LESSON RATIONALE
Developmentally our students are starting to learn about their community and how community members can help make a
difference. Thus, we will be expanding upon our students knowledge of what a good citizen is and how they and others
can and have made a difference.

READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal:
a. Students will develop a deeper understanding of chosen characters.
b. Students will gain knowledge of positive traits of a citizen.
B. Objective:
a. Students will identify positive characteristics traits of a good citizen.
b. Students will also identify the positive impacts good citizens have had on society.
C. Standards:
a. NCSS: III People, Places, & Environments: Social studies programs should include experiences that
provide for the study of people, places, and environments,
b. IAS:2.2.5 Identify people who are good citizens and describe the character traits that make them
admirable.
* citizen: someone with rights and responsibilities in a particular community, city, state or country

II. Management Plan


a. Materials:
 “Good Citizen” interactive vocab sheet
 Students notebooks
 Markers, crayons, and (or) colored pencils
 Vocabulary words anchor chart
 Word search
 Skit cards (charades)
 Voting cards

b. Time: 25-45 minutes


c. Space:
 We will start off in the “living room”
 Students will be seated in their normal seats for the remainder of the lesson.

d. Behavior:
 Keep students on task
 Continue to implement the same management plan that the students have been using all year.

III. Adaptation to Individual Differences and Diverse Learners:
a. Learning disabilities: for students with SLD, and how have a harder time comprehending the
information, I will provide them with the definitions to the vocabulary words. In addition to having the
words listed on the board. This way students will have multiple resources.
b. Autism: Make sure the students know the order of the lesson of the lesson, give verbal warnings when
transitions are coming.
c. ADHD: For students that struggle with staying on task and focusing, I may move them to a table with up
front with myself to help keep them on task or partner them up with another student.

PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION (CAEP K-6 1.b)


IV. Anticipatory Set
 Playing charades.
 We will start out in the family room.
 I will start out by introducing the game.
 “Hey guys, so today I have a game to play I want to play with you. “
 Explain the game
 “have the special deck of cards, and once I pick a card I have to ack out what is on the card. “
 “I am going to give you guys a hint.”
 “Each card is either going to be someone doing something good or bad”
 “ you guys are going to vote if you think the action was good or bad.”
 Pass out voting cards
 “ after the person is done acting then you guys hold up the good card if you think the action was good, or the bad
card if the action was bad.”
 Pick a card and demonstrate. Have students vote
 Act put one more
 Pick a few students to act some out
 After I have acted a few cards out and the students have guessed break them up into partners and they each get to
act once.
 Students can either use a card or create their own good or bad action.
 Bring students back together.

V. Purpose: just like our game there are good actions and bad actions people can make. Today we are going to be
learning about how citizens behavior can help where they live.

VI. Lesson Presentation (Input/Output)


 Dismiss one table at a time to go get their notebooks and the vocab sheets off of the kidney table.
 After all the students are seated I will introduce each vocabulary word and their meaning.

o Courage
o Truthfulness
 I will allow time for students to interact with the vocab words.
 After I have introduced the vocab words I will instruct students to turn to the next blank page in their notebooks.
 “you guys will be cutting on the doted lines.”
 “After you are done cutting you will glue this strip (give visual) to your paper.”

 When you are done with that then you will write the definition under the word.”
 “all definitions are up on the board, but I will also give you a vocab list if you want one.”
 Pass out list to students who want it or may need it.
 “now I know you guys have been working really hard on your characters for the Wax museum.”
 “On the back of your paper I want you to pick one of our vocabulary words that best fits your character.”
 “I want you to draw a picture of your character and write one sentence about why your character was a good
citizen (or bad if necessary).
 Once you are done bring your notebook to either Mrs. Cunningham or myself to check.
 If students get done and are needing something to do, give them the word search.

VII. Check for understanding.


a. As students are filling out their terms I will be walking around and looking at their work
b. Answer questions if students have them
c. If I notice a student struggling, then If they don’t already have the definition list I will give them one.
d. If that is still not enough I will stop the lesson and reteach the words and give examples.
VIII. Review learning outcomes / Closure –
a. Have each student come up and show:
• The terms
• The drawing and sentence

PLAN FOR ASSESSMENT


A. Formative: filling out the interactive notebook vocab terms and formulating a sentence on how their character
demonstrated the characteristics of a good citizen.
B. Summative: Summative assessment is the student’s project/speech for their wax museum character.
