This research study elucidate the meaning origin of Autism

Spectrum Disorder, how it is manage and how the people around with

this kind of disorder treat them as individual.

Autism Spectrum Disorder, the name adopted in 2013, is a

developmental disorder characterized by persistent problems in social

communication and interaction, along with restricted and repetitive

patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. Autism has existed

through the ages, but the first ever clinical account of the disorder

was published by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. Dr. Manner, who developed

the first child psychiatric service at a U. S. hospital, described a group

of 11 children- eight boys and three girls who had autistic

disturbances of effective contact. Dr. Kanner based his report on

direct observation, and much of what the set down has stood the test

of time. He vividly depicted the essential features of autism, all of

which are echoed in current day diagnostic manuals. In Kanner’s

study, the rate of autism in males continue to be much higher than

the rate in females.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of

conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive

behaviors, speech and non verbal communication. According to the

Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59

children I the United States today.

Autism is just one syndrome that now falls under the heading of

autism spectrum disorders. Previous disorders that are now classified

under the umbrella diagnosis of ASD or a social communication

disorder include:

1. Autistic disorder- This is what most people think of when they

hear the word “autism”. It refers to problems with social interactions,

communications, and imaginative play in children younger than 3

years.

2. Asperger’s syndrome- these children don’t have a problem with

language, in fact thet tend to score in the average or above average

range on intelligence tests.

3. Pervasive developmental disorder or PDD-also known as

atypical autism- This kind of catch all category for children who have

some autistic behaviors but who don’t fit into other categories.
4. Childhood disintegrative disorder- These children develop

nomally for at least two years and then lose some or most of their

communication and social skills.

What cause of Autism?

Because autism runs in families, most researchers think that

certain combinations of genes may predispose a child to autism. But

there are risk factors that increase the chance of having a child with

autism. When a pregnant woman is exposed to certain drugs or

chemicals, her child is more likely to be autistic. These risk factors

include the use of alcohol, maternal metabolic conditions such as

diabetes and obesity, and the use of antiseizure drugs using

pregnancy.

Although sometimes cited as a cause of autism, there is no evidence

that vaccinations cause autism. Exactly what autism happens isn’t

clear. Research suggests that it may arise from abnormalities in parts

of the brain that interpret sensory input and process language.

What are the symptoms of Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can look different in different

people. It’s a developmental disability that affects the way people

communicate, behave, or interact with others. There’s no single cause

for it, and symptoms can be very mild or very severe.

Some children who are on the spectrum start showing signs as

young as a few months old. Others seem to have normal development

for the first few months or years of their lives and then they start

showing symptoms. The autism spectrum is very wide. Some people

might have very noticeable issues, others might not. The common

thread is differences in social skills. Communication, and behavior

compared with people who aren’t on the spectrum.

Social Skills - A child with ASD has a hard time interacting with

others. Problems with social skills are some of the most common

signs. If your child is on the spectrum, he might show some social

symptoms by the time he’s 8 to 10 months old. These may include

any of the following:

 He can’t respond to his name by his first birthday.

 Playing, sharing, or talking with other people doesn’t interest him.

 He prefers to be alone, avoids or rejects physical contact.

Communication - about 40% of kids with autism spectrum disorders

don’t talk at all, and between 25% and 30% develop some language

skills during infancy but then lose them later. Most have some

problems with communication including these:

 Delayed speech and language skills.

 Flat, robotic speaking voice, o singsong voice.

Patterns of Behavior - Children with ASD also act in ways that seem

unusual or have interests that aren’t typical. Examples of this can

include:

 Repetitive behaviors like hand-flapping, rocking, jumping, or

twirling.

 Constant moving and hyper behavior.

 Fixations on certain activities or objects.

“Interview”
Last March 08, 2019, we interviewed one of the SPED

Teacher in Kapitbahayan Elementary School in Navotas City. She is

Ms. Stella Maris C. Quinto, 27 years old teacher in BEED- SPED

Teacher 1, she is 4 years in service. We asked that what if the child

with autism is attack by hypertension she said that they let the

students be hyper because once they stop the students, the students

will fly into the rage. Students with autism can be train depends on

what kind of autism the students have. The children with autism has a

high IQ and their social behavior is low.

We also interviewed one of the teacher in Kapitbahayan

Elementary School in Navotas City. She is Ms. Carmel A. Jitales. She is

a SPED Teacher and also a Mother of a Child with Autism. First she is

employee of a Office but after a years she thinks that she wants to

become a teacher. She studied Education and the main reason is

because of her son who has a autism to know how to handle a child

with autism. Her son diagnosed a child with autism when he was 4

years old. They have a own language that they only understand and

when they call their by their name they ignore it. They usually use

English language better than the Tagalog language. For them practice

makes perfect, they know everything what you say and they always

remember your promises, they will not stop reminding you until you
remember. He prefer music and art and he wants to do coloring and

poster paint. He is very organized person, he knows what his own

things he remember everything with his own. He’s not watching

cartoons like the other kids, he’s favorite channel in television is

national geographic, he is very observant when it comes to that.

When it come to his physical appearance he is very neat and clean

with his own. He likes pasta, pizza and cake, even the condiments in

the foods they also know what condiment they tasted. He has a

routine everyday like, he will cook their rice every 4 am in the

morning everyday, they know how to wash the clothes and iron them.

He is very repetitive in her own. When he was 7 years old he can

manage how to go to school alone. When he was a child he already

have a routine everyday, and he will do that until he got in the middle

age and to become a man he will never forget his routine everyday

that what a child with autism. All the child with autism is a good

looking and neat. He can attend the normal school and he can

communicate to other normal children he plays basketball actually he

like Stephen Curry. When they visited the mall he does not care about

how expensive the things when it comes to stephen curry he will buy

it. He knows what the original and not, he is friendly to others. He has

a normal girlfriend.
