Towards UPSR which will be in September, most teachers are quite worried about their students'
writing ability and capability.
How should teachers prepare their Yearly Scheme of Work so that it really "benefits" the writing
preparation?
Would it be that practical to copy and paste someone else's work and execute it?
Here are some suggestions to be considered in planning the Yearly Scheme of Work:
1. Ensure writing skills are being given more focus and priority. Meaning, have more such skills being
developed throughout the week as UPSR demands students more to write and not to listen and
speak.
2. List at least 20 Essay topics for one semester and topics should always depict Malaysian
background and landscape. Essays should also incorporate common good values such as
helping, thanking, appreciating, being grateful etc. Apart from that, essays should involve family,
neighborhood, community and school surroundings and sentiments, as well.
3. Avoid essays on disaster like flood, fire, tsunami etc and tragedy like snatch theft, fatal.road
accidents, bully or any other that obviously does not promote moral values. Reason? They won't
come out in exams.
Initial English lessons should focus on characters that exist in essays. Helps students to identify
characters in the pictures. At the same time, revise the use of 4 common personal and possessive
pronouns:
He She They It
Note : Ignore I, you and we
C. POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS:
5. Then, revise name of days and teach weak students to construct this pattern:
It was Sunday.
WHY? Because this sentence will the first sentence for the weak ones when they write.
went to
went home
wanted
arrived
helped
saw
thanked
happy
LESSON 1

8. Make sure words like thanked, happy or grateful are used in the last paragraph.
