Unit Title: 2D & 3D Geometrical Figures Name: Stephen Tran

Content Area: Geometry Grade Level: 7th & 8th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.G.C.9
Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GMD.A.2
Give an informal argument using Cavalieri's principle for the formulas for the volume of a sphere and other solid figures.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.MG.A.1
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Essential Question:
How are different geometrical figures similar to one another?
How can we show figures are similar?

Student Learning Objectives

Students will be able to...
1. Understand equivalent volumes between shapes (Participation of YouTube demonstration)
2. Provide convincing arguments and support their claims by through research (GeoGebra & Desmos)
3. Learn how to use technological resources to support claims (Constructing figures using dynamic geometry software)
4. Understand volume and its relationship with other three-dimensional figures (Same Base & Height)
5. Understand the formulas that are derived from three-dimensional figures (Each figure has a special formula that will hold true in all valid cases)

Unit Summary:

At first glance, geometrical shapes look incredibly different. As we dive into Geometry, students need to possess a strong understanding of 2D and 3D figures.
Each figure contains defining characteristics that set them apart from one another. If students do not fully understand key components of certain figures,
they can easily construct an incorrect figure. Providing students with a strong understanding of volume between different shapes will help them see their
relationships with one another. Three-Dimensional figures containing the base and height allows us to look into how these geometrical figures are similar.
This unit plan will encourage students to find similarities and support their claims with strong supporting evidence. At the end of the unit plan, students will
be able to accurately construct geometrical figures by including its defining characteristics. They will also gain proficiency in using technological resources
such as GeoGebra to enhance students' learning experience. With its many features, are provided with an accurate visual representation of
three-dimensional figures. The online program eliminates the difficulties of replicated these objects by hand. They will discover that an abundance of online
resources are available to help students improve their learning development and obtain high levels of academic success.
