The Number of High School Smokers in Thailand

One of the biggest problems today is teenage smoking. According to World health

organization (2016), nearly 90% of adult smokers start while they are still teens, and they

never intend to get hooked. They may start by having friends who are smokers, media

influence and family issues. Soon, they may realize that they want to smoke more. Today,

teens can buy their smoking product whenever they want from the store or online. According

to Drug(2017), each day 6,000 young adult under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette.

Almost 2,000 of them will become regular smokers that’s 757, 000 new smokers annually.

MUIDS should find a solution on smoker.

The purpose of this research to find out the number of teenage smoker in MUIDS.

The importance is for MUIDS to realize that in their school still have some students who are

still smoking and should do something to them. The author uses three academic articles from

different sources to relate the results and interpretation of the survey to other research studies.

In this survey, the author asked “do you smoke and how did you get into smoking.”

The first figure shows 25 teen or 32.05% of the students who are smoking and 53 teen or

67.9% of the students who aren't smoking. More students in MUIDS are not smoking and that

is great, but there are still 32.05% or 25 teens that are smoking. The second figure shows the

most chosen reason for their reason of smoke which is ‘Want to try', followed by ‘Peer
Influence ’ and ‘Other’ with the percentage of 55%, 36.9%, and 7% respectively. School

should do something with 25 teens because if the school decide to leave these 25 teens that

are smoking, they may influence their friends or others to smoke with them. In summary, the

school should find a way to decrease the number of students that are smoking.

Some high schools students choose to smoke rather than not smoking. From this

question, the school should look at how their students start to smoke by friends and media.

Teen smoking can cause significant impact on the environment such as environmental

pollution. However, it is worth noting that teenage smoking causes a vital influence to one’s

adult life because most adult smokers have been found to start smoking during their youthful

stages (Kimuyu, 2018). In adults, cigarette smoking causes heart disease and stroke. Studies

have shown that early signs of these diseases can be found in adolescents who smoke (World

health organization 2016). Thus, every school should find a way or solution for this problem

in order to prevent making more smoking adult and become a part of helping decrease the

overall number of smoker in general.

This research report concludes that at MUIDS schools, there are some students who

are still smoking. The factors which cause their students to smoke is they want to try, but

some got started by having friends who are smokers. MUIDS should consider this as a big

issue. Thus, they should solve this problem in order to decrease the number of teen smokers

in the school.
