WV Student Success Standards

ALP.SS.3.3.1 apply strategies to reduce stress and protect safety, differentiating between
situations requiring self-help, peer support, adult or professional help.

Purpose of this session: To help strengthen students adult ego state in order to reduce stress

2 minutes – yes or no round, anything that you would like to talk about briefly regarding stress
from the past week?
5-10 minutes – Sharing, if anyone wants to share, in vent session.
3 minutes – Have members finish this sentence: “I must _____________.” Use this as the
bridge to the board of directors; either the board members control that statement right now or
you do.
8 minutes – Explain the board of directors to all members and have them draw theirs. Once
explained, have any members who have already drawn theirs work in dyads or triad to discuss
what they have and what they would like to change about it, if anything.
8 minutes – Have all members share briefly about their board of directors in response to this
question – “How has your board of directors, as it stands right now, contributed to your stress
level?”
5 minutes – Have members label the ego states they think the members of their board
primarily play (as relates to the member’s life, not the board member’s).
5 minutes - Sit in the seat and play the adult to dispute what the member says – show them
that this is what it looks like to sit on the board of directors yourself, to chair the board. If
someone is willing to volunteer, have them sit in the seat – try to chair the board, run the
meeting as opposed to letting me (member or chair of theirs) take over. Have other members
encourage the volunteer and help if need be.
7 minutes – How would you draw your own board of directors? Retcon it the way you would
like it to be, and explain what is different. How would you change things if you (or God or
whoever) was the chair of your own board? How would life be different?
2 minutes – You control the board – but you also have to be prepared to change things a bit.
The board can be comfortable as it is. Have all members hold onto chairs and try to stand and
walk to the door – you can’t hold on and move on.
