Farmer’s Way of Solving a Problem

Once upon a time in a serene and a verdant farm there was an ambitious farmer who is having
a problem on how to raise pigs which will grow faster and heavier so that he can gain much profit
from it. In this way, he will be able to buy his dream car.

Long before that he is not yet dreaming to buy a car; he raised his pigs by just giving them some
kitchen residues mixed with some vegetable peelings or wastes and rice bran or “lintok” from rice
mill and adding some amount of water. But with this kind of feeding practices, he had observed that
some of his pigs are experiencing LBM and quite losing their appetite and eventually resulted to the
stunted growth of his pigs. Thus, he is losing in his piggery business.

Since he is having some troubles in deciding on what kind of feeds he is going to give to his pigs
to make it grow faster, heavier, and healthier and making it more profitable, he tried to read some
books and journals about feeding of pigs and he tried also to ask some of the successful pig raisers on
what to feed to his pigs. From the information gathered by this farmer, he was able to decide to use
the commercial feeds which are quite expensive compared to local rice bran or “lintok” per sack. But
the main objective of this farmer is to gain more profit from his pigs, so he decided to mix the
“lintok” with commercial feeds at different levels of concentrations to find out which among of the
concentrations can give him more profit. To find out the effect of his feeding concentrations, he

decided to make the following feeding schemes or experiment as shown in Table I below:

Note: Amount of feeds for all Cages is the same but it is adjusted as the pigs grow bigger. Total feeds consumption is shown in Table III.
From the start of his experiment, this farmer recorded the average growth rate of each group
of pigs based on their average weight gained in every 14 days. After 140 days (almost 4 ½ months) of
study, the record showed the following data (refer to Table II):
