Last week a friend of mine invited me to a party. She didn’t mention what kind of party it was going to be and I didn’t ask
either. My mistake. So when the day came, I wore my beautiful black highheels, my favorite jeans and a nice t-shirt. As it
was a sunny day I decided not to take my sweater. When I arrived at the party, I saw that the others wore different kind
of clothes. It was a beach party, so the other girls wore white dresses or long skirts with white BBDs, and sandals. I felt
terrible, so I decided to go back home and changed my clothes.

 Se solicita a los estudiantes que se agrupen en pares y respondan las siguientes preguntas:
 What did the writer wear for the party?
 Did she know the kind of party it was?
 What did she finally do?

FASHION THROUGH DECADES

50s
In the 1950s fashion was very feminine. Back then, women wore cocktail dresses, bolero
jackets, pencil skirts, ballerina shoes and gloves. The silhouette was hour-glass shaped.
Pastel colours and various shades of grey were in. The designers who created in the 50s
were Valentino and Balenciaga.
60s
In the early sixties women wore anything that Jackie Kennedy wore – jackets and pencil
skirts. In the mid sixties, women wore miniskirts until the hippie style became popular. Bell
sleeves, trapeze dresses, tie-dye t-shirts were the main symbols of the Woodstock fashion.
70s
Disco fever in the 1970s brought glitter, bell-bottom pants, sparkling clothes, etc. On the
other hand, women were fond of A-line skirts, tweed, platform shoes and Annie Hall
menswear look. Gucci and Ralph Lauren were the main designers.
80s
In the 1980s we have a big emerge of pop music fashion, acid washed jeans, big hair,
balloon skirts, ballerina flats, leggings, big sweaters. The colours were very bright, neon
and bold. The silhouette was bulky top and skinny bottom, usually with shoulder pads and
tight jeans.
90s
Beverly Hills TV series and the grunge era of Kurt Cobain summed up the fashion of the
1990s. Women wore baggy, comfortable, flannel shirts combined with Dr. Marten’s shoes
on one side and feminine dresses and shorts skirts on the other.
