7. A line shaft runs at 350 rpm. An 18 inches pulley on the same shaft is belt connected
to a 13 in pulley on the countershaft. From a 16 in pulley on the countershaft, motion is
transmitted to the machine. Design the required diameter (in inches and mm) of the
pulley on the machine to give a spindle speed of 670 rpm. (ME board 2007)

8. A pump is to be driven by a 50 hp, 2410 rpm diesel engine and operating under a
moderate shock load with service factor of 1.20. The pump will operate at 800 rpm and
using type B V-belt. The available small sheave diameter is 5.4 in and having a factor
of 1.14. The arc of contact factor is 0.89 and the length of belt factor is 0.97. Design
the number of belts to be use. (ME board 1995)

9. Compute the angle of contact of the smaller pulley for a belt dirve with a 72 in center
distance. The pulley diameters are 6 in and 12 in. also compute for the length of belt
needed, using a formula for approximate length of open belt.

10. In the above problem, the 6 in pulley rotates 600 rpm. Total slip amount to 4%.
Compute the rotational speed of the 12 in pulley.

11. An open belt drive has a 6 in pulley driving 48 in pulley. The distance between centers
is 96 in. Compute the exact length of belt needed.
