ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the ‘Perspective of the parents with children who
have vices’. The researchers sought to identify the perception of parents with children who
have vices; the effects of having vices of their children to their family; and how do they
manage the situations as parents. The three (3) selected parents were chosen using
purposive sampling technique from Sitio Fori, Brgy. Talipan Pgbilao, Quezon. The
researchers used case study method and structured interview questions as the instruments.
In conducting this research, the researchers’ structured interview questions were
checked by their research adviser, then the researchers selected the three (3) parents in who
were be personally interviewed. The data gathered was interpreted to formulate conclusions
and recommendations.
At the end of the study the researchers were able to know that the perception of
parents with children who have vices are: having vices of their children is bad for the
health and the common forms of vices their that children do are smoking and drinking
which were acquired from their peers and is seen from their parents. And based on the
findings the effects of having vices of their children to their family are: their children could
not have with household chores due to hangover because of drinking that’s why they are
asleep all day. Constant worrying of the parents because their child comes home very late
at night. Another one is the smoking of the older children which affects the health of the
young ones because of being a second hand smoke. Also based on the result(s), the
situation is handled by not being too much strict or by not being too hard on them so that
they will not rebel and be deeply involved in others form of misdeeds. On the other hand,
parents are giving their children time and advice and it is also needed that the parents
should have good relationships and communication with their children. A side from it
effects on their health, the children also tend to skip classes and hangout anywhere with
their peers that is why as parents they should tell their children to stay away from their
peers that could be a bad influence to them. The researchers recommendation, Seminar for
the parents that will include tips or advices on how to build a deeper connections with their
children, and how they could handle situation more professionally and discreetly when they
would encounter these kinds of problems in which could develop bad effects in their
children's academic performance, in their family ànd in their lives. The researchers
recommend this study as the reference of a new study especially in vice.

INTRODUCTION

Excessive cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and drug use are the increasing

problems in the community, not only in the Philippines but also in the neighboring

countries. The number of users is increasing and what is more alarming is that the age of

the users is decreasing.

The youth is the future. They are the hope of the nation. According to Aguiatan

(2014) stated that today, the number of younger people is at its highest, and due to the

increasing number of population, sometimes the members of the adolescents are neglected,

which can lead to problems today and in the years ahead. Adolescence is also a time when

people start to associate themselves more with friends and contacts. They feel an increased

pressure to ‘fit in ‘or ‘go along with the crowd in order to be accepted socially. These new

circumtances can be confusing and difficult for the youth to understand and deal with.

Often their ability to make corrector safe decisions are also at age of immaturity.

Moreover, Due to the high technology and advancing generation, many significant

opportunities as well as serious health risk are given to the youths of the day. Adolescents

are able to attend school and gain from much technological process which made them

vulnerable and exposed to a growing number of diverse threats in the community.

Potentially harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco and other drugs are now more

readily available to adolescents and threaten their health, both in the short and long term.

In addition, Adolescents are not exempled from the problem in our society. I would

make them better equiped to face the world, as persons who know who and what they are

for. Being worked up with stress of life, adolescents tend to them divert their attention to

different things such as smoking, drinking and even drug use.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It has been very obvious that new generations today are facing a more difficult and

complicated phases of life than before. Teens have envolved into conscious, curious and

liberal individuals who can easily be influenced by several factors which can mold a person

and turn them into someone good or bad.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the perception of the parents with

children who have vices and to achieve a better understanding in order to know how the

respondents make a decision when it comes the bad habits of their children. Vices are

generally thought of as habits or behaviors that are, at best, unacceptable, and at their worst

immoral. Yet there are those vices that have become so common place that we've ceased to

recognize them as such, depending on the culture you live in (Gordillo, 2009).

According to the World Health Organization [WHO], 22% of world’s population

aged over 15 years is smokers and approximately six million tobacco use or exposure. The

studies about the perception of parents with children who have vices help youth and

students to distinguish the harmful effects of having bad habits to their life.

It aims to explore how youth conceptualize bad habits within the context of their

own life situations with attention to their perspective on parental and family-related bad

habits issues and experiences.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main objective of this study was to determine the perception of the pare nts with

children who have vices,

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1) What are the perceptions of the parents with children who have vices?

2) What are the effects of having vices of their children to their family?

3) How do they manage the situations as parents?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study would be very significant because the researchers would be able to determine

the Bad habits diehard: A qualitative study on the perspective of the parents with children

who have vices. In this regard, this will be helpful to the following:

For Parents: Through this study, they will become aware on why these children do such

things and what incite them to do it.

For Teenagers: Through this study, they can learn alarming and/ or truthful facts how

vices destroy their bodies if not stopped and careful consideration for making their choice

to develop those bad habits.

Future Researchers: Through this study, they can gain useful information or knowledge

about why student’s teenagers are able to develop those vices. And they can use this

research as their in making their research.

For the Researchers: The benefit that the researchers will acquire is that they will receive

good marks for conducting this research .It is also their partial requirement to be able to

pass Grade11. It will also be be beneficial to them in understanding all possible outcomes

of the effects of vices.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aimed to determine the Bad habits diehard: A qualitative study on the

perspective of the parents with children who have vices. The research was conducted on

March 8, 2019 at Sitio Fori Bgry. Talipan Pagbilao Quezon. The research respondents will

be the 3 selected parents with children who have vices using the purposive sampling

technique. This study compiled with the researchers started on January 21, 2019 up to

March 13, 2019.

The weaknesses of this study are financial, because in financial matters the

researcher doesn’t have enough money in conducting our research topic or problem. Seond

is place, because the researchers having difficulties in seeking for place where the study

will be conducted.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Behavioural theory
According to Watson theory (1913) cited from the study of Cancer Council Victoria

(2012) Tobacco in Australia: Facts and Issues .Behavioural theory (or behaviourism) focus

on how people learn to behave in particular ways. Behaviourism was born from two main

schools of thought:

 Classical conditioning, whereby a person learns to associate two previously

unrelated stimuli .In terms of smoking, a person can learn to associate smoking with

other feelings and events (such as being in a stressful situation or having a coffee)

and these situations then automatically induce cravings and ‘cue’ his or her

smoking behaviour.

 Operant conditioning, which posits that behaviour, is shaped by its consequences

(i.e., reward or punishment). When nicotine is inhaled, it causes a rapid release of

dopamine, in turn causing feelings of pleasure that reward and reinforces the

behaviour. This pleasure and reinforcement drive the process of addiction.

Behavioural modification approaches to smoking cessation are underpinned by these

principles. Behavioural approaches to cessation focus on changing habits and patterns that

cue smoking, replacing smoking with a different, more desirable behaviour, rewarding

abstinence, and emphasising the immediate and longer term benefits of quitting. A review

of behavioural interventions for smoking cessation found that most report moderate success

in quitting at six months.

This theory focuses on how teenagers associate their vices in dealing with

problems or stress. Their cravings in doing that certain vice adds up as they lern to

associate certain situations with vices as their primary option of being able to solve their

problematic or chaotic situations.

Social Theory

According to Harrington (2011) Social theory refers to ideas, arguments,

hypotheses, thought-experiments and explanatory speculations about how and why human

societies—or elements or structures of such societies—come to be formed, change, and

develop over time or disappear. Usually supported in research institutions as a core

component of the discipline of sociology, social theory most commonly encompasses the

range of explanatory concepts, analytical tools, and heuristic devices on which sociologists

and social scientists draw in their efforts to interpret statistical or qualitative data about

particular empirical social phenomena. Social theory in this relatively narrowly delimited

sense is usually thought of as more or less synonymous with the term.

The theory talks about why certain ideas, actions, and practices may change over

time or disappear. This is somehow due to the facts that a teenager may learn to do some

vices through the way others do it, or may try to develop it through expressed ideas by their

friends.

Social Action Theory

The social action theory was founded by Weber (1864 – 1920). There are two main

types of sociologicl theories; the first is the structural or macro theory while the other is

social action, interpretive or micro perspective.

URSE MARKERS IN PHILIPPINE ENGLISH
TALIPAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM
Talipan, Pagbilao, Quezon, Philippines 15

As the ‘micro’ name suggests social action perspective exmine smaller groups

within society. Unlike structuralism, they are also concerned with the subjective states of

individuals. Very much unlike structurlist perspective, social action theorists see society as

a product of human activity.

Stucturalism is a top-down, deterministic perspective the examined the way in

which society as a whole fits together. Functionalism and Marxism are both structuralist

perspectives:a s such, they both perceive human activity as the result of social structure.

Max Weber believed that it was social actions that should be the focus of study in

sociology. To Weber, a ‘social action’ was an action carried out by an individual attached a

meaning.

Therefore an action that a person does not think about cannot be a social action.

Eg.An accident collision of bicycles is not a social action as they are not a result of any

conscious thought process. On the other hand, a wood cutter cutting wood has a motive, an

intention behind that action. It is therefore ‘a social action’.

In social action theory, Weber believes that bureaucratic organisations are the

dominant institutions in society. Weber believes that bureaucracies (institutions) consist of

individuals carrying out rationl social actions designed to achieve the goals of

bureaucracies. Weber views the whole development of modern societies in terms of a move

towards rational social action. Thus, modern societies are undergoing the process of

rationalization.

This theory is about why human activity is a product of social structure. This means

that the practices of vices are developed by people doing it on or consistent basis in the

surrounding of the teenagers. The teenagers are affected by this daily practice of vices

around them.

The three theories discussed all talked about certain behaviors which lead to the

cause of teenagers carrying out different vices. It could be through peer pressure, handling

of daily problems or stress, and through how they see other person do it in their

surroundings. All these factors are eventually responsible of why teengers develop their

own habits of having vices or adapting to their surrounding by also doing it.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

For the purpose of citing of denotative and connotative of each of the following terms is

very important to understand each of them:

Alcoholism - result of a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental and social

factors. The more risk factors a person exhibits, the more likely they are to become an

alcoholic. And sometimes those risk factors are entirely out of the person`s control.

Bad habit – a patterned behavior regarded as detrimental to one`s physical or mental

health, which is often linked to a lack of self-control.

Drug abuse – Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive

substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.

Drug addiction – Drug addiction is a complex and chronic brain disease. People who a

drug addiction experience compulsive, sometimes uncontrollable, craving for their drug of

choice.

Drug user – Is a person who take drugs in grate amount and frequency for purposes other

than medicine.

Habit – A behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that

shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance.

Gambler – Is a person of is engaged in gambling.

Gambling – Refers to wagering of money or item of value on an uncertain event that is

dependent

Perception – The way you think about or understand someone or something.

Smoker – Is a person who is engaged in smoking and consumes cigarettes.

Smoking – The act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material. A variety

of plant materials are smoked, including marijuana and hashish, but the act is most

commonly associated with tobacco as smoked in a cigarette, cigar, or pipe.

Vice – Is a habitual practice that alters the normal activities of a person’s daily living. Vice

as used in the study is habitual practice of using tobacco, alcohol, illicit drug, and

gambling.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

This chapter discusses all gathering principles, theories, and information that are

related to the present study. These are contained in the related literature and studies of this

chapter.

RELATED LITERATURE

Adolescent are expose to vices at early age

According to the Mayo Clinic, those who begin drinking at an early age are more

likely to have an alcohol problem or a physical dependence on alcohol as they get older.

Not only is this because drinking may become a comfortable habit, but also because the

body’s tolerance levels may increase.Young people begin gambling for purely innocent

reasons, often at a very early age and with the endorsement of their parents and family.

Afternoon poker games, sports betting and participation in sweepstakes, 50-50 drawings

and casino nights provide a “stamp of approval.” Like with alcohol and drugs, young

people see people they respect engaged in these activities and deem them to be acceptable.

When an opportunity to gamble presents itself, they are often more open and accepting of it

(Adolescent Gambling Prevention, n.d)

Moreover, more than one in every eight Filipino aged 13–15 years old have been

found to be puffing tobacco products, according to the [Youth and Tobacco in the Western

Pacific Region: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) (2005-2014)] report of the World

Health Organization (WHO).

Most drug users begin taking drugs at an early age, as adolescents or even younger.

Taking drug while the body is still for might interrupts the normal maturing process and

compounds the danger posed to the user as an adult. When children cannot multiply or

divide satage 11, they can be taught at age 12. But when a child’s mindis destroyed by

drugs, that child may not be able to start again the time lost and the damage than may be a

irreversible.

Furthermore, such young users are less aware than adults of the risk of substance

abuse and or more likely to have more serious problems with a later in life. Student who

use marijuana regularly are statistically twice as likely to receive below average mark or

failing gardes, school drop – outs are twice as likely to be frequent drug users.

Moreover, drugs can also disrupt entire school. When many students in a class are

under the influence of drugs, or absent because of drug abuse, the progress of all students is

impeded. Also, the pressure is increased or those young people who resist drugs. In

addition, drug use brings into the school environment the illegal activities connected to

drug use: theft prostitution and selling of drugs to others.

Causes (drugs, alcohol, gambling and smoking)

Causes of drug addiction have been suggested, many people still believe

psychological factors comprise the bulk of what causes drug addiction. Some of the

psychological causes of drug addiction appear to stem from trauma, often when the drug

addict is young. Sexual or physical abuse, neglect, or chaos in the home can all lead to

psychological stress, which people attempt to "self-medicate" (decrease the stress's pain

through drug use). This self-medication becomes a cause of drug addiction (healthy place,

 Other psychological causes of drug addiction include:

 A mental illness such as depression

 Inability to connect with others, lack of friends

 Poor performance at work or school

 Poor stress coping skills

According to Burke (2017) lcohol use develops when you drink so much that

chemical changes in the brain occur. These changes increase the pleasurable feelings you

get when you drink alcohol. This makes you want to drink more often, even if it causes

harm. Eventually, the pleasurable feelings associated with alcohol use go away and the

person with alcohol use disorder will engage in drinking to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

These withdrawal symptoms can be quite unpleasant and even dangerous.

He mentioned that the factors associatedwith increased risk for anytime of illicit

drug use include at least one or more of the following: Poor parent – child relations, some

studies show that living in a stressful home environment with relatively little parental

support and monitoring places adolescents at greater risk for drug use. Family environment

that model drug use where in adolescents are more likely to use drug if someone in their

home uses drugs. For example, parents who use drugs may practice poor preventing which

may increase the rates of drug abuse for adolescents. Also parental or sibling drug use sets

a model of acceptable in appropriate behavior for teens, makes it seem like a normal part of

life, and may encourage it acceptance by youth peer group drug use, during adolescents,

feels become a major influence because of the increase time spent with them outside of the

home. Some teens feel pressured to fit in and do what their friends are doing. Consequently

teens that are have friends who use drug are more likely to use drug themselves. High risk

communities, living in communities where drug use is wide spread not only make drug

accessibility easier, but also normalize the act of using drug. Low self – steem, adolescents

who do not have positive views of themselves, or who lack support and encouragement

from others are more likely to use drugs. Poor school achievement, some teens who have

negative attitudes towards school and low expectations of academic success are at

increased risk of drug use. Also, teens who use drugs typically exhibit declines in grades,

and inconsistent attendance at school.

According to World Health Organization [WHO] Report on the Global Tobacco

Epidemic (2011).Smoking is a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality world

wide. Tobacco smoking causes annually 6 million deaths worldwide and is projected to

exceed 8 million by 2030.According to statistics from the World Health Organization

(WHO).

1. Smoking was identified as the most important cause of preventable morbidity and

premature death

2. This ratio is estimated to increase to 10 million in 20–30 years. Due to tobacco use, the

morbidity rate is 70% in developing countries, and these countries are the ones in which

problems due to epidemic tobacco use are mostly seen3-5.

The WHO estimates the number of smoking Research Paper.

Tobacco Induced Diseases Tob. Induc.Dis. 2018, 31 billion, globally a total of 700 million

male smokers is located in developing countries, and 47% of men and 12% of women

smoke a total of 6 trillion cigarettes a year world.

According to Maney (2013) every person’s gambling addiction story is different.

Some problem gamblers started to make money, others began because it was a good

distraction from other emotional or physical issues, and many people crave the thrill

gambling creates due to chance of winning money or other prizes. But those early stages of

gambling can all lead to serious problems as the addiction takes over other aspects of life,

including financial, domestic and workplace behaviors

A recent review of the research on adolescent gambling identified that the majority

of research on youth gambling is undertaken by a small group of researchers in Canada, the

United States and Britain. Other key findings included that adolescent gambling research

is: most commonly investigated with respect to alcohol use; not ethnically diverse; and,

mostly quantitative, descriptive and empirically based (Blinn-Pike et al., 2010).

Effects of having vices of adolescent

Smoking and drinking share many detrimental effects, some of which operate

synergistically.Over 90% of alcoholic inpatients are smokers, with similar findings

regarding outpatients. In the general population, the relationship between smoking and

drinking appears positive but modest. Nicotine appears to facilitate ethanol consumption

and vice versa. While ample theoretical viewpoints exist to explain the covariance of

alcohol and cigarette consumption, conclusive data supporting one or another of these

views are lacking. The assumption that alcoholics should be discouraged from quitting

smoking as well as drinking is without empirical basis. Research should ascertain whether

problem drinkers with greater positive association between alcohol and smoking benefit

differentially from quitting both. ( Bien & Burge,2009).

Anyone who gets caught up in the downward spiral of problem gambling finds only

too soon that the negative impact on his or her life can be devastating. Finding money to

gamble is usually the most immediate and obvious issue which brings with it enough

problems, but in addition an all consuming compulsion to gamble at any cost leads to

difficulties which affect employment, quality of life, family relationships and mental and

physical health.

And of course, problem gambling doesn't just affect the individual. It's estimated

that for every problem gambler at least 10 other family members, friends and colleagues

are also directly affected. The negative impact on wider society is only just beginning to be

recognised and an analysis of those problem gamblers in the (Gordon Moody Association

residential treatment programme , 2012 & 2013 )

Alcohol and drugs target a part of the brain that allows people to feel pleasure. This

causes the brain to release certain chemicals that make people feel good. At first, these

substances may make a person feel happy, energetic, social, self-confident, and powerful.

But after the "high" from the alcohol or drug wears off, he or she may feel the opposite

effects. Depending on the substance used, a person may feel tired, anxious, or depressed

after the substance wears off. Or he or she may be more sensitive to pain, have sleep

problems, lose interest in everyday activities, or withdraw from family and friends.Since

the pleasure only lasts a short time, people crave more of the substance to get the good

feeling back. Over time, the brain adjusts to the substance by making less of the "feel

good" chemicals. With less of these chemicals, the brain can't function as well, and it

becomes harder to feel pleasure. So people use alcohol or drugs to get the good feeling

back.Alcohol and drugs also affect the parts of the brain that deal with judgment, decision-

making, problem-solving, emotions, learning, and memory. They change how the cells in

the brain send and process information. These changes in the brain make it harder for

people to think and make good choices. And they may be less able to control their actions

students grade 9-12, from Sarakhs County in study year 2010-2011. Study tool was a self-

administrated questionnaire. From 943 participating students, 181(19.2%) had history of

smoking. The mean age of smokers was 16.59±1.1, and the mean age of initiating smoking

was 14.35±2.1 years. Of the smokers, 121(66.9%) were male and 124(68.7%) students

were aware of smoking hazards. Public broadcasting, family, and newspapers were the

most common sources of students' knowledge about smoking. Recreation and

entertainment, peer group impact, and curiosity were the most frequent predisposing

factors for smoking from students' perspectives. The relationship between smoking and

school type, field of study, school failing, and having a smoker father, brother or friend was

significant (p<0.001). The concomitant use of illegal drugs was more common between

smoker students; marijuana 4.9, alcohol 1.2, Psychoactive Pills 2.5 and Betel Nut (Nas) 3.4

times were more common.

The ways in which researchers have empirically approached the phenomenon of

advertising and marketing of products such as alcohol, unhealthy foods, tobacco, and

gambling can be summarized into four main dimensions of problematization. The first

cocerns how commercial actors choose to communicate. The main dilemma pertaining to

thisquestion cocerns dishonesty of information upon with the consumers act in ways that

harm themselves, others, and society a large. This dimension typicallyhy pothesizes an

effect of a deceitful, “wrongful,”and incorrect message. It also involves the moral

wrongfulness of telling lies per se (see marketing message ethics book). The attention

given to the different problematic aspects may vary between cultures and the products

being marketed (de Mooiji, 2010; Robert & arnab. 2013).

The illicit use of drugs, including alcohol, by teenagers has been extensively

studied and documented. It is not uncommon for teenagers to be involved in illicit drug use

before exhibiting signs and symptoms of drug use. Unsuspecting parents may be unaware

of drug use in their children. The authors’ objective in this article is to review the literature

on illicit drug use in teenagers and highlight the risk factors for teen involvement. The

authors also review the warning signs that a teen is using illicit drugs. The aim of this

article is to assist parents and healthcare workers involved in substance use intervention

programs to be more aware of these risk factors and warning signs in order to adopt early

screening and intervention measures (Innov Cli Neurosci., 2011).

A recent study by the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs

(2016) found that, while drinking and smoking amongst 15-16-year-olds are showing signs
URSE MARKERS IN PHILIPPINE ENGLISH

of decline, there are concerns over new addictive behaviours, such as excessive internet

use, online gaming and gambling.

In addition, teenagers and young adults who abuse drugs and alcohol are more

likely to indulge in risky sexual behavior. Evidence has shown that young people who

abuse drugs are less likely to use protection during sex and are more likely to have sex with

strangers. This considerably increases the chances of contracting sexually transmitted

diseases (STDs) and teen pregnancy.

The WHO estimates the number of smoking Research Paper.

Tobacco Induced Diseases Tob. Induc.Dis. 2018, 31 billion, globally a total of 700 million

male smokers are located in developing countries, and 47% of men and 12% of women

smoke a total of 6 trillion cigarettes a year world.

METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES

This chapter is the methodology of the study. It includes the research design, research

sample, respondents, research locale, research instrumentation and data gathering

procedures.

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study used qualitative research which method is case study. Case studies are

based on an in-depth investigation of a single individual, group or event to explore the

causes of underlying principles.

A case study is relevant the more your research questios works or if your research

question require an “in-depth” description of some social phenomenon. The focus is non

understanding these social phenomenons (Robert, 2009). This design was selected because

it gave the researchers a chance to explore in depth and to gather relevant information

about the present existing condition of the study and understand the nature of each

responsive opinions and to obtain are the necessary information about the research study.

RESEARCH SAMPLE

The research sample of this study consisted of parents who are experienced with

children who have vices. The subjects of study were 3 parents from Sitio Fori Brgy.

Talipan Pagbilao, Quezon. The subjects were chosen using purposive sampling technique.

Qualitative research, usually utilize small number of samples. The quality of sample

is more important than the number of samples because in Qualitative Research, it is not

representation as a sample population but only theoretical. So that the sampling technique is
URSE MARKERS IN PHILIPPINE ENGLISH
TALIPAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Talipan, Pagbilao, Quezon, Philippines 29

usually non-probability, such as purposive sampling. Purposive sample is a non-

probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a population and the

objective of the study, 3 people could be appropriate (Febriana, 2012).

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The main instrument used in this study is in-depth interview in collecting data for

this study. An interview is an important qualitative research method in which the researcher

collects data directly from the participants. Mostly paired with other research methods like

survey, focus group etc., interviews are significant in unfolding opinions, experiences,

values and various other aspects of the population under study. Interviews are always goal

oriented (Showkat, 2017). The research instrument that was employed by the researchers

was validated by the research adviser. This serve as the most important tool in gathering

relevant data that helped to answers the statement of the problem.

SUBJECTS

In this study, the subjects were selected from Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan Pagbilao,

Quezon the researchers desired to choose them as subject because they are involve of

having vices of their children. The three (3) selected parents were chosen by the

researchers using purposive sampling technique. This aims to determine the ‘Perspective of

parents with children who have vices’.The parents from Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan are the

chosen subject since they responsible for the parenting, caring and knowing the habits of

their children. This study concluded to the research instruments were fine for the

researchers since they are not forced to answer during the interview. The subject was also

asked to sign the informed consent form to provide ethical consideration.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study was conducted at Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan Pagbilao, Quezon outside of

Talipan National High School so that the elders will become aware of the students and

other teenagers on the effects of having vices and make careful consideration for making

their choice to develop those vices. Last September 26, 2018 at 10:00 in the morning,

during the conduct of Child’s Right Seminar, PO1 Julie Ann C Loterte, PCR member,

discussed the RA 9165, Drug Abuse and Vices among 200 students of Talipan National

High School, Brgy. Talipan, Pagbilao, Quezon. It said to be the parents outside of the

school was responsible for the care, safety and knowing the habits of their children for their

better future.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The three (3) selected parents from Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan Pagbilao, Quezon were

the participants of this study.

Step1: Checking of the structured interview questions made by the researchers.

Step 2: Selecting three (3) parents using purposive sampling technique from
Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan Pagbilao, Quezon.

Step 3: Conducting the interview.

Step 4: Gathering of data by the researchers was demystified to answer the

research objectives and purpose.

Step 5: Interpreting and summarizing the findings of the gathered data

Step 6: Formulating Conclusions and Recommendations.

Figure2. DGP of Bad habits diehard: A qualitative on the perspective of the parents with

children who have vices.

The researchers used in depth interview in collecting data and structured questions

made by the researchers were checked by the research adviser. The three (3) selected

parents were chosen using purposive sampling technique, from Sitio Fori Brgy. Talipan

Pagbilao, Quezon. The researchers personally conducted the interview to ensure the

cooperation of the subjects. The subjects will be answers the questions base on their

personal experience. The researchers ensured the confidentiality of their subjects, and the

subjects remained anonymous. The data gathered by the researchers was analyzed to

answer the research objectives and purposes.

ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK

The researchers used 3 theories, and these are the following: Behavioural Theory,

Social Theory, and Social Action Theory. First is Behavioural Theory by Watson (1993)

cited from the study of Cancer Council Victoria (2012) Tobacco in Australia: Facts and

Issues which focus on how people learn to behave in a particular way. The next one is

Social Theory which focused on ideas, actions and practices which changes overtime or

disappears in our society. Lastly is the Social Action Theory that talks about why human

activity is a product of social structure. This means that the practice of vices consistent

basis in the surrounding.

In these 3 theories, they talked about certain behavior which leads to cause of

teenagers/ children trying out different vices. This were also used the researchers in order

to analyzed the data through addressing and rigorously examining the perceptions and

experiences of parents that have children with vices.

It shows in table 1 that from the 3 subjects whose perspective for their children with

vices is that almost all 3 of them answered that it causes a negative effect on the child's

health and the most common form of vices are smoking and drinking. One of the subject

pointed out that the children with vices have gotten it directly from the parents, while

gotten his/her vices though the influence of peer.

This supports the study of Cohn (2015) indicated that the strong relationship

between smoking and health-related consequences, very few smokers quit. Heavy drinking

is a significant risk factor for health consequences, and is implicated in persistent smoking

and less success at quitting smoking. Self-efficacy (SE) to abstain from smoking is an

important determinant of smoking outcomes and may link alcohol use to poor quit rates.

Even though research has demonstrated a strong association between drinking and

smoking, and the multiplicative effect of these substances on cancer-related, heavy-

drinking smokers has been largely ignored in the literature. Further, research has not taken

advantage of innovative methods, such as ecological momentary assessment, to capture the

impact of daily factors on smoking cessation outcomes in this particular group. The

proposed study identifies daily changing factors that impede or promote SE and future

smoking cessation efforts in risky-drinking smokers.

In addition according to the study of Hellman (2017) concluded that the Social

influences can promote or discourage adolescent substance use. The authors surveyed

4,263 sixth- to eighth-grade students to assess the effect of peer and parent influences on

adolescent substance use. The authors conducted separate multiple logistic regression

analyses for smoking and drinking, controlling for grade, sex, and race. Positive

independent associations with smoking and drinking were found for direct peer pressure

and associating with problem-behaving friends. Independent negative associations with

smoking and drinking were also found for parent involvement, parent expectations, and

parent regard. In an analysis of interactions, peer pressure was positively associated with

drinking for girls but not for boys and problem-behaving friends was positively associated

with drinking for both boys and girls. The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that

associating with deviant peers promotes and that authoritative parenting protects against

smoking and drinking.

(So sometimes, he can’t go
to school because he prefers
to go out with friends, and
we are called upon by the
teacher, also his smoking
can be easily flushed out
from his system/body.)

In table 2, it shows that the effects of children having vices in the family is that

according to the subject, it does’t have much effect. The following subject answered that

the child could not be asked to do household chores due to sleeping all stay because of

hangover a lot. The third subject, meanwhile, pointed out that the health of the older

children’s smoking affects the health of the younger siblings.Having said all this, all the

subjects said that communication and a deeper connection with their children is a must

when the child is caught up in those kinds of vices. That is why they constantly remind the
URSE MARKERS IN PHILIPPINE ENGLISH
TALIPAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

child and tells them of the bad effects if could do to them. According also to the subjects,

these vices not only affect health but certain aspects as well, like absenteeism in class and

hanging out in different kinds of places with their peers.

This supports the study of Mak (2018) concluded that the research examines the

effects of parental belief on adolescent later smoking and drinking behaviors. Previous

studies show that parental belief may have detrimental or beneficial influences

on adolescents' behaviors. Analysis is based on Wave 1 and 2 data from the

National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), N = 3232, and is

conducted using an OLS regression estimation and propensity score matching (PSM;

nearest-neighbor and kernel matching). Results show that, of adolescents who used

cigarettes and alcohol at Wave 1, they are more likely to continue the activity if their

parents were aware of it. Adolescents are also more likely to use cigarettes if their parents

believed they smoked when in fact they did not. Of adolescents who did not use alcohol, no

significant association is found between parental belief and their later alcohol use. Self-

fulfilling prophecy is proposed to explain the effects of parental belief. Results obtained

from PSM show weaker effects of parental belief, suggesting that part of the effects is

explained by shared factors which are responsible for the belief and adolescent substance

use. Adolescent concealment is proposed as an important unobserved confounder that

influences the association between parental belief and adolescent substance use. The study

suggests that research on parent-adolescent communication affected by the self-fulfilling

prophecy needs to consider adolescents' intentional concealment, which may help avoid

conflicts elicited by discussing topics that adolescents feel uncomfortable confiding in.

In addition according to the study of Pascal & Collins (2017) concluded that the

Second-hand smoke causes lung cancer in adults who have never smoked. Non-smokers

who are exposed to second-hand smoke at home or at work increase their risk of

developing lung cancer by 20–30%. Second-hand smoke causes more than 7,300 lung

cancer deaths among U.S. nonsmokers each year. As with active smoking, the longer the

duration and the higher the level of exposure to secondhand smoke, the greater the risk of

developing lung cancer.

be able to talk with them in order for their children to stay away from their peers that have

a bad influence to them and constantly remind them that nothing good will come out of

that improved parent-child communication monotonously reduces the smoking prevalence

of adolescents by as much as 70%, irrespective of social background. More complex

relationships are found for risky alcohol consumption.

misdeeds of any kind.

To the Teenagers or Adolescent, They must be careful in making decisions in life they

must know their priorities. They not forget the values they as well as showing love for

their families and themselves.

To the Students or Children, Couselling for students or children, To have the

Interviewer: Grade 11 GAS Malikhain students

Interviewee: Parents with children who have vices

Interview Setting: Interview conducted in Sitio Fori, Brgy. Talipan Pagbilao, Quezon

SUBJECT 1

(What is your perception of having vices of your children in terms of smoking, drinking

alcohol, use of drugs and gambling?)

( I am saying they are rather discipline and when they started having vices is when they

were married and their vices are only drinking a little and smoking, only that no other than

those. It is merely by influence of their peers that is why they got their vices and it is bad

for the health.)

inyong anak?”

(In this four options what does your child commonly use or do? why? why do you say so?)

(It is drinking usually and smoking, also frequently smoking after eating what: lunch,

breakfast, he smoke.)

What do you think triggers and stimulates children to have vices?

(What I meant is of course ahh… when you start to feel something is off with your mouth,

it seems that it’s pulling you to smoke that’s all.)

pamilya?Pwede ba kayong mag bigay ng halimbawa?”

(What is the effect of having vices of your children to your family? Can you give us

oncrete example?)

maninigarilyo.”

(A good example for me is my children are self-disciplined and they don’t say anything

about being a hazard to others, nothing nothing, only that their only habit is to smoke after

eating.)

(Being a parent how can you provide a moral values to your children regarding to the

negative effects of having vices?)

(Of course, when I come home all of us are tired. In the morning I work and when I leave

they have food prepared for them, and usually in the afternoon I gather all my children and

asked them Oh! Have you eaten? What did you do all day? Oh! Or are they not to work

after high school? But never did they become a problem for me, actually parents need to

have communication with their children as well as children know how to learn from their

parents. Because when you are not close to or with your children usually their peers are the

first ones they go to.)

aspeto?”

(How does a vice affect their academic performance and other aspects?)

(It becomes the reason for their absentism in class and sometimes hanging out anywhere

also what we parents know is that they are in school, but then they’re with their peers

drinking.)

may bisyo?”

(Being a parent how do you handle your children with vices?)

(I am not totally strict with them because we know as parents that if we become more strict,

they have a tendency to rebel even more and be involved in bad vices that’s all.)

(What are you doing as parent to give guidance to your children?)

kaniyang serbisyo.”

(What you need is communicating and theres apart where you can have good relationships

with each other, you just have to give your children sometime. Oh! What, what did you do

all day? Also needed is to have same mother company so that when he/she leaves there is

good service.)

(As a parent are there ways to help your children stay away from vices? What are those?)

(Giving advice and guidance and the telling of the possible things that could happen to

him/her if he/she would do those vices and he/she should limit himself/herself from his/her

peers so that he/she would stay away from those vices and be away from risks.)

kahihinatnan sakit laang.

(I am telling him/her to stop drinking and it will do him no good only sickness. And in

giving good advice or guidance in everyday life also I bring him to church in with an of us

that all.)

(When after… is always scolded or given a sermon, and sometimes hurtful words are said

but doesn’t listen. )

(Because he/she was stopped going to school that is why I encouraged him/her to just work

to stay away from those vices.)
