BUILDINGS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

A. KEIRA
There is no contest! The Taj Mahal in India, definitely! I visited it while traveling recently, not because I
knew anything about it, just because it's considered one of the seven wonders of the world, you know. But it
was completely breathtaking. The great white domes of the mausoleum, standing out against the sky, and
mirrored in the refectng pool. I've never seen anything like it. It's decorated very simply, with geometric
shapes, following what the Islamic religion believes is appropriate for places of burial.
It's an amazingly romantc building. It was built by the grief-stcken emperor, Shah Jahan, after the
death of his third wife, as an expression of his sorrow. I would love to get married there one day; I can't think
of a better place for a wedding, although I suspect it would be very very costly. Oh well, it doesn't hurt to
dream.

B. DYLAN
My favourite building, this year at least, is the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle. It was
designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry and his client was Paul Allen of Microsoft fame. Gehry was the
first person to use a computer modelling system called CATIA - which was used in the aerospace industry. As
he said, "we did a building by computer for a computer guy."
The building is formed from 400 tons of steel. It is covered by 21,000 aluminium and stainless steel
shingles. At the heart of the structure is the Sky Church - a high-tech cinema with a 70 ft high ceiling and the
world's largest LED screen. It is an amazing place.
I think this is truly a design where art and architect merge. It is challenging, the colours are amazing
and the wow factor is high! I'll admit I had mixed views about the exhibits that were inside the building - but
that doesn't take away from the building itself!

C. GEORGIA
My favourite building? Anything designed by the Austrian architect, Hundertwasser! I can’t choose just
one. He was a real character and his buildings are all so creatve and progressive; they stand out wherever
they are located and make an impression on everyone.

Page 5
To give you an idea about what he believed in, he proposed something called the “Window Right”. He
said a person in a rented apartment must be able to lean out of his window and scrape off the masonry
within arm’s reach. And he must be allowed to take a long brush and paint everything outside within arm’s
reach, so that it will be visible from afar to everyone in the street that someone lives there who is different
from the imprisoned, enslaved, standardized man who lives next door.
Hundertwasser condemned the sterile grid system of conventonal architecture. He rejected ratonalism,
the straight line and functonal architecture, and demanded instead creatve freedom of building, and the
right to create individual structures. His designs included forested roofs, the spiral house, the ere-slit house,
the high-rise meadow house and even an inaudible Green Motorway.

D. AARON
First of all, I have many favourite outdoor places here in the UK; Golitha Falls on Bodmin Moor- a very
special one; in fact, most of Bodmin Moor is very special. I love being outdoors in a natural environment at
any tme of day or night.
A favourite building? That's more difficult, there is a tny chapel on top of St Ives Island that used to be
used by fishermen. I have spent many nights walking round St Ives Island and always wanted t look inside
this building that was kept closed to the public.
One day I was lucky to find a cleaner working there, giving the place a clean, so I couldn’t resist. I asked
him nicely if I could have a look inside, he didn’t seem to mind. There was nothing in there but a huge Bible
and a window looking out to sea. It had a rather mysterious, rather sad atmosphere. I have been back there
many tmes but, as usual, the place is always locked up. I’m so pleased I managed to go inside and look
around at least once.

51-56. Read an extract from a novel in which a young man called Caitlin talks about her life on an
island. Choose the best answer to each question. (12 ms)
We live on the island of Hale. It’s about four kilometres long and two kilometres wide at its broadest
point, and it’s joined to the mainland by a causeway called the Stand - a narrow road built across the mouth
of the river which separates us from the rest of the country. Most of the tme you wouldn’t know we’re on
an island because the river mouth between us and the mainland is just a vast stretch of tall grasses and
brown mud. But when there’s a high tde and the water rises a half a metre or so above the road and
nothing can pass untl the tde goes out again a few hours later, then you know it’s an island.
We were on our way back from the mainland. My older brother, Dominic, had just finished his first
year at university in a town 150 km away. Dominic’s train was due in at five and he’d asked for a lift back
from the staton. Now, Dad normally hates being disturbed when he’s writng (which is just about all the
tme), and he also hates having to go anywhere, but despite the typical sighs and moans - why can’t he get a
taxi? what’s wrong with the bus? - I could tell by the sparkle in his eyes that he was really looking forward to
seeing Dominic.
So, anyway, Dad and I had driven to the mainland and picked up Dominic from the staton. He had
been talking non-stop from the moment he’d slung his rucksack in the boot and got in the car. University
this, university that, writers, books, partes, people, money, gigs…. And when I say talking, I don’t mean
talking as in having a conversaton, I mean talking as in jabbering like a mad thing. I didn’t like it …. the way
he spoke and waved his hands around as if he was some kind of intellectual or something. It was

Page 6
embarrassing. It made me feel uncomfortable - that kind of discomfort you feel when someone you like,
someone close to you, suddenly starts actng like a complete idiot. And I didn’t like the way he was ignoring
me, either. For all the attenton I was getting I might as well not have been there. I felt a stranger in my own
car.
As we approached the island on that Friday afternoon, the tde was low and the Stand welcomed us
home, stretched out before us, clear and dry, beautfully hazy in the heat - a raised strip of grey concrete
bound by white railings and a low footpath on either side, with rough cobbled banks leading down to the
water. Beyond the railings, the water was glintng with that wonderful silver light we sometmes get here in
the late afternoon which lazes through to the early evening.
We were about halfway across when I saw the boy. My first thought was how odd it was to see
someone walking on the Stand. You don’t often see people walking around here. Between Hale and
Moulton (the nearest town about thirty kilometres away on the mainland), there’s nothing but small
cottages, farmland, heathland and a couple of hills. So islanders don’t walk because of that. If they’re going
to Moulton they tend to take the bus. So the only pedestrians you’re likely to see around here are walkers or
bird-watchers. But even from a distance I could tell that the figure ahead didn’t fit into either of these
categories. I wasn’t sure how I knew, I just did.
As we drew closer, he became clearer. He was actually a young man rather than a boy. Although he
was on the small side, he wasn’t as slight as I’d first thought. He wasn’t exactly muscular, but he wasn’t
weedy-looking either. It’s hard to explain. There was a sense of strength about him, a graceful strength that
showed in his balance, the way he held himself, the way he walked….

57-62. Read a magazine article about debt. Six sentences have been removed from the article.
Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap. There is one extra sentence which you
do not need to use. (18 ms)
A. That line is called bankruptcy.
B. It is the poorest people who are unable to afford to start paying for schools when fees are
introduced, so their children miss out.
C. Some people claim debt cancellaton would just allow corrupt leaders to have more money for
themselves, rather than benefitng the poorest people.
D. They lent money to help Mexico, and other struggling countries, repay their own loans.
E. It is clear that more needs to be done to deal with the growing debt crisis.
F. Problems arise when the amount of debt accumulated is unpayable.
G. Structural Adjustment programmes, however, actually led to a decline in living standards and
deepened poverty.
DEBT AND POVERTY
Debt means owing money. Many of us have owed money, when we have borrowed it from our friends,
parents, or from a bank. Many people borrow large amounts of money as a mortage, to buy a house. Debt
is not necessarily a bad thing – borrowing money enables us to do things that we would not otherwise be
able to afford at the tme.
When people borrow money they arrange a programme for repaying the money over a partcular
amount of tme, plus interest that is added as a charge for borrowing the money. (57) _______ . People
may have taken on too much of a commitment, and be unable to afford the repayments that are due, or

Page 8
situatons may change such as the rate of interest rising, or their income falling. When individuals become
deeply indebted, we draw a line under the debt. (58) _____ Their debts are written off by law and they are
allowed to start again, although it will be hard for them to borrow money again in the future.
Like individuals, countries may also take out loans to use for various purposes, such as large-scale
projects or improvements to their infrastructure. However, when countries borrow money which they are
then unable to repay there is no such thing as bankruptcy. Countries remain deeply indebted, devertng
all of their resources to debt repayments to satsfy their lenders. A country will contnue to become more
and more damaged by unpayable debts. Public services suffer from a lack of investment and the protest
people go without their basic needs.
On average, debt payments cost many poor countries almost twice what they spend on educaton and
more than three tmes the amount spent on the populaton’s healthcare. Poor people suffer because of a
lack of government investment in their country, such as better roads which would help them travel to
market. (59) _______ And when the prices of basic foods go up, it is the poorest people again who can no
longer afford to feed their families.
In 1982, when Mexico became the first country to admit it could not repay its debts, the Internatonal
Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank stepped in to help. (60) ______ In return they imposed a
system known as “structural adjustment” on these countries. The aim was literally to alter the structure
of how money in each country was spent. These programmes consisted of strict measures designed to
help a country repay its debts by earning more hard currency through increasing its exports and reducing
its imports.
(61)______ Governments were forced to spend their money on debt repayments, rather than public
services for the populaton. Farmers had to grow cash crops for export, rather than food to feed their
families. The exported cash crops being sold were cheap, but imported processed goods were costly. The
prices of goods went up, and people struggled to survive.
In 1996 the World Bank and the IMF launched a new internatonal debt relief scheme known as the
Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initatve (HIPC). The initatve called for the reducton of external debt
through write-offs by official donors. As of January 2012, 39 countries were receiving debt relief under
HIPC.
The HIPC, unfortunately, has not solved the problem. There are stll many countries which are not
receiving help, because they do not fulfill the HIPC criteria. (62) ______
