Interview analysis

Interview analysis we interviewed four people, asking them ten questions about horror genre.

1. What do you see in a conventional horror film?

The reason we asked Q1 was to find out whether the target audience have seen horror movies or
not, we would know this because they would have given example of things that are seen in horror
films. Most of the answer included things such as blood and weapons; these could be things which
we include in our final film.

2. Do you prefer male or female characters?

We asked Q2 to see if our target audience liked characters which are diverse and that are different
genders. Most of the answers that we got showed us that people aren’t too bothered however they
prefer watching films when there is more than 1 (same) gender the whole time. For our final film we
will try and include Male and Females in the final story.

3. Do you prefer slasher horror or paranormal horror?

We asked Q3 to find out what percentage of our target audience preferred slasher horror or
paranormal horror. The reason that we asked this question is because we wanted to design a film
around one of these sub-genres. At the end of the interviews we worked out that 66% of the
audience wanted to see a slasher horror; for our final film we base it around the sub-genre of
Slasher Horror.

4. Should we have different nationalities and religions in our film?

We asked Q4 because we live in a multicultural society at this moment in time and we thought it
would be a good idea to include this into our short film. When asking our audience this question
they said that it would be good idea to include this into our short film. When we make out short film
it will be a good idea to include characters from different ethnic backgrounds.

5. Should we have two boys and two girls?

We asked Q5 to find out what type of characters the audience like, the majority of people said they
didn’t mind what gender the characters will be. We will incorporate different genders into our film
so that our audience can enjoy it more and that it makes it more diverse.

6. What weapons should the slasher use?

We asked Q6 to our target audience to find out what weapon should our protagonist use. Whilst
asking these questions our interviewees said that they like films such as Chucky and Friday the 13th
where they use weapons such as Knives and Chainsaw’s. For our short film it may be hard to include
a chainsaw so I think that we will incorporate a fake / play knife into our film.
7. What do you find scary in a horror film?
We asked this question to our target audience to find out what they find scary in horror films. The
reason that we have asked this is to find out what is scary and to include it into our film. We want to
include this into our short film because it means that we for the conventions of a horror film and
make it more thrilling to watch for the audience.

8. What is your favourite sub-genre of horror?

For this question most people said that they prefer watching Slasher’s or Thrillers. Our group choose
to do a Slasher film this was a good decision as a large percentage of our audience said that they like
watching slashers.

9. Where do you expect a horror film to be set?

We asked Q9 because we wanted to know where our audience thought was conventional /
Stereotypical to see in horror films. Most of our audience said that they see a lot of Horror films set
in places such as Forrest’s. For our short film we are not going to film in a Forrest because we want
to stand out from other Horror films and make it feel like the audience hasn’t seen a horror film like
this before.

10. What is your favourite horror film?

We asked Q10 to see what things were included within peoples favourite Horror Films. Most people
said that their favourite horror film was Friday the 13th. Things included in Friday the 13th are a
Protagonist who is very evil and sidestick, fake blood, death and weapons such as Knives. Including
these things in our short film would mean that we would fit the conventions of a horror genre and
also that our target audience would enjoy watching our film.

From asking these questions I found out how my target audience feel towards horror movies and
what they like to see in them in order for them to enjoy them. In our horror film, we will be using
jump scares, the slasher winning, and diegetic sound for things such as things like creaking
floorboards. Doing this will make it more enjoyable to watch at home with friends. This will engage
the audience more as it is what they enjoy and what they want to see. The use of blood may be used
as the target audience like the sight of blood in films but this all depends on if I am able to use it on
set, so I will need to ask the permission of the home owners, if I can use the fake blood on the set.
