INFORMATIVE SPEECH OUTLINE

Organizational Method: Topical Order

Topic : Ted Bundy, Most Notorious Criminal in the 20th Century

General Purpose : To Inform

Specific Purpose : To inform my audience on the criminal timeline of Ted Bundy

Central Idea : There are three main stages of his criminal career which are the

ways he murdered, the process of how he was arrested and the

final trial of his conviction

INTRODUCTION

I. Nowadays, the proprietor of crime could be anyone. They could possibly be an

educated fella, and in appearance could have been the quiet boy next door, or the

guy who sat around you in the class.

II. Before further addressing my topic, I would like to introduce to everyone, one of

the most notorious murderers in America, Ted Bundy. Ted Bundy was a clean-cut

law student, had many girlfriends, was a member of the Washington State

Republicans, and worked for a suicide prevention hotline. However, he was a

master manipulator and had everyone around him fooled. Here’s a simple question.

Does anyone know what’s the exact amount of people he had killed? Ultimately,

Ted confessed to a total of 30 murders but some people believe he may have killed

as many as 100 women.

III. As a second year law undergraduate, I’m currently pursuing the study of criminal

law and aspired to establish a well-rounded understanding of murder.

IV. Ladies and gentlemen, for now, I will enlighten everyone with the criminal timeline

of this notorious criminal, Ted Bundy. This is mainly revolving around three stages

1|Page
of his criminal timeline namely the ways he murders people, the process of how he

was arrested and the final trial of his conviction.

(Transition: Let’s start with the first stage of how he murders people.)

BODY:

I. Firstly, his criminal timeline lead off with the ways how he performed the

murders.

A. According to Stanley Yeo, generally, crime is based on two elements which

are the intention (Mens rea) and the conduct (Actus reus) of the

wrongdoer. (Yeo, S. M., Morgan, N. A., & Chan, W. C. (2018))

1. Ted Bundy had the intention to trick the victims into their demise.

a. Murder is like a sport to Ted. He alleged that killing is no different

than house chores or any trade practice that required constant

practice. Besides, he was so proud for such he proclaimed himself to

be having a Ph.D. in murder or serial killing.

b. In his point of view, he regarded his victims as toys which he has the

power to possess, to play with and also to cast them aside whenever

he wanted to.

c. Master of disguise is another name for Ted. He'd often disguise

himself with facial hair or draw on moles and pretend to be an

authority figure. He would pretend to be a police officer or

firefighter to get teens and young women to feel safe enough to leave

with him.

d. On other occasions, it’s thought he would gain women’s trust

because he would wear his arm in a sling to give the women the

2|Page
feeling he was injured and gave a false sense that he was not

dangerous. Then he goes out in public pretending to struggle with

books and boxes hoping a woman might help him.

2. Ted Bundy had performed gruesome conduct of murder.

a. To Ted, murder and rape weren’t satisfying his thirst for serial

killing. Therefore, he performed unconventional ways of

cannibalism to consume parts on them so they would become one

with him.

b. He would often attack them while they were sleeping, leaving them

to death or close to death. After this he would sexually assault, bind,

rape, and kill them. In order to destroy the evidence, he will take the

measures of disposing of the lifeless bodies in the remote location of

deep woods. As follow up actions, Ted often pay visit to the

decaying corpses to have sexual intercourse until the extent that

these bodies were too decomposed or being consumed by animals.

c. In some cases, it came to light that Ted Bundy kept Polaroid's of his

victims. Occasionally, Ted would sleep besides the skulls of his

victims which he referred to as trophies. His method of obtaining

such trophies is through disgusting manner of decapitation.

Furthermore, he would keep the bodies of his victims, even

grooming them and applying make-up to them and also engaged in

sexual acts with their lifeless bodies.

(Transition: No one escapes from the law, not even Ted.)

II. Secondly, the upcoming stage concerned is on the process of how he was

arrested.

A. According to Virginia Law Review Journal, police officers are empowered

to arrest Ted Bundy even without a warrant. (Criminal Procedure. Arrest.

Warrant Unnecessary for Public Felony Arrest on Probable Cause Even

Where Practicable to Obtain One. (1966))

1. Ted Bundy was arrested for the first time.

a. In August 1975, Ted aroused suspicion when he tried to escape the

police by turning his car lights off and speeding through stop signs.

As a consequence, he was stopped and the police found a gym bag

in the car with a ski mask, ice pick, and handcuffs that resembled the

same restraints Ted used to kidnap a woman who survived his attack,

Carol DaRonch.

b. Ted was placed in a line-up examination with other culprits. After a

thorough inspection, Carol was assured that Ted was the one that put

her safety at prejudice and the police had sufficient evidence to

charge him with attempted kidnapping.

2. Ted Bundy had escaped from the law library in the prison and arrested

for the second time.

a. Serving as his own defense counsel, Ted was granted the utilization

of library during a break in his preliminary hearing. Nominally, he

was researching statutes and case laws to strengthen his argument

pertaining to his circumstance. To everyone’s surprise, he fled

through the second-floor window of the library and hastily make his

4|Page
way to Aspen. As soon as he reached Aspen, he stole a car with the

intention to put some distance away from the jail cell.

b. Again, the police officers spotted a conspicuous figure recklessly

speeding. After six days on the run, he was recaptured for the second

time.

3. Ted Bundy had escaped for the second time.

a. After six months of imprisonment, Ted had conspired to escape from

the jail cell.

b. For his masterplan to succeed, Ted managed to get a hand on a

hacksaw from another inmate. Day by day, he was determined to

scrap away layer after layer of the ceiling until the escape path was

finally constructed. Unfortunately, to his dismay, the crawl space

was not big enough to fit Ted wholly. Despite, he figured out the

idea of deliberately restricting his diet in turn to cut down his weight.

c. When he was ready, Ted finished the final touch up for the hole and

crawled up which lead him to a chief jailer’s room. Upon finding it

unoccupied, he swapped his prison jumpsuit for the man’s civilian

clothes and strolled out the jail’s front doors.

4. Ted Bundy was arrested for the last time.

a. Once again, his reckless driving land himself in the eye of the police.

The police pulled him over as soon as they realized the car that ted

driving was a stolen vehicle. In the course of conduct, the police

found identification cards of three dead women in his vehicle

associating him to the murder.

(Transition: For now he stands before the god and accountable to his death sentence.)

III. Thirdly, the final process is related to the trial for the conviction.

A. The probable defence that Ted could have relied on and the punishment for

his conviction.

1. Ted Bundy had given up on the pleading of insanity.

a. According to Dorothy O. Lewis (Stieg, C., 2019), a psychiatrist from

the New York University Medical Center, diagnosed Ted as bipolar,

then considered him a possible case of multiple personalities.

b. Despite supported with various testimonies from experts, he resisted

the notion that he is actually insane. Throughout his ongoing trial,

Ted deliberately disregarding his panel of lawyers and took all

matter into his own hand insisting on defending himself.

c. Ted had lost all traces of his confident demeanour by this stage, and

the volume of forensic evidence and eyewitness testimony linking

him to the crime convinced the jury to again return a guilty verdict.

2. Ted Bundy had finally met his end.

a. The crowd was celebrating outside of the prison as if there was some

sort of carnival. Indeed, it is a matter worthy to celebrate. One of the

evilest criminals was scheduled to be electrocuted.

b. The night before the execution, Ted requested for an interview

session and confessing his heinous crime by taking full

responsibility for the murders. Yet, Ted blamed his long-held

pornography addiction which escalating throughout the time to a

degree of violence.

c. He was constantly crying and praying before he was led to the death

chamber. As he was transferred to the death chamber, he was

6|Page
strapped into the electric chair and he began mumbling words unable

to be comprehended by ordinary man. However, he managed to

regain his conscious and delivered his last word which was to give

his love to his family and friends.

d. Ted bowed his head as he prepared for the electrocution. Since the

preparation was completed, two thousand volts of electricity was

discharged to his body. The surging of electrical stream burned his

tightened body and smoke could be seen from his right leg. After the

machine was turned off, the doctor made a final checked on him to

confirm the certainty of his death.

e. On January 24, 1989, at 7:16 a.m., the crowd cheered with victorious

chants, "Burn, Bundy, burn!" Ted Bundy, one of the most notorious

killers of all time was eradicated.

CONCLUSION

I. In conclusion, one death had restored the faith of millions. It was a relief to the

family members of the victims. Do you feel the fear of getting targeted by some

random psychopath? Hopefully, people like Ted Bundy doesn’t lurk around in your

neighbourhood. At the prime of his time, he successfully evades from the eyes of

the police despite his unconventional ways of murder. Yet, this leads him to his

various amount of arrest and the trial for his final judgment.

II. Ted Bundy was born evil. The prosecution was the best award for the family

members of the victims. Ultimately, he was punished under the judgment of law.

Indeed, justice always prevails.
