BSMMU PROJECT

METHOD OF STATEMENT FOR PLACING WATER STOPPER IN CONSTRUCTION JOINT

1.0 INTRODUTION
Water stopper plays a vital role in waterproofing a concrete structure. A water stopper is an element
of a concrete structure, intended to prevent the passages of fluids (such as water) when embedded
in and running continuously through concrete joints. Thus, water stopper are designed as a fluid-
tight diaphragm embedded in or running along the joints to solve these problems. There is a wide
variety of different water stopper for concrete joints which are available in the market, each with
different strengths and weaknesses, which makes them appropriate for certain applications.

There are mainly PVC water stop, EVA water stop and Elastomer water stop, Ω type inserted rubber
sealing, tunnel segment gasket, etc. Different sizes and thicknesses of water stops will be applied to
different building hydraulic environments. Stainless steel water stop also have a wide range of
applications in abroad.

PVC water stopper are being used in BSMMU Project. PVC water stopper with high tensile strength
and elasticity are designed for construction, expansion even capping joints to prevent any seepage
of liquids.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

2.1 To outline the method statement for placing water stopper in construction joints.

3.0 SCOPE
3.1 This method of statement applies to all activities associated with the application of water
stopper in construction joints.

4.0 PURPOSE
4.1 This method of statement describes the procedure and inspection instructions to be
followed during application of rectification of water stopper in construction joints. This has
to be ensured that all activities are in full compliance with requirements as per
manufacturer’s standards.

5.0 SOURCES
5.1 PVC Water stopper is available in our local market. Prior approval will be taken from
respective authorities/consultant to use at site.

6.0 WORK SEQUENCE

6.1 The water stopper is cleaned. If it is dirty or greasy, it will not seal out water. Dirt and
splattered concrete is cleaned from the ribs and corrugations prior to placing concrete in
each side of the joint.
6.2 The water stopper is positioned correctly. The water stopper is located accurately and
possibly braced or lashed firmly to prevent movement during placing of concrete.
6.3 The centre bulb or loop that accommodates joint movement is placed directly at the joint
otherwise its value will be lost.
6.4 Concrete is carefully consolidated. This is very important as the efficiency depends on good
compaction of the concrete.
6.5 The water stopper is embedded in concrete of sufficient quality to hold it in place when
movement occurs at the joint.

7.0 MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIAL

7.1 Brush
7.2 Hammer
7.3 Chisel
7.4 Electrical Breaker
7.5 Plain Water
7.6 Trowel
7.7 Adhesive (PVC surface)

8.0 JOINT OF WATER STOPPER

8.1 We prefer lap joint with adhesive. Heat joint is also possible with blade heater or welding.
For lap joint we have to clear the joint surface of water stopper and then we have to make
the water stopper surface plane at one side with grinding. Lap Length of water stopper will
be 100mm. PVC surface fastening glue will be used at joint.
9.0 LABOUR INVOLVED

9.1 Supervisor : 1 person

10.0 SAFETY

10.1 All relevant personnel shall be made familiar to this method of statement.
10.2 All related personnel must be wearing necessary PPEs.
10.3 All necessary precautions must be taken for working with high places and necessary
scaffoldings.
