Four years ago, Gov. Martin O’Malley and Lt. Gov.
Anthony Brown set a goal – 7 percent of all state contracts
were to be awarded to African American-owned businesses.
A recent contract worth $450 million has come across the
table and it’s asserted that no piece of the project is set to go
to Black-owned firms – creating a furor within the minority
business community.
Arnold M. Jolivet, president and founder of the Maryland
Minority Contractors Association, is prepared to take the
fight to the federal level if the 7 percent goal isn’t met on this
project.

As of November 2008, Lt. Gov. Brown
is the highest-ranking elected official in the
nation to have served a tour of duty in Iraq, as
part of his 25 years in the United States Army.
He’s currently a colonel in the United States
Army Reserve.

Maryland’s Democrats
prevailed.
An estimated 60 percent

election from being busy for
him. Baker spent the day

When all was said and
done, unlike some other
states, Maryland voters chose
to re-elect many incumbent
Democrats and Baker said
a lot of that had to do with
Prince George’s County
residents’ turnout at the polls.
Rushern Baker, who sealed his step into the Prince
George’s county executive’s seat during the primary,
still had a busy election day that ended celebrating the
pivotal role Prince George’s County played in Gov. Martin
O’Malley’s victory.

Prince George’s Hospital Launches Domestic Violence Initiative

In an effort to provide better services
to victims of domestic violence in the
area, Prince George’s Hospital Center has
launched the “Maryland Domestic Violence
Health Care Screening and Response
Initiative.”
The initiative was announced by
Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown,
whose own family was victimized by the
scourge of domestic violence when his
cousin, Cathy Brown, was killed by her
abuser in 2008.
“By establishing this new domestic
violence program in Prince George’s
County, we will be able to better recognize
and care for victims of domestic violence,
prevent further incidences, and send a
message to our neighbors that violence and
abuse against women and children will not
be tolerated and will not go unnoticed in
Maryland,” Brown said in a statement.
This is the fifth hospital-based domestic
violence initiative statewide. The hospital
already offers a full range of services
including crisis counseling, forensic
examinations and law enforcement support,
free of charge to victims of sexual assaults.
Now the hospital will be able to offer
similar support, free of charge, to victims of
domestic violence.
“The Domestic Violence Program is
an extension of our Sexual Assault Center
at Prince George’s Hospital Center. By
combining these services, this will allow
us to have more resources to provide an
added measure of safety and protection
to the individuals of domestic violence
in the community we serve,” said Ken
Glover, president and CEO of Dimensions
Healthcare System, the company which
operates the hospital. “We want to make
sure access to the program is easy as
possible for someone in an abusive situation
to get the support and help they need.”
It’s more evidence that the county
and state are making domestic violence a
priority.
The county has expanded its Project Safe
Sunday program to partner with religious
groups to address the issue and two of its
brand new elected officials, state’s attorney-
elect Angela Alsobrooks and sheriff-elect
Melvin C. High, made domestic violence
priorities in their campaigns.
The state has also been proactive in the
effort. Gov. Martin O’Malley’s Family
Violence Council release a report earlier
this year on

the state needs to expand its efforts in state
hospitals.
With 53 people dying as a direct result
of domestic violence in Maryland last year
and 40 percent of domestic violence victims
not reporting it, the opportunity to expand
treatment and prevention options appealed
greatly to the governor.
“Together, thanks to the dedication
and collaboration of our victim advocates,
health care providers, and local and state
leaders, we now have greater resources to
support and care for our neighbors who
are victims of domestic violence,” said
O’Malley in a statement. “Protecting the
public’s safety is among our most solemn
obligations as public servants, and we will
continue to build upon our programs and
strengthen our partnerships to achieve our
goal of reducing violent crimes committed
against women and children by 25 percent
by 2012.”

“The contract was given to two contractors and the
contractors were allowed to set the goal and determine what
minority groups they were going to use,” Jolivet said. “The
contractor, of course, is accustomed to using firms that they
want to use and didn’t use any African-American firms.”
Motorola is set to take on the bulk of the contract with 13
percent of it to be used on minority sub-contractors. Those
sub-contractors are Asian-American owned businesses.
Whether or not Jolivet can win this is questionable. There’s
no hard rule that mandates the state has to grant 7 percent of
all contracts Black-owned firms. However, the state has yet to
meet the 7 percent goal since O’Malley and Brown introduced
it. It was 4.3 percent in 2006, 3.6 percent in 2007, 4.1 percent
in 2008 and 5 percent in 2009.
Those numbers fall short, but people in the governor’s
office maintain that progress is being made in efforts to
provide equal opportunities for minority-owned businesses in
Maryland. The governor states that African American-owned
firms saw a 39 percent increase in awards from 2008 to 2009
to total over $371 million. They say that sum and other moves
the office has made show the governor’s office is serious.
“Creating connections that expand opportunity for
minority and women-owned firms has been a core priority
for the O’Malley-Brown Administration,” O’Malley said in a
statement. “We recently launched a new initiative – Minority
Business Enterprise (MBE) University, designed to connect
small and minority businesses with State and private sector
contracting opportunities.”
Brown, who has been in charge of preparing Maryland
for the influx of jobs as a result of the Base Realignment and
Closure plan, went even further into the efforts the state has
been making into creating opportunities for minority owned
businesses.
“During 2009, in collaboration with members of the
Maryland Congressional Delegation, we held the first ever
BRAC Minority Business Enterprise Conference to inform
small and minority firms of procurement opportunities with the
U.S. Department of Defense,” Brown said in a statement. “In
addition, the Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs (GOMA)
and the BRAC Small and Minority Business Advisory Board
have been instrumental in expanding the pool of federal
contracting opportunities for small and minority firms.”
There will be a state department of public works meeting
on Nov. 3 to determine whether this contract will be approved.
That meeting may be contentious as Jolivet says he and his
colleagues will show up to Annapolis in full force.
“We’re bringing a bus load of people to Annapolis to appear
before the board to convince them that they should do the right
thing and comply with the African-American goal utilization
requirement and have at least 7 percent of that contract go to
African- American firms,” he said.

Q: What is the impact of deployment on families and
communities?
A: It’s immeasurable. It takes a significant toll on the
soldier and their loved ones, specifically children and spouses.
It has a tremendous impact on families, and maybe more on
the families than the soldier. We sometimes lose sight of the
impact of service on the family. There is no other job that can
call you at three in the morning and you have to report to the
center in an hour. At the same time families can move to state
to state and/or country to country. That kind of impact has a
tremendous toll on the family, especially when dealing with the
education of children.
Q: How have the services for veterans evolved since the
Korean Conflict?
A: Over the years with an aging veteran population, the
country has had to provide health services and long-term care
services for the Vietnam War veterans. The greatest challenge
for U.S. Veteran Affairs, particularly in the state of Maryland,
is having medical and mental health centers in areas other than
within rural communities. Veterans have to drive a number of
miles to get the services they need so the challenge is meeting
the health needs of rural veteran communities.
Q: What are some of the concrete ways returning
Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, a United States Army Veteran, is very active in the community. He is shown participating in
Earth Day activities with students from Dickey Hill Elementary School.
veterans positively impact the community where they live?
A: Veterans are grounded people who have tremendous
patriotism and family values. They understand the importance
of community. They are reliable and have a strong work ethic,
they’re clean and a good labor resource. They tend to be very
active in their communities and to volunteer with various
organizations. However, there are a number of veterans who
are homeless, unemployed and/or going through post traumatic
stress disorder. This is what I was saying before about the
unique impact on the home and families – many need that
special attention and care we owe to the men and women that
volunteered to serve our country.
Q: What things can the public do to better appreciate its
veterans?
A: The best thing to do is thank a veteran. The minute you
hear that someone has served in the military, thank them for
service to our country and ask them how they are doing. Be
ready to listen.
As a community we should support them and help them by
addressing more of their needs. What we do in the O’Malley/
Brown administration is provide opportunities for veteran
families by having preferences in hiring, business entrepreneur
opportunities, providing scholarships, no interest loan programs
and set asides in state government contracts for veterans.
Q: What is the significance of Veteran’s Day to you?
A: Veteran’s Day is one day out of 365 days in a year that
we should be commemorating the services and sacrifices of
those who gave their lives to protect this country. If [we] ...
salute the men and women who have done what everybody
among us is not able to do, this day becomes a joyous
celebration.

“I’m calling to let everyone know
that Governor O’Malley and President
Obama have been successful,” the
woman’s voice on the call said. “Our
goals have been met. The polls were
correct and we took it back. We’re
ok. Relax, everything is fine. The only
thing left is to watch on TV tonight.
Congratulations and thank you.”
Baker, in turn, sent out a press
release denouncing the call as “un-
American.”
“I am shocked by the news of a
robocall targeting residents of Prince
George’s County intended to dissuade
voting earlier this evening,” Baker said
in a statement. “This isn’t dirty politics,
it’s un-American. I hope those behind
this call are investigated and exposed
for their attempt to suppress everyone’s
right to cast a ballot.”
Despite the call, Baker was in
attendance at O’Malley/Brown and
Mikulski’s victory celebration at the
American Visionary Art Museum
overlooking the Inner Harbor in
Baltimore.
Before Brown’s victory speech,
Baker took the stage flanked by many
O’Malley-Brown supporters including
Gansler and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie
Rawlings-Blake.
Now that election and celebratory
festivities are out of the way, Baker will
go back to working with his transition
team. He will have many new faces to
work with, but is excited about getting
started. “I look forward to working with
all these talented local, state and federal
officials to progress Prince George’s

Magazine. She celebrated
O’Malley’s win at his election
night party.
Others praised Democratic
support of minority businesses
and social policies for African

expressed dissatisfaction with
the overall political climate.

Legislative Black Caucus,
is defined as an American
political organization
composed of African
Americans elected to the
Maryland General Assembly.
The organization was
incorporated in 1970 and
consists of a membership
that’s grown from 17 to 44.
It’s considered as one of the
largest state legislative Black
caucuses in the country.
The purpose and role of
the caucus is to draft and
sponsor legislation, and
address constituent needs
by examining all bills that
affect the Black populace.
According to the caucus, the
overall objectives are to:
* act as a legislative
body on behalf of the Black
community;
* provide leadership in
developing, advocating and
implementing programs
and policies that serve the
best interest of the Black
community;

but timeless principles still
remain. Racism continues
to be a motionless theme
in many areas across
the globe and in several
factors of life, including
the workplace. African-
American entrepreneurs
Randal Pinkett and Jeffrey
Robinson understand a few of
the issues facing their race—
they’ve both encountered
and countered prejudice. But
rather then retreat, the duo
rebelled, recently releasing
their joint manuscript, Black
Faces in White Places: 10
Game-Changing Strategies
to Achieve Success and
Find Greatness to provide a
roadmap to Blacks everywhere
on how to achieve and survive
the suit-and-tie world.
Released on Oct. 28,
the book outlines 10 simple
strategies designed to ready
the Black mind for the
working world: establish a
strong identity and purpose;
obtain broad exposure;
demonstrate excellence;
build diverse and solid
relationships; seek the
wisdom of others; find
strength in numbers; think and
act “intrapreneurially;” think
and act entrepreneurially;
synergize and reach scale and
give back generously.
Attempting to crack the
proverbial “glass ceiling” that
routinely awaits most Blacks
in their careers, Pinkett and
Robinson draw from personal
experiences, examine the
inner workings of blue-collar
and white-collar America
and provide interviews with
25 of the most notable Black
leaders in government, the
private sector and academia.
“It comes out of our
experiences of usually being
the one or one of the few
amongst all the white faces in
corporations, universities or
classrooms,” says Robinson,
an author, award-winning
business scholar and assistant
director of the Center for
Urban Entrepreneurship &
Economic Development at
Rutgers Business School.
“We wrote it to help people
go through the same kind of
situations that we have where
it often seems that the rules
are different for us as African
Americans.”
Sparked by Pinkett, the
2005 winner of business
magnate Donald Trump’s
popular TV show, “The
Apprentice,” the idea for the
book was initially hatched in
2004 but withstood a variety
of rejections and revisions
before its final release.
Ironically, Pinkett’s notion
arrived before he became
the first Black victor of the
hit TV series, which drew
controversy after Trump
requested that the Rutgers
grad share his victory with
a White woman. Pinkett
declined and later served as
an executive with Trump
Entertainment Resorts in
Atlantic City, N.J. Currently
the CEO of BCT Partners, a
New Jersey-based information
technology and management
consulting firm, Pinkett,
in his book, identifies the
racial hurdles that can often
stagnate the careers of African
Americans.
“I think there are
things that we can do to be
proactive,” Pinkett said. “The
era that we live in, in the
21st century, requires a new
generation of strategies. [Old]
strategies may have worked
30 to 40 years ago [but] it’s
just a different landscape
[now]. We live in a global
society; we no longer face
interacting under a glass

Election 2010: Not Sure It Changes Anything
Well the results are in,
and Election 2010 has come
to a close. I find it hard
to imagine anyone more
excited about that than I.
Then again, if what I heard
during my travels on Election
Day is true, many people
were more interested in this
job interview process being
over, than they were in the
outcome. It seemed I wasn’t
the only person election
weary.
Talibah But does it mean anything

up six seats in the Senate and
about 63 in the House of Representatives? In procedural terms,
it means Democrats have a smaller majority in the Senate, but
since they lacked the consistent 60 votes needed to halt debate
before this election, I’m not sure how much this changes things

new majority leader and that the third man from the presidency,
if the president and vice president are unable to serve, is a
Republican.
How will it impact the pace and work of government? I’m
not convinced it will, in any appreciable way, change much of

Every year, a grateful nation honors and recognizes the
more than 23.4 million living veterans on Veterans Day.  On
Nov. 11, we pay tribute to our nation’s veterans who have
sacrificed by serving in the armed forces to protect our
freedom and democracy. Throughout the Veterans Affairs (VA)
Maryland Health Care System, we recognize and treasure all
who have served on the far-flung fields of combat or in the
ever-watchful duties of homeland defense.
While our foremost thoughts are with those in distant war
zones today, Veterans Day is an opportunity for Americans
to pay their respects to all who answered the nation’s call
to military service. Participation in Veterans Day can be
as simple as placing the American flag on your porch or
reminding youngsters about friends and relatives who served
in the military. This Veterans Day, I encourage all Marylanders
to do more to remember and honor those heroes who have
served our country.  If you know a veteran, consider saying
“thank you” for his or her service.  Such a simple gesture can
make a difference for someone who is struggling to make
the transition from a military to a civilian life.  If you know
a veteran who is not taking advantage of their VA health care
benefits or who is struggling with a physical or emotional
problem, reassure them that help is only a phone call away.  Black Americans, themselves, who keep failing Black children
It is surprising how many veterans are not aware of their
eligibility for VA health care or how the VA can assist them
with their physical and emotional needs.  Tell a veteran who is
not enrolled for VA health care that they can get assistance by

Eligibility & Enrollment Center at 1-800-463-6295, ext. 7324.  Black children in these times.
This Veterans Day, I encourage all Marylanders to
remember and honor the heroes who have served the colors of
our country.  For assistance in planning Veterans Day activities

includes a variety of resources, including a teacher’s guide, a

There were reports that voters leaving the polls said they
felt “worse off” now than two years ago, and I would have
to agree with that. But the truth is, two years ago, we felt
“worse off” than the four and eight years before that. Since it
is unrealistic to think you will repair eight years of continual
economic decline in two years – especially in circumstances
where non-conventional approaches to resolving problems are
minimized or destroyed by a significant bloc of Congress – I
don’t see much hope for change or believe that I will, in two
more years, feel any better about the economy.
As an aside, I find it amazing we added more obstructions
to a process that was already dysfunctional. Our capacity, in
my never again to be humble opinion, for acting outside our
own best interest is amazing.
As I looked at the news reports and the voting maps
with the blue and red blotches, hoping for insight into what
“message the voters were sending,” I decided, despite all
the other pundit and analysts’ conclusions, there was no
collective message. Sixty-three House seats tilt the scale in
the other direction, but that’s not a message—at least not at a
national level. I think that trying to grab a national mandate
from the fact that 63 pockets of people across the nation felt
someone else could better represent them in Congress, is like
bad sampling in a poll. You can believe it says something all
you like, but you never really know what because you aren’t
looking at the right data.
The NAACP leaders have made it their mission to paint these
objective and decidedly race-neutral positions into “White-
supremacist beliefs.” The difficulty, of course, is that there
has never been a sign on the tea party door saying “Whites
only.”  There is a difference between a blocked door and a
door through which one refuses to enter. Woe to any persons
who adopt as a measure of ethnic authenticity the belief that
limited government, fiscal restraint on the part of the federal
government, and free-market capitalism as antithetical to their
ultimate success, and who further come to believe that those
principles are, in fact, the tools of their oppressor.

Blacks and the Education Debate
Black Americans are quick to allege that it’s unfair racism
against Black educators and administrators from Whites,
regarding the lack of available funds in order to help properly
educate, mostly poorer class Blacks/Negro kids in secondary
schools and colleges, where such Blacks tend to dominate in
numbers.
This is not true and it’s not always limited money, nor true
that it’s always the fault of Whites who are failing Black kids
in the educational institutions throughout. The truth is that it’s
and young adults across America.
At the root of the problem is that so many Blacks have
less constructive values and now, education (that is, formal
education within the school systems) is no longer a priority nor
important to Blacks in general, and it’s badly affecting their

are not really interested in helping neither fellow Blacks nor

Congress and the new Republican leadership in the House will
realize how quickly the wind shifts and that if people don’t start
to feel better about their personal circumstances in two years,
they are going to vote again for different representatives.
We want a change we can feel in our daily lives, and soon.

rewrite their charter to reflect the true aims of their political
advocacy. 
For instance, NAAPPE would be very candid in its belief
that White racism is the primary cause of Black wretchedness. 
For this reason, NAPPE must have as its main occupation the
sniffing out of every last vestige of racism in America.  Like
hound dogs, NAAPPE members will sniff through the cultural
and political landscape and point when they pick up the scent
of racism, especially when that scent seems to emanate from
the ranks of all those who oppose the Democrat Party and its
national agenda, or who oppose those political groups allied
with the Democrat Party. 
Unlike NAAPPE, the NAACP simply can’t have it both
ways. The organization can’t profess that it is the last word
on civil rights and at the same time be an arm of ANY
political party. Its moniker can’t announce that it is fighting
for racial advancement and at the same time the body remains
ambivalent about a policy that results in the death of more
Black people than heart disease, cancer, strokes, accidents,
diabetes, homicide, and chronic lower respiratory diseases
combined. The NAACP can’t claim the leadership of the
Black community and then stand idly by while members of
the Congressional Black Caucus garner favor (and campaign
donations) from the teachers unions, while selling out the
interests of Black schoolchildren in Washington D.C.   And it
can certainly no longer claim to be a civil rights organization
of other men.

and administrators what they ought to be doing for their Black
kids.
It is that kind of arrogance, reverse racism and over-
reaching demeanor within Blacks toward non-Blacks, which
results in little or nothing at all getting done to better the
dismal plight of Black kids in the schools—but, also within
other environments where such children have little chance of
success or survival.
There’s too many Black people with the evil spirit of
“Lucifer” within them who are “sitting upon high fences,”
shouting orders/commands to other people while these same
kind of Negroes refuse to take any orders/commands as well
refuse to do any of their own required work to help better their
own Black kids.
It’s really not about the lack of money—but Negroes who
are selfish, arrogant, and lazy….
Blacks also need to take responsibility and hold themselves
accountable for programming Black youths to readily embrace
the evil ways of the streets and to look down upon Blacks who
do value formal education and their Black school peers who
are trying to succeed in school.
The drug culture, lifestyles of crime, domestic and social
violence, sexual lewdness and exploits within interracial
relationships; [some] Blacks’ obsession with urban terrorism
and Blacks seeking to be glorified as “social terrors” within
every integrated environment where they are allowed among
Whites does not have to permeate/saturate Black American
neighborhoods and communities all across this nation. Blacks
do have the power to break “Lucifer’s” aura of hate and
destruction within themselves and their children—they have to
want to change and be better, though.
It’s high time for Blacks who do what’s right to “put their
own feet to the fire” and do what must be done…

Preparations for the annual Howard University
Homecoming celebration began months in advance
and the Howard University Homecoming Steering
Committee (HUHSC) hit the ground running with
this year’s events, collectively entitled “DYNASTY: An
Era of Excellence.” The homecoming extravaganza
took place Oct. 24-30, on the school’s northwest
Washington D.C. campus.
Since its very first homecoming celebration in

group as The National Harbor Chapter (NHC) in October
at the Westin National Harbor Hotel, National Harbor,
Md. Jack and Jill of America is an organization of
predominately African-American mothers who nurture
summer of 2007 representing 32 families with 60 children
who serve the Prince George’s County community.

Phylicia Rashad: ‘All Women Are
‘Colored Girls’’
Leading actress vents on latest film and feeling like a ‘stranger
in paradise’

She’s etched in our collective memory
as the consummate businesswoman – a
stunningly beautiful, multilingual lawyer
with a Brooklyn Heights brownstone and
perfectly coiffed hair to boot. Even more
so, Phylicia Rashad has come to embody
the ideal on-screen mother, whose tough
love endures 18 years after the Cosbys
became ‘80s TV nostalgia.
Standing last in a line of mostly
20-something journalists at the District’s
Lincoln Theatre Nov. 1, I mulled over
Rashad’s career-defining Huxtable
character; her Tony Award-winning
performance as dignified matriarch Lena
Younger and now, her role as Gilda, the
tenement sage in For Colored Girls.
Surely, no woman could be so
unflawed and utterly nurturing as the
characters she’d adopted, I thought. But
within seconds of our introduction in one
of the theater’s dimly lit upstairs nooks,
Rashad proved me wrong.
Dressed in a cherry-colored kimono
shirt and flowing black plants, the Texas-
born thespian looked stately and far
younger than her 62 years. She’d been
grilled by a posse of print, TV and radio
personalities for at least 45 minutes and
seemed relieved – if only for a passing
moment – when a PR rep said I was the
night’s final interview.
Smiling, but unnerved as I prepared
to chat with a woman who’d shaped my
rudimentary definition of poise, I greeted
Rashad. “Your hands are so cold!” she
said before reclining into her chair and
looking genuinely concerned.
Sheepishly, I replied, “My iron must
be low.”

At this moment, it became obvious
Rashad’s motherly decorum on stage
and film was an instinctive trait. “You’ve
got to get some floradix (an iron
supplement),” she said matter-of-factly in
her signature, soft-spoken voice. “It’s a
liquid…has a nice, pleasant taste.”
Our conversation flowed into
discussion of For Colored Girls, Tyler
Perry’s film adaptation of Ntozake
Shange’s landmark book and stage play,
and why the Madea star’s work spawns
heated debates about race and class. Her
response was a cautious and indirect one.
“Let me say this about Mr. Perry:
He has emerged as a filmmaker
without a mentor. Do you know how
difficult that is?” she asked and then
paused. Apparently her question wasn’t

She eventually continued, “He
learned not only filmmaking, but the
business of filmmaking by himself. What
he has done is phenomenal and when I
go to Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, this
actress, for the first time, stepped onto a
studio lot and didn’t feel like a stranger
in paradise.”
It’s hard to imagine the Emmy-
nominated Howard University alum
feeling out of place in any setting, as
she’s tackled Broadway, off-Broadway,
voiceovers and philanthropy in addition
to on-screen credits. But a laundry list
of accolades won’t make Rashad a
Hollywood snob anytime soon.
While she and fellow cast member
Whoopi Goldberg are (arguably) the
most accomplished For Colored Girls
stars, Rashad gushed while praising her
younger co-stars.
“Listen, those women, those young
women, they don’t need any advice from
me,” Rashad said with a pointed finger
and for the first time, a slight southern
drawl. “They are wonderful. This is what
was so beautiful about it. Each was so
accomplished in her own right; even the
ones whose names you may not have
heard before, like Tessa Thompson.”
With only a minute left for our
interview, I asked the Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority member what lasting message
she hoped Black women would glean
from the film, but she interjected before I
finished the question.
“All women are colored girls,
because color doesn’t have anything to
do with ethnicity or skin. It has to do
with outlook; it has to do with mood,
consciousness, response, energy, with all
of these things, you see. And the message
is simple. It’s the very end of the film, the
last words that are spoken.”

night, I stood corrected.

WORLDEAF Cinema
Festival’s filmmaker award
competition taking place

Nov. 4-7.
Seventeen films from seven different countries were
chosen to participate in the festival among a staggering 173
submissions. The films, which range from nine-minute shorts
to full length features, depict fictional and nonfictional tales
of the deaf experience. Deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing
filmmakers competed in one of five categories including
“Best Narrative,” “Best Documentary” and “Best Short,”
among others.
“The films chosen are true examples of what deaf cinema
has to offer,” Dr. Jane Norman, Chair and Director/Producer
of WDCF said in a statement. “We wanted to bring the deaf
experience to a mainstream audience while also showcasing
the talent of these filmmakers. Their stories tell and show
how powerful deaf cinema is and we hope that people come
and enjoy these extraordinary films.”
Director Kamau Buchanan, whose film Catch Santa
was nominated for “Best Short,” says as a youth, he always
admired deaf cinema, which sparked his interest to become a
filmmaker.
“We need more deaf filmmakers and I had the passion
and desire to become one,” Buchanan told the AFRO. “It’s
my hope that there will continue to be an increasing number
of deaf filmmakers so that our deaf community has films to
enjoy watching.”
The filmmakers’ work will be displayed during the
conference’s daily film screenings and winners will be
announced at a special awards ceremony on Nov. 6.
“Deaf cinema is important among other genres because
it shows the diversity of human spirit,” Buchanan said.
“Hearing audiences can connect to Deaf cinemas because
they are very visual and show the core of human spirit to
which any audience can relate.”

one of Hollywood’s most
sought after talents. Last
year, she played a lead role in
Dance Flick, a spoof of the
dance genre produced by the
Wayans Brothers.
On the UPN comedy
series “Half & Half,” she
starred as Dee Dee Thorne,
a privileged, honor-roll law
school graduate searching for
her identity. Still, Essence is
probably best known for her
role as Yvette Henderson in
the syndicated Disney series
“The Smart Guy” and for
her recurring role as Marnie
on “Sabrina, The Teenage
Witch.”
Atkins’ film career
includes the title role in the
independent film Nikita’s
Blues and she delivered
memorable performances in
Love Song, How High and
Deliver Us From Eva.
As a familiar face on four
TV series and with numerous
screen roles under her belt,
Essence is a versatile talent
whose star continues to rise.
Here, she talks about co-
starring opposite Terry Crews
in “Are We There Yet?,” the
hit sitcom airing on the TBS
Network.

new series for the quarter,
averaging 2.8 million viewers
and 1.5 million adults 18-
49.  It also scored as the No.1
show on television in prime

18-49 for the second quarter.

interested you in playing
Suzanne on “Are We There
Yet?”
Essence Atkins: Just
the desire to play a mom,
wanting to play someone
actually closer to who I am
and where I am in my life.
People are used to seeing
me play the single, hot girl,
which has been fun, but at
the same time, this role is
more akin to my natural
proclivities. [Laughs]
KW: I know you got
married a year ago.
Congratulations! You sound
like you might be planning to
have children soon.
EA: We’re in the
practicing phase. I keep
asking the coach to put me in
the game. So, we’ll see.
KW: Did your friends
think you were crazy for
marrying a man you met on
the Internet?
EA: Yeah, they did think I
was nuts. Everyone was like,
“Why do you need to meet
someone on Match.com?”
My response was, “I certainly
don’t need to meet more of

my whole life.” I needed to
change that whole paradigm.
So, I decided to meet some
corporate guys and see how
that worked. So, I went on
Match, but I didn’t put a
picture up, because I’m on
television, and I didn’t want
anybody contacting me for
the wrong reasons. So, I had
to do the hunting, as it were. I
didn’t anticipate meeting my
husband online, but there he
was. And it all worked out!
KW: Were you at all
intimidated by the fact that
“Are We There Yet?” had first
been a hit on the big screen
with fans, and any time
you step into that it’s a bit
overwhelming. But [Ice]
Cube has been great, and so
encouraging and supportive
not only playing my big
brother but as an executive
producer, at least when he’s
not completely intimidating
as the godfather of gangsta’
rap. [Laughs] But, no, he
gives us the freedom to do
what we need to do, and his
sanctioning has definitely
helped.
KW: And what new are
you bringing to the character,
Suzanne?
EA: It just gets deeper,
because the storyline is really
about the new family and
the new journey. Six months
into the marriage you get to
see her cope with all these
different agendas. Besides
the fact that she’s been a
single mom and raising these
two kids by herself, all of
a sudden it dawns on her
that she has to incorporate
someone else’s way of doing
things. And that’s the source
no one ever asks you, that you
wish someone would?
EA: Sure, where do I want
the seven-figure wire transfer
sent? That’s a good one that
nobody’s ever asked me.
[LOL] Seriously, I do want
to clear up that my husband
[Jaime Mendez] is not a dirty
old man. He’s only a year
older than me, despite the
grey hair. Let’s clarify that,
and that I’m not related to
Tia or Tamera [Mowry]. I
did play their real brother’s
[Tahj Mowry] sister on
“Smart Guy,” but there’s no
relation. What else? Yes, my
middle name is Uhura after
Lieutenant Uhura on Star
Trek. And I was probably
conceived in a roller skating
rink, but I don’t really want to
talk about that.
KW: And where did the
name Essence come from?
EA: My mother was
convinced she was having
a boy, so she only came up
with boys’ names. Thankfully,
my father came up with an
alternative, otherwise you’d

and two weeks for things to
fester. Think he’s going to
be amped to resign after the
year? Probably not.
Washington coach Mike
Shanahan just unknowingly
sabotaged the remainder of
this season and next season
by putting his ego ahead of
the team. The way he coached
Sunday’s game against the
Detroit Lions seemed like
he was trying to throw it.
He repeatedly watched the
middle of his offensive line
get ripped through like candy
wrappers on Halloween but
kept his best guard, Derrick
Dockery, on the sideline for
his own personal reasons. And
when you take a quarterback
who hasn’t played all year
and throw him in with 1:50
left and expect him to win
a game, you can’t tell me
you’re trying to win. Don’t
even try it.
“I felt with the time and
no timeouts, (Grossman) was
the best chance to win in that
scenario,” Shanahan told
reporters after the game, “just
knowing the terminology of
what we’ve done…how we
run it.”
Come on Shanahan,
really? The franchise-saving
signal caller that’s been
with the team since April
that’s gone through a full
offseason and seven games
of the regular season didn’t
give you your best chance to
win? If there’s a hidden beef
with McNabb then Shanahan
should just come out and
say it instead of spinning off
riddles and fairy tales. Just
like he could’ve came out and
voiced his personal opinions
about Albert Haynesworth,
Clinton Portis, Dockery and
Devin Thomas instead of
coating the issues with fluff
and football rhetoric.
McNabb may not know
Washington’s terminology but
he already understands the
language of being benched.
He knows it means his coach
doesn’t trust him and the
team doesn’t have a plan. He
also knows he has options
when the year’s up and he
doesn’t have to stand for the
insults. Shanahan always
casts an eerie resemblance of
George Bush to me and for
Halloween on Sunday, his
costume was on point. He had
the face, he had the mindless
excuses and he even had the
dumb decision-making down
to a “T.”
And all this time we
thought it was Haynesworth
who was putting himself
before the team.

‘It ain’t all bad’
While perusing the sports page in another
periodical, I spotted an article that sent me
on one of my mental road trips. The behavior
of athletes is a subject of great interest to
me, and any time I find something I think is
newsworthy, I try to throw my slant on the
subject.
Every one of us has fantasized over the
things we could accomplish with the kind of
bucks these millionaire athletes are making.
However, there seems to be a mixed bag
of personalities involved and a different
approach to appreciating the good fortunes
that have come their way.
There is a basket of bad apples with
different degrees of bad behavior. The mild
ones are guys like Randy Moss who is
talented, but doesn’t mind pulling out his
selfish streak when he thinks things aren’t
going the way he wants.
Terrell Owens has had more jobs than
Elizabeth Taylor had husbands. He will show
up, give a smiling press conference, play
world beating football for half a season and
then reveal his displeasure over the treatment
he is getting. He has ticked off so many
teams that he was a heartbeat from being out
of football. Hopefully, he got the message
that enough is enough.
Chad Ochocinco (Johnson), TO’s partner
in crime, was close to following the same
path until coach Marvin Lewis made it clear
that he would not be traded and the bench
may be a good place for him to get his head
together. Chad got the message.
Moving to the next step, we find Adam
‘Pac Man’ Jones who was creating whispers
that he may be the best cover corner since
Deion Sanders retired. Pac Man ran afoul
of the law and the league. After serving his
suspension and uttering a few “mea culpas,”
Pac Man was reinstated. It didn’t take long
for him to show that he couldn’t keep his
nose clean, and now he is sitting somewhere
wondering why he threw away all of that
money. Being injured isn’t the best way to
extend a career when all eyes are on you
waiting for you to fail.

Tank Johnson had the law interested in
him for weapons possession, and because he
was an integral part of the Super Bowl bound
Chicago Bears, a judge set his trial date for
after the Super Bowl. Tank was headed for
a break when a raid on his house discovered
that he had enough weapons to arm the
Illinois militia.
There are a few others who fit the mold of
wife beaters and substance abusers, and more
than a few bad apples in this barrel. But,
these bad actors are just the squeaky wheels
of the NFL, not the face of the organization.
On the other side of this coin are players
like Tony Romo of the Cowboys. Romo was
returning home after a game where he had to
take his body to the shop for a few repairs.
He passed an elderly couple stranded on the
side of the road with a flat tire. Tony cinched
up his bandages, hopped out of his car and
changed the tire.
Two of the most ferocious defensive
players of modern times are Reggie White
and Ray Lewis. Reggie seemed meek and
mild when faced, but when the whistle
blew he would tear your heart out. Ray, on
the other hand, seemed to stop just short of
