ERGOT ALKAALOIDS:

 Ergonovine maleate or ergometrine maleate occurs as a white of faintly yellow

odourless microcrystalline powder
 It is affected by light and is readily soluble in water but less soluble in alcohol.
 The alkaloid was discovered almost 1953 by 5 independent research groups
Use and Dose:
Ergonovine maleate is an oxytocic and produces much faster stimulation of the uterine
muscles.
The usual dose is orally, 200 to 400 ug, 2 to 4 times a day intramuscularly or intravenously.

METHYLERGONOVINE MALEATE:
 Is a semisynthetic homolog of ergonovine prepared from lysergic acid and 2 amino
butanol.
 It occurs as a white to pinkish tan, microcrystalline powder.
Use and dose:
The usual dose is same as that of ergonovine.

ERGOTAMINE TARTRATE:
 Occurs as a colourless crystal or white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water or
in alcohol.
 Ergotamine possess oxytocic properties.
 It is characterized ass a specific analgesic properties in treatment of migraine .
 Ergotamine reduces extracranial blood flow and decreses the amplitude of pulsations
in the cranial arteries that have been associated with migraine.
 It may inhibit receptor uptake of nor epinephrine at sympathetic nerve endings.
Increasing the vasoconstrictive action.
 Dose:
 The usual dose is 2 mg ever 30 min if necessary, to a total of 6 mg per 24 hour. Do not
exceed 10 mg per week.
