u You can use a possessive gerund when you want to indicate the performer of the
action.

u Ex. I object to their playing loud music late at night

u In informal spoken English, it is acceptable to use a name, a noun or an object


pronoun instead of a possessive, but only if the gerund phrase is the direct object in
the sentence

u Ex. I object to them playing loud music late at night

u But never use a name, noun, or an object pronoun if the gerund is the subject of the
sentence. Use a possessive.

u Ex. Either people should smoke outside or they shouldn’t smoke at all

u Neither… nor

u Ex. I would allow neither spitting nor littering

u Not only… but

u Ex. Not only is it dangerous to text while driving, but it may be illegal
