Casting on (CO)

Make a loop, leaving a 12-in.
(30 cm) tail. Insert the needle
into the loop and tighten. This
is the first stitch.
Hold the needle with the first
stitch in your left hand and the
working fiber in back.
Hold the empty needle in your
right hand, and slide its tip
through the stitch on the left-
hand needle from the front of
the stitch to the back. The
needles will form an X, with the
right-hand needle in back.
Hold the crossed needles
between your left thumb and
forefinger. Using your right hand,
wrap the working fiber counter-
clockwise around the tip of the
right-hand needle.
Pull the tip of the right-hand
needle down and through the
stitch, pulling the new stitch
through. Gently stretch the stitch
on the right-hand needle.
Working from left to right,
slide the tip of the left-hand
needle through the stitch on the
right-hand needle as shown.
Slide the right-hand needle out
of the stitch, leaving two stitches
on the left-hand needle. Pull gently
to tighten the second stitch.
Continue until you have cast on
the required number of stitches.

Slide a strung bead up to the last
stitch you knit, and snug it up.
Binding off (BO)
Knit two stitches as if to begin a new row.
Slide the tip of the left-hand needle into the
outer stitch, pull it up and over the inner
stitch, and drop it off the needle.
Knit your next stitch, maintaining
the tension in your fiber.
This leaves one stitch on the right. Knit
another stitch, then drop the outer stitch
as before.
Repeat, adding beads. The beads will
be on the back of your work, facing away
from you.
When you turn your work to knit the
next row, the beads will be on the front,
facing you.
When one stitch remains, cut the fiber to
tail length, enlarge the stitch slightly, and
remove the needle. Pass the tail through
the stitch, and gently pull to tighten. Use a
tapestry needle to weave the tail neatly in
and out of several stitches. Trim the tail
close to the knitting.
