B. ESSAY [LONGER ANSWER]

1. What is the main reason that triggers Jack to write English Book?
When he wrote interchange series that is a request of Cambridge University Press
because they were looking to expand into the American English market. Cambridge
University is a British University, their books are traditionally in British English for
the European market and then they opened a branch in New York. So they needed to
have a course book series in American English for those parts of the world that want to
study American English like Korea so they asked him to write series. Also he
speacialized in English language teaching, did his PhD in Canada and then he worked
in Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, so he had a fairly active involvement in language
teaching, training teachers, and also writing books for teachers as well as for students
so that was a natural extension of his interest.
2. In what way is that the role of English, French, and Chinese different in terms of
becoming international language?
French was commonly used as a sort of language of diplomacy in the 19th century but
English established itself for many reasons. One of the course is the legacy of British
colonialism. All of those countries that used to be in part of the British common wealth
such as like India and Singapore all inherited English and after the war as the American
influence spread it, became the language of the American trade, commerce and industry
worldwide. In the last few years it becomes the world's second language. English it's a
common language for young people to use in Europe. Meanwhile most of the speakers
of Chinese are in China and most of the speakers of English all around the world.
People learn Chinese because they want to do business in China not because they want
to travel in Europe or anything else. So Chinese is an important language for those who
want to go to China and have special interest in Chinese culture.
3. What are the difficult aspects faced by Jack as he writes the English book?
He has to try to think of the subject matter from the point of the learners like what's
going to be difficult for them, how he can structure it, how can he build in activities
and topics and things that are going to make it learning more fun. He tried to put into
his own books the things he'd like to see in books when he studied. He wanted to make
his books interesting and fun. Also looked beautifully illustrated and appealing.
4. In the seminar where he became speaker, what was the content that he talked about?
He talked about what is the nature of expertise in language teaching, how do we become
a better English teacher, what are the different things that teachers need to know and
how to be a successful teacher.
5. After seeing this video, what sorts of things that you learn as a future English teacher?
As teachers it's important to make the learning process fun, engaging, and interesting
for students. And I think it's not enough if we only good in English, we need to learn
any other languages.
