As the Mechanical Technologist: Supervisor Of Machinery (Competent Person) GMR 2.

1 you will reports to the Plant Manager, where are


expected to effectively and efficiently undertake the below responsibilities and be accountable without any exceptions.

1. Identify possible legal non-compliances and ensure that corrective action is taken timeously.
2. Ensure statutory inspections are managed effectively on plants as per OHS Act & Regulations
3. Responsible and accountable for executing the statutory and legal requirements for plant machinery and facilities as stipulated OHS Act
& Regulations, including duties of GMR2.1- Supervisor of Machinery
4. Lead, coach and mentor plant GMR2.7 appointees.
5. Prepare for audits and investigations from relevant authorities e.g. Department of Labour audits/plant visits. Manage communication
with authorities (DoL, NPA, SAPS).
6. Identify and involve subject matter experts in technical legal matters
7. Support and partake in all SHERQ initiatives.
8. Assist Safety Officer and Environmental Officer on matters which requires technical & operational inputs from GM2.1
9. Lead investigations of serious incidents.
10. Advise plant colleagues regarding legal duties and responsibilities.
11. Prepare and execute training aiming to promote machinery safety operations to employees
12. Evaluate the accuracy of legal equipment registers and ensure they are up to date
13. Monitor Government Gazette publications to identify amendments of legislation and regulations and ensure that amendments to Acts
and Regulations are implemented and complied to.
14. Responsible for forecasting needs for parts materials and equipment required for outages and special projects.
15. Responsible for mechanical and maintenance issues of the whole biogas plant, with specific emphasis on pumps (centrifugal and
positive displacement pumps), mixers/agitators and fans
16. Take lead in supervisory requirements such as scheduling of personnel to cover required work, documentation of work practices by
individuals to ensure compliance to plant procedures, monitoring of attendance, adherence to safety rules and regulations.
17. Ensure all plant components are in good condition – pumps, mixers, agitators, cooling system and water reticulation, fans, chillers,
compressors, macerator, hammermill, fans and any other systems that are vital to plant operations;
18. Ensure all maintenance philosophies applicable to the plant are effectively implemented are executed, this shall including preventative
maintenance, condition monitoring, reactive maintenance, planned shut-down maintenance, etc.
19. Proactively identify and implement improvements to operational machinery and resource efficiencies whilst giving consideration to the
impact on other departments;
20. Lead in the creation and modification process for plant procedures relating to mechanical work of any kind.
21. Proactively participate on internal and external projects to provide technical inputs and safety compliance inputs
22. Plan, prepare and present training for mechanical group and cross training for other plant personnel to increase capabilities and
performance while enhancing safety levels.
23. Fault analysis on all plant equipment, including root cause analysis to establish cause of equipment failure;
24. Implement routine PM checks including vibration, oil monitoring and temperature inspections on designated rotating equipment and
ensuring logging or recording of all readings, includes preliminary assessment and reporting on as found conditions;
25. Ensures operation of machinery, mechanical & electrical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on electrical
& mechanical equipment; following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering
specifications; troubleshooting malfunctions
26. Conduct failure analyses, document results, and recommend corrective actions
27. Maintain equipment, parts and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed equipment,
parts, and supplies, placing and expediting orders and verifying receipt;
28. Prepare monthly reports with statistics such as top ten failures based on costs, job cards closed vs open, inventory usage, consumables
consumption, downtime and man hours then further use the reliability statistics to evaluate areas of improvement;
29. Ensure that safe work practices as per OHS Act are understood, implemented and consistently applied to work throughout the plant
while complying with policies, procedures, rules and regulations;
30. Manage the plant operators, front end loader drivers and plant assistants, in collaboration with the other site management team
members on the preventive and predictive maintenance checks and servicing of equipment by implementing maintenance schedules.
31. Support Plant Manager on daily operational activities and on strategic development activities which aims to achieve high level of plant
safety compliance, smooth high productive plant operations and business growth initiatives
32. Proactively participate on business initiatives which aims to grow Bio2Watt and Bronkhorstspruit Biogas Plant, this shall include
conducting formal presentations in seminars, conferences and to any interested authorities which may include local/government
departments and international stakeholders.
