-A man diagnosed with autism escaped his therapist, whose name is Charles Kinsey a man of African-American origin. Mr.
Kinsley tried to subdue his patient so he would not hurt himself.
-Patrolling officer thought Mr. Kingsley was committing an assault and threatened Mr. Kingsley with lethal force if he did not
comply with orders.
-Kingsley complied, but officer still shot and injured Kingsley.
How does our knowledge influence our interpretation and assessment of threat?
Explain the connection between your real-life situation and your knowledge question:
-People in high risk jobs receive special training
-Different from normal people since they interpret risk and danger better and more quickly
-This faster interpreting means they look at danger from multiple perspectives
-They go back to their training and past experiences for counsel
-In this case, the officer had training on how to handle an aggressive situation
-He had been drilled into making automated responses
-Further supported with possible past experiences
-These factors combined, made him make a judgment that a person was in danger and he proceeded to arrest Mr. Kingsley
This led me to question the role of prior knowledge/training in dealing with threatening situations.
Outline how you intend to develop your TOK presentation in the context of your real-life situation. Include analysis
of your main knowledge question and related knowledge questions as well as arguments and perspectives.
Responses can be presented in continuous prose or as a list of points:
-Explain what training for high risk situations means in terms of quick reactions and assessment
-Explain which WoKs were implemented by the officer to assess a threat in the situation
1. Sense perception (talk about how patient was erratic which sparked reaction from officer to try to help him)
2. Reason (talk about deduction and induction)
i) Induction from past experiences (related to stereotype and statistics that black people cause more crimes)
ii) deduction should have been used to deduce that Kingsley was not a threat as he was complying with orders
-Sub KQ: Which areas of knowledge are affected and targeted when people are trained to be 911 units (police, firemen,
ambulance)?
Show the significance of your conclusions with particular reference to your real-life situation and indicate how those
conclusions might be relevant to other real-life situations:
TEACHER SECTION
Provide brief comments to support your assessment of the presentation. These should include remarks on the extent to which
the knowledge question was well formulated and connected to the real-life situation, and on the effectiveness of the arguments
and TOK analysis.
