This I Believe

Growing up on a farm will teach you many life lessons; I can tell you from firsthand

experience. My dad is by far the hardest working person I have ever known and I am so blessed

to call him dad. However, he does demand an immense amount of hard physical labor from me

on a regular basis. This includes anything from shoveling cow manure to sitting on a tractor

disking for countless hours on end. I will not lie I do not enjoy these tasks as much as he does,

but my dad has taught me a several life lessons that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

These responsibilities have slowly molded me into who I am today and I could not thank my dad

enough for teaching me these important life lessons. Through all he has taught me there were a

couple that are very notable. One of the many principles I live by is that you will get nowhere in

life if you do not work hard.

I believe this statement is one of the truest you will ever hear. Without working hard and

giving it your full 100% effort we as society would not be where we are currently. Reflect on the

Founding Fathers without their determination, persistence, and hard work we could still be a

British subject and under their rule. Another example World War II; without the hard work from

every single soldier there, the world could be very different from what it is today. There are

hundreds of examples throughout history of individuals who stepped up to the plate they were
presented and with hard work they hit a home run, accomplishing their goal whatever it might

have been.

Hard work does not cost anything, all you need is determination and self-motivation. A

great example of this is my friends and I in our College Algebra and our grades in the class. Ben,

Dylan, and I have all the same math knowledge from past classes, yet I have a better grade than

both of them by far. This is not to brag, but to just show how prevalent lack of hard work is in

the world and especially my generation. Dylan hardly pays attention in class, does not take notes,

and forgets to complete his homework most of the time. Dylan’s grade obviously show his habits

of slacking off and not doing his work. Ben does not take notes either and he procrastinates on

doing his assignments constantly. His grades reflect his half effort in the class. While I take notes

in class, pay attention, study, and do the assignments early. I put in the hard work. My grade just

goes to show that anything is possible with hard work and it costs nothing. I am not the smartest

kid in the world, but I can guarantee that I will be hardest working kid you will ever see. I credit

that solely on how I was raised and the qualities that my parents have instilled in me.

I wholeheartedly believe in the statement “You will never get anywhere in life without

hard work.” It is so apparent in our society with who the hard workers are. Ask anyone, and they

will say they experience at least one lazy person at work, school, or whatever the case maybe. I

cannot speak for everyone’s opinion but personally I see my generation as what they are. My

opinion is that many of them are not hard workers. My parents do not have the money to pay for

my college but I would not want them to pay for it. I do not like taking their money. Therefore, I

have been filling out scholarship applications like crazy for the past two months. I do not have

the money so I put in the work to go get it. This is also a reason I try so hard in my classes, I
cannot afford to retake them so by golly I am going to pass them the first time. I have a goal set

for myself and the only way I will obtain it is if I work my butt off every single step of the way.

While my friends at high school blow off their work and misbehave just because we are about to

graduate, I choose to do the opposite. They would rather do the bare minimum to skate by and

barely pass. I work hard because I want to make something of myself. Between your word and

your work ethic what else do you really have in life?

In conclusion hard work is a core principle that everyone should follow. Without it

nothing would get done. I truly believe that the world would go into chaos. Every aspect in life

requires hard work and that is just a fact of life. We are a nation of immigrants. They moved here

with nothing but the clothes on their backs, but with their hard work and determination they are

now living the “American Dream”. Most success one way or another can be traced back to how

hard the individual worked for it. I look around see a generation of young people who have no

idea how to work hard and focus on the goal in front of them. I would be lying if I said I was not

nervous about my generation as they grow into full adults. Hard work is a core quality that

everyone NEEDS to have; they should already have it. Living on a farm has better prepared me

for life than I would have ever thought possible. This principle is one of many I have learned and

I hope others learn it and embrace it as I have. Hard work is the key to achieving your goals. So I

will say it again for the people in the back, “You will not get anywhere in life without hard

work.” This I believe.
