ESA RN37 III Midterm Conference:

Inequality and uncertainty: current challenges for cities

Madrid, 27-29 June 2018

Instructions for Chairs

The conference program is attached, including presentation order and presenters. You will
be emailed a final agenda once we have it. Please confirm the title of the talks with each
speaker in your session.

1) Before your session

Please arrive 10 minutes before your session starts and check if a group of cards (for
flashing the presenters to tell them how much remaining time they have) is already in the
classroom. If not, ask at the registration desk where you will also collect the certificates for
the presenters that should be handed in after each session. Please ensure that all talks in
your session have been uploaded before your session begins and ensure they are running
properly.

2) Presentations – keep your session on schedule

Extremely important role that you will serve is to keep your session on schedule. No
presentation should be allowed to run past its time limit. Please check the agenda to see
how many presentations are planned for your session. Usually 4 presentations are planned
for one session – then you allow 15 minutes for each presentation. At the sessions with 3
presentations you can extend this time by 3-4 minutes. Use the cards (5, 3, 1 min. and “the
end”) for the time discipline.

3) Questions and discussion

The role of the moderator is to manage questions from audience. The moderator must
acknowledge participants with questions and:

1) ensure participants are allowed to ask questions in the order they put up their hands
2) facilitate questioning so that there is time for multiple individuals to ask questions or keep
questioning on track with the session topics
3) keep questioning to a designated time limit so that the session remains on schedule.

4) Propositions for planned publication

We kindly ask you to choose one presentation in your session (max 2 presentations when
you chair two sessions) the best in terms of scientific quality (important topic, innovative
and/or advanced conceptualisation and methodology, interesting results and discussion
etc.). We, the board, have discerned the possibility to publish the book inspired by the
midterm conference, focused on the issues of inequalities and uncertainty in cities; the
Springer would be interested in it, but we have to propose the idea of the book and the
content (about 15 articles). Your help in doing this will be invaluable.

Have a good session!
