Implementing Policies for Clean Air in Bangladesh and Planned

Industrialization in Bangladesh

Dhaka was ranked third worst among the megacities with polluted air by the World Health
Organization (WHO), last month. The capital has continuously been ranked as one of the
most polluted cities in the world for the past few years based on its air quality.

Though air pollution is a cross cutting issue, Bangladesh is poised to make significant stride in
abating urban air pollution. Since 2006, four additional Continuous Air Monitoring Stations
(CAMS) were set up in Chittagong, the second largest city in the country and home to 6 million
people, Rajshahi and Khulna, with populations of more than one million each. Besides these a
hotspots, CAMS was set up along the busy street at the heart of Dhaka. The city-wide monitoring
network has also been strengthened. The Air Quality Index of two populous cities including Dhaka
is being regularly posted in the Department of Environment website for public information. A
number of key factors are discussed including identification of pollution sources in dense
areas, indoor pollution, emission standards, air pollution caused by wastes, waste
management, industrial cluster, technological adaptation, incentives and guidelines for
setting up of small industries or factories, monitoring, access to information, accountability
of authorities, investment in awareness building among mass to change the attitude towards
environment, and impacts on health.
In Bangladesh, the World Bank continues to be committed to ensure that our financing brings
climate change co-benefits and we are supporting numerous projects focused on inclusive green
growth, to promote a cleaner environment and reduce green-house-gas emissions.
