Brenley Brenner, what a cutie! She is the adorable
daughter Brenner & Ali Flaten and a fan of the
Glasgow Scotties as we found her hanging out
at Cal Ripken Field to cheer on the softball team.
Chances are pretty good Brenley will have her
Easter Egg Basket in hand on Saturday at Hoyt
Park (between the Glasgow Civic Center and
Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital) for the
Kiwanis Club’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt which

Easter Egg Safety Tips
Make sure the Easter Bunny at your house pays
“egg”stra attention to Easter egg safety when handling
eggs for dyeing and hunting. Use these tips for Easter
egg safety:
• Keep fresh eggs refrigerated until it’s time to cook
them.
• Wash your hands thoroughly before handling eggs
at every step of the process: cooking, cooling, dyeing
and hiding. Egg shells are porous and let bacteria
penetrate, especially after cooking.
• Cook the eggs until both the yolk and white are firm,
not runny.
• Refrigerate hard-cooked eggs in their cartons until
ready to dye them. Do not eat hard-cooked eggs that
have been out of the refrigerator for more than 2
hours (1 hour in temperatures 90° or higher).
• Don’t color or hide eggs with cracked shells.
• Use only food coloring or food-grade egg dyes to color
eggs. Refrigerate eggs in their cartons immediately
after dyeing.
• When hiding eggs, avoid areas where they could
come in contact with dirt, pets, insects, wild animals,
birds, reptiles or lawn chemicals. Never hide cracked
eggs.
• Total time for hiding and hunting eggs should not
exceed 2 hours. Refrigerate eggs immediately after
they are found.
• If you wish to use dyed hard-cooked eggs as a
centerpiece or other decoration, cook extra eggs just
for this purpose and discard them after use.

Interestingly, #3 on Fortune’s list is former FBI director
Robert Mueller, chief investigator into Russian interference
in the 2016 elections. He and his team didn’t uncover the
smoking guns that President Trump’s critics craved. It’s a
TOP 50 list, so Marilyn coming in at #13 in Fortune’s World’s
Greatest Leaders is quite an accomplishment indeed!
Says Fortune: “Health care costs are inflated in part
by ignorance: The employers who pay the bills often
can’t get medical providers to explain and justify what
they charge. Bartlett helped save Montana’s state health
plan from bankruptcy by demanding transparency from
hospitals and doctors, then negotiating better deals. Other
employers are now clamoring to follow her lead.”
Before joining Rosendale’s team last year, Bartlett turned
around Montana’s state employee health plan from financial
peril to a large budget surplus. You can read NPR and
ProPublica’s national story on Bartlett’s work to understand
how she accomplished this.
She has presented at health care conferences throughout
the country and was instrumental in the creation of Senate
Bill 71, the State Auditor’s legislation to lower prescription
drug prices that passed the legislature with strong bipartisan
support and awaits Governor Bullock’s signature.
In other “this just in” news from from the office of
Matt Rosendale, he has secured a $499,000 settlement with
a Boston-based financial company for failing to follow
Montana securities laws.
LPL Financial will also repurchase securities that were
sold in violation of the law later this year. Those rescission
offers to affected Montanans will include a 3 percent annual
interest rate on top of repayment of the original amount
sold. Problematic sales occurred between October 1,
2006, and May 1, 2018.
LPL’s settlement includes a $300,000 fine and a $199,000
contribution to the Securities Restitution Assistance Fund,
a program overseen by the State Auditor’s office that gives
assistance to Montana victims of securities fraud when they
don’t receive restitution from perpetrators.
“I’m glad we were able to resolve this matter and
Montanans will get their money back, with interest,”
Rosendale said. “Anyone who is selling investments
in Montana needs to comply with our laws by either
registering those securities or using an authorized
exemption from registration.”
The settlement comes after a multi-state
investigation by the North American Securities
Administrators Association (NASAA) revealed that
LPL Financial had violated “Blue Sky” laws. Blue Sky
laws are state regulations that provide safeguards to
protect investors from securities fraud. Montana is a
member of NASAA through Rosendale’s office.

Fly-tying For the Aged

Several years ago, an old man, who I really didn’t
know, died and his wife gave me a grocery bag full of his
fly-tying material.
And for a long time, it sat untouched in the corner of
my office.
Over the years I’ve tied a few miserable-looking
flies, but eventually my hobby quietly disappeared into a
basement corner. Fly-fishing took the next bus out of town.
Then, last week I stumbled across a cheap, metal
and plastic desk headed for the dump and something
clicked. Now, it’s the centerpiece of my resurrected fly-
tying hobby. Just in time for me to dig through that
dust-collecting grocery bag, several other containers
swallowed by a deep closet and a bin full of memories.
Most of us have hobbies through life. They can be as far-
ranging as quilting, stamp collecting or growing roses.
Among those who hunt and fish, some try reloading,
skeet shooting or fly-tying.
Hobbies generally make no sense. In theory, they are
meant to give us relaxation and contentment. In reality,
they steal our time and money like a bank robber. Fly-
tying certainly fulfills that wanted poster. Still, some
flytiers look on their hobby with reverence, equating it to
a higher level of education, akin to a Ph.D.
Meh, maybe.
In hunting there are five recognized stages of
development that many hunters go through. The stages
are meant to reflect the maturing of a hunter from
youngster to elder, from active doer to reflective thinker.
The stages are: shooting, limiting out, selective, method
and philosopher.
Fishing has no set stages of development that I’m
aware of. Yes, many anglers start by using a bobber and
worm, graduate to casting a spinner and end up in an
expensive boat loaded with thousands of dollars of
equipment, or stalking the banks of a renowned trout

stream, dressed in designer fishing duds, handmade
bamboo fly rod in hand.
But countless men and women of all ages are just as
happy to sit on a shore and cast a worm or minnow, then
sit back and watch the world go by.
There are as many reasons to fly fish as there are
rainbow trout in the Missouri River: the physical reward
of catching something to eat, the chance to escape our
daily humdrum lives, the challenge to outwit an animal
whose survival instincts make it much more wary of its
surroundings than we are.
Hobbies can certainly become addictive, even
dangerously so. Fly-tying, however, seems so genteel, so
constructive, so expensive.
There are aspects to fly-tying that make perfect sense,
like trying to imitate the insect fish are currently feeding
on.
Or you could just catch a grasshopper on shore and
put it on a hook.
For me, the old desk, a dead man’s grocery bag of fur
and feathers, a closet full of long-forgotten equipment all
offer a chance to reconnect, to relive a more joyful time,
to chase wary fish and disappearing memories.
As with all hobbies, mine does not require a why. But
if pressed about the need to fly-fish on an isolated stream
with something I’ve created, I would turn to Shakespeare,
as per usual, who said it best when he wrote:
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything.
