Argumentative Artifact

My argumentative artifact was completed during my AP English class in 11th grade. We had to

analyze a prompt that was given to us which was about whether or not people should donate to

the ones who are in need. We either had to agree, disagree, or stay neutral with the prompt given.

We then had to use three reasons to defend our position using sources like history, readings, and

real-life examples. After arguing our point, we also had to identify counterarguments and refute

the claims to convince them why our side was more persuasive.

This assignment fits in the category of argumentation because we had to persuade the

audience and the readers and convince them to believe our position and our point of view on the

topic. For example, the prompt I got was about whether people should donate to the ones who

are in need. I agreed with the author’s claim and my three reasons were that people should

donate to the ones who are in need because many people in this world need that special support

and that type of help, many people just waste their money on unnecessary things when many

people in the world are suffering, and nobody in this world should suffer and everybody should

help each other out. My counterclaim was, some people may say that they don’t have to donate

their money because they worked for the money they now have, but however, we need to keep in

mind that helping out people is a great thing and many good positive things will come your way.

On the other hand, donating to people who are in need makes you feel good about yourself and

also when you donate you can impact people’s life in a positive way.

In this assignment, I was met the SLOS critical thinker and effective communicator. I was a

critical thinker by finding specific evidence that will help me argue my point and trying to

convince another person with a different point why my point is better to believe. I was also an

effective communicator by effectively conveying my idea in the essay. To be a critical thinker in

this task, I needed to find 3 specific reasons and specifics to argue my point on whether people

should donate to the ones who are in need. I also had to identify counterclaim and created a

rebuttal to persuade the reader why my point is better to believe. I tried convincing the reader or

audience by using real life examples on why it is important and why people should donate to the

ones who are in need. As an Effective Communicator, I was asserting my claim in a respectful

way. I was not insisting the reader to believe my point is the correct one. I was acknowledging

that the reader and audience will not always agree with my point. I needed to prove why my

claim is better to believe by having strong communication skills in my essay.

This assignment helped me improve on my SLOS because for example, to be a good critical

thinker in this task, I had to be able to gather the information needed to be able persuade the

audience and readers why my claim is better to believe. To be a good effective communicator, I

have to be able to respectfully claim my point on this task without being rude towards the

audience and readers and without forcing them to believe my claim. Also, I needed to understand

their point of view if they do not agree with mine.

This assignment helped me improve on my writing skills. Having good writing skills

helps the reader and audience have a clear idea of what I am trying to say in my essay. I still

have to improve on elaborating more, for example, when I am talking about something, I need to
give more examples and go more in depth into what I am trying to say or claim or what I was

referring to. Having good writing skills can help me in the future by communicating my ideas

more effectively through words. For example, when writing essays, emails, letters, reports.

In this assignment i received a 88/100.
