Lesson Idea Name: The Life Cycle E-Book (animals)

Content Area: Life Science
Grade Level(s): 2nd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living organisms. a.
Ask questions to determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as
a cat, dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a
butterfly

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Discovery Education & PowerPoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

• The activity includes accommodates for visual and audio learners
• Students have access to materials beyond the classroom and can be reviewed after instruction
• The PowerPoint allows students a voice in creativity of presentation.
• Learning is enhanced by integrating student’s actual voice in the presentation. Students can narrate
their projects.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will introduce the lesson by reviewing the standard. The teacher will demonstrate reaching the
standard by discussing the life of common animals. The teacher will introduce the butterfly life cycle using a
video from Discovery Education. As the class discusses the video, the teacher will introduce using PowerPoint
to display what they’ve learned about life cycles. The teacher may have the example of butterfly life cycle
completed prior to class or may walk through the process if students are unaware how to use this technology.
After creating the PowerPoint as a class, the teacher will instruct the students to choose a different animal
(standard appropriate) and create an e-book with voice audio.
The students may access Discovery Education, BrainPOP, or another educational approved website for
their information. The project may take a few days to complete. After the students have created their
slideshow, the teachers will set up groups to voice record and share their movies to the teacher’s computer.
The teacher will provide feedback individually with the student prior to voice recording the presentation using
a checklist. Some students may need assistance and can choose a partner based on the animal life cycle they
chose. We will conclude the lesson with a presentation day.

Reflective Practice: I believe the activities the students complete will help them utilize the technology by
exploring its features and ignite new ideas. The students are given opportunities to create new products with
their own choices, while also expressing their voice through the narration. I would most likely use this at the
end of a unit for review of what the students have learned in life science. To extend the lesson, the teacher
could publish the students mp4 files to the classroom web page to display the current learning taking place in
the classroom.
