During a 24 hour time period , the inflow to a 500 acre vertical walled reservoir was 100
cfs. During the same interval, evaporation was 1 in. Was there a rise or fall in surface water
elevation ? how much was it ? Give the answer in inches and centimeters.
Given :
Time (t) = 24 h
Area (A) = 500 acre
Flowrate (Q) = 100 cfs or ft3/s
Evaporation (E) = 1 in.

Ask : Was there a rise or fall in surface water elevation ? how much was it ?

Answer :
1st step :
To find the depth, we should find the water volume in reservoir
Q = V/t
V= Q x t
V= 100 ft3/s x 24 h x 3600 s/h = 8640000 ft3
2nd step :
Find the depth from area given and volume
Area x height = volume
Height = volume / area

From teori given in ebook , acre-foot equivalent to volume of water 1 ft deep over 1 acre of
land ( 43560 ft2 ) . Therefore , before calculate the height , we convert first the area

Area = 500 acre x 43560 ft2/acre = 21780000 ft2

Calculate height to get what the increase in depth would be if there is no evaporation.:

Height = 8640000 ft3/ 21780000 ft2 = 0.39 ft

3rd Step :
subtract the evaporation 1 in from this height to get net change , assume if the result positif
the elevation will rise , in contrast if the result is negative.

Net change : 0.39 ft x 12 in/ft = 4.7 in or 119 cm → potential rise (+)

Actual rise : 4.7 in – 1 in = 3.7 in or 94 cm
6. A flow of 10 cfs enters a 1-mi2 vertical walled reservoir. Find the time required to raise the
reservoir level by 6 in.

Given : area = 1-mi2 = 2.6 x 106 m2; P = 6 in = 0.15 m; R = 10 cfs = 0.28 m3/s
Answer :

V = 0.15 m x 2.6 x 106 m2 = 390000 m3

m3
t = 390000
0.28 m3 /s = 1392857.143 s = 387 h
Julio
Q = 10 cfs
1 mi2 = 27878400 ft2
Raised by 6 in = 0.5 ft
0.5 ft x 27878400 ft2 = 13939200 ft3
How long will it take?

7. A drainage basin has an areaof 4 571 mi2. If the average annual runoff is 5102 cfs and
the average rainfall is 42.5 in. ,estimate the evaportranspiration losses for the area in
1 year. how reliable do you think this estimate is?

GIven: Area = 4 571 mi2 ; Runoff (R) = 5102 cfs ; P = 42.5 in (Assume per year)
Asked: evaportranspiration losses

Assumption : becasue the area is large so S = 0 and G = 0

Answer:
ET = P-R
Area = 4,571 mi2 = 1.27 × 1011 f t2
f t2 1
R= sec × (area) f t2
× sec in
yr × f t
f t2 1 (86400)(365) sec 12 in
R = 5102 sec × 1.27 ×1011 f t2 × yr × ft = 15.2 in /year

E T = 42.5 in/year − 15.2 in/year = 27.3 in/year

It is not the most accurate because a lot of assumptions are made.

8. Given:
Storage reach: 16.0 acre-feet
Average rate of inflow: 700 cfs
Average rate of outflow: 650 cfs
Question:
Storage (acre-feet) in one hour
Answer:
Volume in storage: (inflow-outflow)
: (700 cfs - 650 cf)
: 50 cfs
in one hour : 50 cfs*3600 s = 180,000 cubic feet
in acre-feet : 180,000 cubic feet = 4.13 acre-feet (converter)

9. Given: Rain falls at an average intensity of 0.4 in/hr over a 600 acre area for 3 days.
Questions:
(a) Determine the average rate of rainfall in cubic feet per second (Qavg in CFS)
(b) Determine the 3-days volume of rainfall in acre-feet (V of 3 days)
(c) Determine the 3 days volume of rainfall in inches of equivalent depth over the 600
acre area (V of 3 days of equiv. depth with 600 acre area)
Answers:
(a) Average rate of rainfall

(b) Volume of rainfall in 3 days

(c) Volume of rainfall in 3 days, depth?

11. One and one-half inches of runoff are equivalent to how many acre-feet if the drainage
area is 25 mi2 ? (Note: 1 acre = 43,560 f t2 .)
Answer:
Given : length of runoff = 1.5 in
drainage area = 25 mi2
Asked : how many acre-feet (volume)?
Solution :
2
1.5in x 25 mi2 x
1f t
12 in x ( 5280 f t
mi ) x 1ac
43,560 f t2
= 2000 ac.ft

12. Answer:
Given:
0,5 in/day is equivalent to…
500 acres

Asked:
(rate) (area) = ….. f t3 /s ?

Solution:
(rate) (area) =....in/d.ac

= 250 in/d.ac

now, we may convert the unit become f t3 /s

(rate) (area) = ….. f t3 /s
250 in/d.ac = …. f t3 /s ?
250 in/d.ac

1.12) One half inch of rain per day is equivalents to an average rate of how many cubic feet per
second if the area is 500 acres? How many meters per second?
Given: Area = 500 acres
Depth = 0.5 in/d
Time = 1 day = 24 h = 86,400 s
1 ft3 = 0.3048 m
Question: Q?
Answer:

= 10.5 ft3/s
= 10.5 ft3/s x (0.3048 m)3/ft3
= 0.297 m3
