A Biography of

Yohanes Surya

Yohanes Surya was born in Jakarta on November 6, 1963. He began to deepen physics
at the Physics Department of Mathematics, University of Indonesia until 1986, taught at the
SMAK I Sower Jakarta until 1988 and subsequently taking a master and doctorate programs in
the College of William and Mary, Virginia, United States. Master's program in 1990 and
completed his doctoral program in 1994 with cum laude. After earning his Ph.D., Yohanes
Surya became Consultant of Theoretical Physics at TJNAF / CEBAF (Continuous Electron
Beam Accelerator Facility), Virginia - United States (1994). Although it already had a Greencard
(permission to live and work in the United States), Yohanes Surya returned to Indonesia in
order to it the name of Indonesia through physics Olympiad (motto was "Go Get Gold") and to
develop physics in Indonesia.
Returning from America, in addition to train and lead the Indonesian Physics Olympiad
Team (TOFI), Yohanes Surya, become a lecturer and researcher at the UI graduate program to
the field of nuclear physics (1995, 1998). From 1993 to 2007 the students held families together
successfully won it the name of the nation with 54 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 42 bronze
medals in various competitions Science / Physics International. In 2006, a student held families
together won predicate Absolute Winner (World Champion) in the International Physics
Olympiad (IPhO) XXXVII in Singapore.
Since 2000, Yohanes Surya lot of training for teachers of Physics and Mathematics in
almost all major cities in Indonesia, the capital of regency / municipality, to villages throughout
the archipelago from Sabang to Merauke, including Islamic boarding schools. To accommodate
this training Yohanes Surya Surya founded the Institute. Surya Institute is currently building
TOFI center that will be centers for teacher training and students who will compete in various
championships science / physics.
Yohanes Surya is a prolific writer for the field of Physics / Mathematics. There are 68
books have been written for students from elementary through high school. Besides writing
books, he also wrote hundreds of articles in the scientific journal Physics both nationally and
internationally, KOMPAS Daily, Tempo, Media Indonesia and others. He is also the originator of
the term MESTAKUNG and three Mestakung law, as well as a top originator of learning (Easy,
Fun, Fun).
Aside from being a writer, Yohanes Surya also as a resource of Physics teaching
programs via CD ROM for elementary, junior high and high school. He also produces a variety
of educational TV programs including "Journey to the World Fantasy" and "Tralala-trilili" in
RCTI.

Outside activities above, Yohanes Surya to act in various international organizations as
a Board member of the International Physics Olympiad, vice president of The First Step to
Nobel Prize (1997-present); initiator and President of Asian Physics Olympiad (2000-present);
Chairman of the first Asian Physics Olympiad, in Karawaci, Tangerang (2000); Executive
member of the World Physics Competition Federation, Chairman of The International
Econophysics Conference 2002; Chairman of the World Federation Congress, Physics 2002;
Board of Experts in National Geographic magazine in Indonesia and become Chairman of the
Asian Science Camp 2008 in Denpasar, Bali. During a career in the development of physics,
Yohanes Surya has received numerous awards / fellowships, among others, CEBAF / SURA
U.S. award for '92-93 (one of the best students in the field of nuclear physics in the
southeastern United States), creativity award 2005 from the Creativity Development
Foundation, a gift Badge Wira Karya Satya (2006) of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. In
the same year, he was elected as the representative of Indonesia in the field of education to
meet with U.S. President George W. Bush. In 2007, he wrote the book "Mestakung: Success
Secrets of World Champion" which was awarded as the author of Best Seller fastest in
Indonesia. And in 2008 received an award as a Hero of the Present Modernisator choice and
TEMPO magazine. Yohanes Surya also received many awards from Menpora, Radio Elshinta,
Daily Independent, Metro TV Award, Award "Young kids Icon" from Trax FM Radio,
Newspapers Jakarta Award and the Award Republika newspaper as "People of the change in

Yohanes Surya is a professor of physics from Satya Wacana Christian University,
Salatiga. He has been Dean of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics University of Pelita
Harapan, Head of Promotion and Cooperation of the Indonesian Physical Society (2001-2004),
the jury various competitions science / math (XL-com, L'oreal, etc. CIU), a member of the Board
of Curators Museum of Science and Technology Parks Mini Indonesia Indah, one of the
founder of The Mochtar Riady Institute, a member of the Board of Trustees of Islamic High
School and is now Professor Assalamiyah Banten. Yohanes Surya served as Rector of the
University Multimedia Nusantara (Kompas Gramedia Group) as well as actively campaigning
for Love Physics (Physics Love Bali, West Kalimantan Love Physics etc.) throughout Indonesia.
Since the year 2009 Prof.. Yohanes Surya in cooperation with local governments
lagging regions to develop mathematical tops (Easy Fun and enjoyable), where local children
can learn mathematics behind it easily. Students who are considered "stupid" was able to
master math 1-6 grade elementary school in just 6 months. The program is now being
implemented in many developed areas, especially in Papua.
