Biography of Bernat

Enric Bernat was born in a family of pastry chefs of three generations and began his working
life in the bakery of his parents. In 1950 he created his own business and founded a
confectionery factory called "Productos Bernat", which was joined by his then fiancée, Nuria
Serra, daughter of another family of confectioners from Barcelona. The young couple
promoted the business, until absorbing in 1954 an Asturian company that produces apple
products, called "Granja Asturias". In 1958, Enric Bernat bought the patent for a spherical
candy with a stick called "Gol", which was manufactured by the Barcelona industry "Reñé SA",
and that same year the new candy "Chups" was launched, presented as a small children's
luxury that allowed to consume the candy without getting dirty fingers.

Lollipops.

During the 1980s, Bernat failed to acquire insurance company Iberia de insurance to finance a
new investment bank in Catalonia. Despite the loss, he bought the property of the Casa Batlló
from the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. In 1991 he left the formal control of Chupa Chups
to his son Javier. The brand also created the subsidiary company Smint in 1994.

With his wife Nuria Serra he had three sons and two daughters. Bernat died of natural form to
the 80 in his house of Barcelona, the 27 of December of 2003. In 2006 his children sold the
company to the Italian group Perfetti van Melle.3
