a beneficial tools of
learning. Specifically, the study aims the following objectives.

1. To used the social media as one of the source of knowledge.

2. To help every learners become more active and improve their study.
3. To educate every students in their outside world and make it easy for them to find real
information and facts.

Hypothesis of the study

There's no significant relationship between social media and academic learning.

Scope and delimitation

The research focuses on social media become a modern and effects of the academic
status of educators and learners. It indicates the proof of how the effectiveness of social media
and on how does affect the social media users toward its greatness in functioning for the better.
We simply concentrate on the idea of what social media can bring for the excellent and
wellness. We will not e able to conduct the research regarding the percentage of hours people
spent towards using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google app and etc.
Gathering the hour spent by the social media users can affect the real focus of the research. We
will no longer hold the disadvantage of social media such as the addiction occurs by those
educators and learners. Who enable to spent their precious time with those few entertainment
and amusement that doesn't give sense. After all, they just waste their time. We shall maintain
the concentration with how does social media function when in terms of the academic wellness
and how brings the excellence towards the educators and learners. It is already exist from what
the focus of the research.

Definition of terms

Social Media - forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and
microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas,
personal messages, and other content (as videos). (Merriam Webster Dictionary)

Technology - the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve
problems. A machine, piece of equipment, method, etc., that is created by technology.

Chapter II
Review of Related Literature

Social Media. Social media is a form of electronic communication which users create
online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and opinions on that
content. Social media is create not only for absorbing an information but also in sharing your
own aspects in online informations.

Education. Education is a field of study that deals with some problems and methods in
teaching and is a action or process to acquire knowledge, skills, and understanding especially in
universities. According to Finnemann 2005; Taekke 2006, teachers must need to interact to its
students, also students must need to interact with their teachers as well as to their classmates
because in this case, the communication between student and teacher as well as the
communication between student and student will more through the presence of social media.
When social media involves in learning, the possibility of interaction with people will be easier
and much better. Most of all there's no shyness that occurs. Using social media will enhance
students learning experiences.

Social Media in implementing Education. it means that social media is a kind of education
which you are able to collect some data's and knowledge on same aspects with different
locations. Although some educators embrace social media on a personal level, concern still exist
when using it for classroom instructions. In our generation learning environment in becoming
decentralized moving to use their vocabularies by their own learning, own information and own
knowledge by engaging in networks away form the formal setting. So I'll media can increase the
vocabularies who possessed by this it can be more self-confident while exist because you know
that you have the potential the potential for transforming Nour learning. In social media you
know the essence of learning because you are free to browse more easily rather than a books.
In social media you will know how to gathered information rightfully because you have a
strategies to remove some wrong information behind that. In contemporary world social media
is prominent become of its unique instructure that can easily notice by generation Z.

According to Hicks and Graber (2010) Web.2.0 tools offer a new form of learning and
teaching. In this generation learning and teaching is too late to adopt on some prominent issue
because we are too late to adopt on some prominent issues because we are continuously and
rapidly collecting some modern issues behind our community. So social media is the powerful
tool in learning and teaching to establish a good understanding to all of us. In which we have
been comfortable to adopt it easily for instances of phenomenas.Online learning requires a high
degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and self-directed (Moore,1997). In online teaching
where not only collecting information but we are providing and progressing the self-esteem of
all users that can affect towards the others. Netiquette exist when their was a social medias that
can manage your moral behaviors and how to lessen some bad behaviours. Through that we
can easily adopt the morality of all.

While the findings supported innovative teaching strategies that created communities
and maximize learning within the community context. (Perry.et.al.,2009)The social media has
really affect not just on tool of learning but on the strategies to have created moral communities
that we can influence other by our netiquette that we learned behind the context of social
media. That innovative teaching can maximize the potential of moral behaviour. This is the
foundation to improve good relationship to the other even to community context. We focus on
the importance of social media in the field of education from the perspective that individual
expand their knowledge to a varying extent. In social media we can expand our thinking or our
knowledge to any different aspects. We can access knowledge by the corners of the world.
Without any limitation or boundaries begin us. In this field of education we can easily collect
more knowledge and basis even collecting facts about our phenomena. This can be a big help to
our perspective behind the context of this. That our keystone to evaluate and create own
understanding.
The newly conceived educational process requires changing the role of the teacher to the
learner (Carolyn & Foster, 2010; Fazal, DeSimone, & Lieman, 2010). The implementation of
knowledge would not only be on Teachers to learners just like in school. Through the use of
social media learners can also furnish knowledge into learners like them. This is the way of
changing role in social media in applying the academic purposes.Adopting the new way of using
social media wil provides revision of roles of the educator and learners.

CHAPTER Ill
METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the methods and procedures employed in the study. Specifically,
the research design, sampling plan, cite selection , data gathering plan, instruments for data
gathering and their descriptive and data analysis plan.

Research Design
The study examined the effectiveness of social media for students of Pangasinan State
University Lingayen Campus as a tool for learning with the academic year of 2018-2019.This
study makes use of a quantitative research strategy in the sense that there will be numeric data.
A quantitative research strategy which correlational design is particularly applicable for the
purposes of this research. It explores the relationship between variables using statistical
analysis. It is mostly observational in terms of data collection.

Population and Sample of the Study

The researchers used the convenience sampling to gather the data needed in the research
study. A convenience sampling is a sample where the respondents are selected the accessibility
of the researchers. The researchers makes no attempt, or only a limited attempt, to ensure that
this sample is an accurate representation of some larger group or population (Business
Dictionary, 2015)
The respondents were the senior high school students of Pangasinan State University
Lingayen Campus. According to the Registrar's Office, there is a total of more or less 600
students enrolled in PSU Lingayen Campus, on the 1st semester of academic year 2018-2019. A
total number of 50 students were selected as respondents of the study.

Data Gathering Instrument

This study used the descriptive survey method with the questionnaire as the main
instrument in gathering the needed data that determined the effectiveness of social media as a
tool of learning of senior sigh school students of PSU and other important data pertinent to this
study. A questionnaire is a list of action normally doing of millenials regarding social media with
the four boxes which agree box, disagree box, strongly agree and strongly disagree.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers asked for the permission from the Campus Executive Director to conduct
research and distribute the questionnaire. Upon the approval of the request, the researchers
distribute the questionnaire among the respondents which were immediately retrieved.
Afterwards, the data were gathered, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted.
