Rock and roll


Popular music at the end f the 1940s was slow and traditional. Then, black
musicians in the USA started to play strong, exciting ‘rhythm and blues’ music.
Soon, radio disk jockeys (DJs) started to play rhythm and blues, and one DJ,
Alan Freed, called it ‘rock and roll’.
Teenagers loved rock and roll immediately because it was fast, fun and young.
In the 1950s, the police tried stop teenagers dancing at rock and roll concerts.

Elvis Presley
Elvis was born in 1935. When he was young, he learned to sing in church, and
he played the guitar and the piano. He was shy, but he was also very ambitious.
His first record weren’t big hits, but he soon became the most popular rock
and roll singer in the world.
In the five days after Elvis died in 1977, people bought 8 million of his
records! Today, people still call him ‘the King’ of rock and roll.
