Section 1:
1. To the south, what did the union occupation of Fort Sumter symbolize?
The confederates wanted to take control of Fort Sumter because it
symbolized something really important, which was union power.
2. What was the affect in the north of the south taking Fort Sumter?
The northerners most importantly united as one. Also, the north felt
that because the southerners entered the union peacefully, they therefore
could withdraw peacefully too. People who were abolishers were pleased by
secession because they didn’t want slave states in the union.
3. What advantages did the north have over the south?
Advantages the north had over the south was that their population was
greater, they had a greater advantage in manufacturing food production, and
civilian leadership proved to be very strong and very effective.
4. What advantages did the south have over the north?
Advantages that the south had over the north was that first of all, the
south had to defend its own land, which made the north have to attack,
capture, and occupy territory that was far away from their home bases. Also,
the Confederates had better leadership than the north when it came to being
in the field. Third, the south had King Cotton, in which was very much relied
upon by the British textile industry.
5. What happened at the First Battle of Bull Run?
The civilians dressed up and observed the battle, and the outcome was
the failure of the south to capture the northern capital.
Section 2:

1. How did the First Battle of Bull Run change ordinary people’s thinking of
war?
The First Battle of Bull Run shocked people because they began to
realize what was going on around them, and they really needed time to
configure.
2. How did the technological changes in guns make the Civil war more
impersonal than previous wars?
Troops began to use breech-loading rifles which made it harder and
harder for the opponents to recognize the soldiers armed with these
firearms.
3. How did George McClellan earn the nickname Tardy George?
McClellan got the nickname of Tardy George because he refused to
move his troops until he organized his army and drilled his troops for months
on.
4. In what ways did Lee differ from McClellan?
Lee was more bold and imaginative. He was greatly loved by his
fellow officers and soldiers.He freed the slaves.
5. Why did Lincoln permamently fire McClellan?
Lincoln fired McClellan because he let a truly decisive victory slip
through his fingers.

Section 3:
1. What factors affected Britain’s decision not to do recognize the
Confederacy?
Britain seized 2 Confederate diplomats who were travelling to
Europe. The Confederates violated the neutral rights and they were
building warships in Britain.
2. How did the Radical Republicans’ view about the main reason for the
war differ from Lincoln’s original view?
Lincoln believed that the purpose of the war was to save the Union
and nothing else. The Radicals insisted that Lincoln freed the slaves.
3. What caused Lincoln to change his mind about the reason for the war?
The bloody fighting made many Northerners want to hurt the South
as much as possible. Also slavery helped the Southern war effort and was
a crucial issue on the Union diplomatic front with Britain.

4. Why were the slaves not freed immediately after the Emancipation
Proclamation was issued?
It did not apply to the slave states that remained loyal to the Union
nor to the Confederate territories occupied by Union forces.

Section 4:
1. As the war progressed what hardships did the civilians face in the south?
Civilians faced food shortage because the Confederate government
taxed the farm products and printed paper money to finance the war.
2. What effect did the war have upon the North economy?
Immigration increased because wartime industries created a large
demand for workers and prospered from industries.
3. How did women support the war?
The women were left to run farms, plantations, and factories
on their own.
4. What were the conditions like in prison camp in both North and South?
The prison camp was ghastly stick. The prisoners ate scraps and were
surrounded by filth vermin, disease and death.

Section 5:
1. Why was the Battle of Gettysburg so important?
The Union defeated the Confederates at Gettysburg ending
the Civil War.
2. In the Gettysburg Address, to what cause did Lincoln say the living
should be dedicated?
The living should be dedicated to the great task of the honored dead
with devotion. These men have not died in vain and the rebirth of our nation
formed to be a government of the people, by the people and for the people
under God.
3. How did Sherman’s march to the sea mark a turning point in the history
of modern warfare?
His march illustrated a shift in the belief that only military target
should be destroyed.
4. What was the most important factor in Lincoln’s successful reelection in
1864?
The factor was the Union victories and the fact that he had 55% of the
popular votes.
