Hot Topic
• Cloud Computing has become a hot topic
in recent years.
• Cloud Computing is the biggest buzz in
the computer world there days.
• Research firm IDC thinks that cloud
computing will reach $42 billion in 2012.
• There are big namer like Amazon and
Microsoft offering cloud services.
What is Cloud Computing?
• Cloud Computing is a construct that allow you to
access applications that actually reside at a location
other than your computer or other Internet
Connected device, most often this will be a distant
data center.
• The beauty of Cloud Computing is that another
company hosts costs of servers, they manage the
software update and you pay less for the service.
• Cloud Computing promises to and operational and
capital cost and more importantly let IT
departments focus on strategic projects instead of
keeping the data center running.

Cloud Compoments
• Clients
– Clients are the device that the end users interact with to manage
their information on the cloud.
– Mobile, Thin Client, Thick Client…… etc.
• Data Center
– The data center is the collection of servers where the application
to which clients subscribe is housed.
• Distributed Servers
– Servers are not necessarily housed in the same location. Servers
can be in geographically disparate location.
• Infrastructure
– Cloud Computing isn’t a one-size-fits-all affairs. There are
several different ways the infrastructure can be displayed. The
infrastructure will depend on the application and how the
provider has chosen to build the cloud solution.
Virtualization
• Virtualization is a technique in which a complete
installation of one machines in run on another. The result
is a system in which all software running on the server is
within a virtual machine.
• Virtualization is relevant to cloud computing because it is
one of the ways in which client can access services on
the cloud.
• Virtualization has been successful for several purposes:
• Storing a computer system among multiple users.
• Isolating users from each other and from the Contract
Program.
• Emulating hardware on another machine.
Cloud Computing Services
• Software as a Service (SaaS)
• Platform as a Service (PaaS)
• Hardware as a Service (HaaS)
• Database as a Service (DaaS)
Software as a Service (SaaS)
• SaaS provide network-based access to
commercially available software. Since the
software is managed at a central location,
customers can access their applications
wherever they have web access.
• SaaS is the model in which an application is
hosted as a service to customers who access it
via the internet.
• The biggest benefits is costing less money then
buying the application outright.
Benefits of SaaS
• Reduced cost
• Increased storage
• Automation
• Flexibility
• Better mobility
• Better use of IT staff
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
• PaaS supplies all the resources required to build
applications and services completely from the
internet without having to download or install
software.
• PaaS Services include application design,
development, testing, deployment and hosting.
Other services include team collaboration, web
service integration, database integration,
security, scalability, storage, state management
and versioning.
Hardware as a Service (HaaS)
• Rather than purchase servers, software,
rack, and having to pay for the datacenter
space for them, service provider rents
those resources such as service space,
Network equipment, Memory, CPU cycles,
Storage space..etc
• The infrastructure can be dynamically
scaled up or down based on the
application resource needed.
Database as a Service (DaaS)
• The idea behind DaaS is to avoid the complexity
and cost of running own database.
• DaaS offers the benefits such as Ease of Use,
Power, Integration and Ease of Management.
• Providers:
• Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server Data Services (SSDS)
• Oracle Oracle Data base 11g
Oracle Fusion Middleware
Oracle Enterprise Manager
First Movers on the Cloud
• Amazon
Amazon offers a number of cloud services:
Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)
Simple Storage Service (S3)
Simple Quence Service (SQS)
Simple D13
• Google
Google App Engine
• Microsoft
Window Azure Service
• Salesforce.com
