------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The exam is closed book and closed notes.
1. The drag F, on a sphere located in a pipe through which a fluid is flowing is to be determined
experimental. Assume that the drag is a function of sphere diameter, d, the pipe diameter, D, the
fluid velocity, V, and the fluid density, 𝜌𝜌. (a) What dimensionless parameters would you use for
this problem (don’t use D as a repeating variable) ? (b) Some experiments using water indicated
for dm=0.2 in, Dm=0.5 in, and Vm=2 ft/s, the drag is 1.5x10-3 lb. Estimate the drag on a sphere
located in a 2 ft dimeter pipe trough which water is flowing with a velocity of 6 ft/s. The sphere
diameter is such that geometric similarity is maintained.

2. Water flows from a two-dimensional open channel and is diverted by an inclined plate illustrated
in Figure. When the velocity at section (1) is 10 ft/s, what horizontal force FAX (per unit width) is
required to hold the plate in position? At section (1) the pressure distribution is hydrostatic, and
𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠
the fluid acts as a free jet at section (2). Neglect Friction (𝛾𝛾𝑤𝑤 = 62.4 𝑓𝑓𝑡𝑡 3 , 𝜌𝜌𝑤𝑤 = 1.94 𝑓𝑓𝑡𝑡 3 ).

3. A viscous, incompressible fluid flows between two infinite, vertical, parallel plates distance h
apart, as shown in the Figure. Use the given coordinate system and assume that the flow is laminar,
𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕
steady, fully developed (𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 = 0), and 2D. Assume pressure gradient is constant and gravity is not
negligible. (a) Simplify the continuity equation and show that 𝑣𝑣 = 0. (b) Using the y-momentum
equation show that pressure is only a function of x. Find (c) velocity distribution 𝑢𝑢(𝑦𝑦), (d) wall
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
shear stress and (e) flow rate per unit width in terms of 𝜇𝜇, 𝜌𝜌, 𝑔𝑔, 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 , and ℎ (questions d and e will be
assigned 1 point out of 10).
