PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 REINFORCEMENT

A. All reinforcing bars shall be Type 2 high yield deformed steel bars complying with British
Standard 4449, with a characteristic strength not less than 460 MPa.

B. Welded wire fabric shall conform to British Standard 4483 and shall be supplied in flat
sheets.

C. Whenever specified on the drawings, BOQ or Other Specification Sections, reinforcement

below finished grade shown on the drawings shall be epoxy coated to ASTM A775. This
includes reinforcement in piles, pile caps, tie beams, basement slabs, foundation walls,
footings, etc.

D. The Contractor shall demonstrate that a submitted material satisfies the required design and
performance criteria.

2.2 ACCESSORY MATERIALS

A. Supports for Reinforcement: Bolsters, chairs, spacers, and other devices for spacing,
supporting, and fastening reinforcing bars and welded wire fabric in place. Use wire bar
type supports complying with ACI specifications.

B. For slabs-on-grade, use supports with sand plates or horizontal runners where base
material will not support chair legs.

C. For exposed-to-view concrete surfaces, where legs of supports are in contact with forms,
provide supports with legs which are plastic protected or stainless steel protected.

D. Screwed couplers for mechanical splices of deformed high yield steel bars are to consist of
two seamless steel sleeves and interconnecting high tensile stud with plastic protection
caps for threaded section of sleeve, to comply with ACI 439 report “Mechanical Connections
of Reinforcing Bars”. And shall be used for bars bigger than 32mm dia and/or as requested
by Engineer.

2.3 FABRICATION

A. Reinforcing steel fabrication shall be performed in a pre-qualified fabrication shop, not at the
job site, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.

B. Fabricate concrete reinforcing in accordance with CRSI (DA4) - Manual of Standard

Practice.

C. Fabricate and handle epoxy-coated reinforcing in accordance with ASTM D 3963/D 3963M.

D. Welding of reinforcement is permitted only with the specific approval of Architect. Perform
welding in accordance with AWS D1.4.

E. Locate reinforcing splices not indicated on drawings at point of minimum stress.

Review locations of splices with Architect.

F. All bars are to be bent cold. Do not re-bend bars without approval. Tag bundles of
reinforcement with labels to BS 4466.

G. Reinforcement must not be roughly handled, dropped from a height, or subjected to shock
loading or mechanical damage.

H. At time of placing concrete, reinforcement to be clean and free of corrosive pitting, loose mill
scale, loose rust, ice, oil and other substances which may adversely affect the
reinforcement, concrete, or bond between the two.

I. Provide on site facilities for hand bending to deal with approved minor adjustments.

J. Grade 250 bars may be bent to radii not less than BS 4466, Table 3, Grade 460 bars must
not be bent or straightened without approval.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PLACEMENT

A. Place, support and secure reinforcement against displacement. Do not deviate from
required position.

B. Clean reinforcement of loose rust and mill scale, earth, and other materials which reduce or
destroy bond with concrete.

C. Do not displace or damage vapor barrier or membrane.

D. Accommodate placement of formed openings.

E. Maintain concrete cover around reinforcing, as indicated on the drawings.

F. Place reinforcement to obtain at least minimum cover for concrete protection. Arrange,
space, and securely tie bars and bar supports to hold reinforcement in position during
concrete placement operations. Set wire ties so ends are directed into concrete, not toward
exposed concrete surfaces.

G. Install welded wire fabric in long lengths as practicable. Lap adjoining pieces at least one full
mesh and lace splices with wire. Offset end laps in adjacent widths to prevent continuous
laps in either direction.

3.2 BENDING SCHEDULES

A. The contractor shall include for preparation of reinforcement bending schedules for both
high yield and mild steel bars.

B. The Engineer / Architect will provide typical reinforcement details for this purpose but the
Contractor is to provide any supplementary details for the purpose of preparing bending
schedules.

C. The bending schedules are to include all necessary spacer bars, chair bars, and similar
items for properly supporting the main and distribution reinforcement, in compliance with the
requirements of this specification and / or drawings.

D. The reinforcement shall be fixed in position to avoid displacement before and during
concreting. All intersections of reinforcement shall be securely tied by rust-proof binding
wire or any other method approved by the engineer / architect before concreting is
commenced. When wire is used all cuttings and loose ends are to be removed as the work
proceeds and tails bent away from concrete surfaces so as to prevent staining when
shuttering is stripped.

E. No welding will be allowed without the prior written approval of the engineer / architect.

F. The fixing of the reinforcing steel shall be checked immediately before concreting begins.
The reinforcement cages shall be maintained in position during concreting by use of

adequate plastic spacers, steel chairs and cradles , these shall be provided even if not
shown on the drawings.

G. During concreting operations care must be taken to avoid displacement of the reinforcement
by plant, operatives or wet concrete.

H. Particular attention shall be given to securing top reinforcement in beams and slabs and
special precautions must be taken in cantilevers to maintain the specified cover. Nylon or
other non-metal spacers and ties may be used provided they are of satisfactory design and
provided they will have no deleterious effect upon the concrete or its surface, subject to the
prior approval of the Engineer.

3.3 CONCRETE COVER

A. Minimum concrete cover shall be in accordance with the Standard Codes and Drawings,
whichever governs.

B. Before concreting check thoroughly that the specified cover dimensions have been
obtained.

C. Spacers to be of an approved type and be installed to give an exact steel cover.

D. Prevent damage to and disfigurement of forms, form linings and adjacent work.

E. Prevent rust staining of surfaces of concrete which will be exposed to view in the finished
work, caused by, e.g. rust stained formwork or unprotected projecting reinforcement.

F. Check the position of the reinforcement in the hardened concrete as soon as practicable
after casting using a magnetic induction digital display type cover meter in accordance with
manufacturer’s recommendations and BS 1881. Pay particular attention to columns,
beams, cantilevers, soffits of slabs and all faces which will be exposed to the weather in the
finished building.

G. Inform Engineer / Architect when such checking is to be carried out, confirm that it has been
carried out and that the results were satisfactory.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. The Contractor will employ an approved testing laboratory by the Engineer to perform tests
and to submit test reports.
