Content What concepts or developmental skills will this lesson address?
area(s)/developmental Using NYS Pre-K Common Core Standards, children will be able to demonstrate understanding
domain(s) addressed of vocabulary such as sunlight (photosynthesis) and processes of planting. They also use their
fine motor skills to pick the seeds and put it in the soil, and water the plants.
Brief description of the lesson This lesson gets children involved in the environment and plants are essential in keeping our air
clean and can become food for us and animals. Students will be able to learn about plants from
the book “Seeds! Seeds! Seeds!” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace and then plant their own seeds and
watch it grow.
This lesson is: * A new concept/activity * A continuation of a previous lesson/activity
* A review of a previous * A conclusion of a concept
lesson/activity
Why is there a need for this lesson?
The environment has become an increasing concern for our planet and lush green plants are
Rationale essential in reviving soil and growing crops, flowers, and other plants that help our planet. This
is important for students to also understand how other living things grow as well as see the
process of the plant germinate from day to day.

Objective(s) of the activity What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning experience?
Children will be able to use their fine motor skills to plant a seed and identify the steps such as
pouring soil, planting the seed, and then watering the plant. The students will also identify the
parts of a plant by labeling important features after their plant grows.
Connections to standards Which NYS Early Learning, or Common Core Standards are addressed? Are there other standards
used? New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core:
Domain 1: Approaches to Learning
PK.AL.4 Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness in learning new things and having new
experiences.
PK.AL.5 Demonstrate persistence.
Domain 2: Physical Development and Health
PK.PDH.5 Demonstrates eye-hand coordination and dexterity needed to manipulate objects.
Domain 4: Communication, Language, and Literacy
PK.CLL.3 Demonstrates that he/she understand what they observe.
PK.CLL.4b Uses existing objects to represent desired or imagined objects in play or other
purposeful way.

PK.CKW.6 (Physical Properties) Acquire knowledge about the physcial properties of the world.
Language Objectives What language/vocabulary, communication, or literacy skill(s) do I want my students to develop in
this lesson? For edTPA consider this: Which academic language demands am I targeting? Choose
one, including language functions, vocabulary, syntax, or discourse that is central to this learning
segment. How is this activity using the specific language demand?
Students will be able to discuss parts of a plant and the method of planting (the tools used for
planting & procedures of planting)Using inquiry questions like: What does a plant need to grow?
(sunlight and water)

Procedures (step by step) Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get children’s attention, or to
introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process in getting them interested and
engaged.
Children will participate in the activity as a small group (four to five children) with teacher
scaffolding. This activity involves taking home their very own plant! Teacher lets the students
know they have contributed to the environment by growing a plant.
Instruction/Mini Lesson(Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will make up this
learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine wherein you model (I try); and ask for
active involvement (we try) during a whole group session.
1. Having previously read “Seed, Seed, Seeds” we will discussed how to plant a seed.
2. Teacher will ask students to recall the steps in planting the seeds and ask them to
demonstrate with their bodies these procedures.
3. Teacher will demonstrate how to plant the seeds first and then assist students if they
need while they also begin planting it on their own. Fill the cup one third full and then
poke a hole for the seed to rest. Then cover the seed with more soil and then water.
Independent Practice(small group activity, working with partners, or independently)
4. Teacher set out materials to prepare for planting. Soil is pouring in the tin foil pan so
students can scoop soil easily and place it in a cup.

3

5. Teacher will ask students to explain the steps and ask what do you do first? What do
plants need to grow?
6. Students tell teacher the name of the process and finish planting.
7. Students will place their plants in the sunlight on the window sill.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
8. Teacher will ask students to share the steps to planting the seeds and verbally discuss
about the different parts of the plants when it grows.
