Copyright is the legal right created by the law a of a country that grants the creator or

assignee of an original work exclusive rights for its use and distribution. It includes

publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize

others to do the same. The creator determines under what conditions, the original work

may be used by others. Copy right is form of protection and it covers both published and

unpublished works. There are exceptions for using this original work. Fair use is anything

that is copied from a copyrighted material. It is done for a limited time and for the

purpose of commenting, criticizing, or imitating a copyrighted work. These uses can be

done and do not have to have the permission from the copyright owner. Fair use can be

used as a defense against any claim of copyright infringement. If you can prove that it

was fair use, it will not be taken as an infringement. The law states that there are four

factors to consider when utilizing information as fair use. The purpose and type of use,

next is the nature of the work, the amount and the quantity of information that was used

in relation to the work as a whole. An example of fair use in education would be, the

teacher's use of a single line from a poem to provide students with an idea on how to

create their own poems. This is likely considered as fair use. Duplicating copyrighted

poems to make profit in a school fundraiser would not be considered fair use. Another

example of fair use can be using videos or clips in order to create a multimedia

presentation for educational purposes. In other words, anything from the internet can be
used as a visual to provide students with a general idea about the assignment that is being

requested by the instructor. However, everyone needs to use their abilities and their own

ideas in order to create an original work. In fact, in the educational world plagiarism is

taken very seriously. If students are found to have copied or duplicate another person’s or

student’s work, their assignment is rejected, and credit will not be given. In conclusion,

copyright must always be considered, and credit should always be given to the work

creator. Fair use should be used and .is acceptable as long as none of the four factors

stated by law are being violated.
