CHAPTER - I

INTRODUCTION

 BACKGROUND

 SOCIAL NETWORKING & MEDIA

1. Social Media Before 1900

The earliest ways of communication over longer distances used written correspondence
transferred by hand from one person to another. In other words, letters. The earliest kind of
postal service dates back to 550 B.C., and this fundamental delivery system would become
more widespread and streamlined in the coming centuries.

In 1792, the telegraph was born. This enabled everyone in which messages to be transferred
over a longer distance far quicker than a horse and rider could carry them. Although telegraph
messages were short, they were a revolutionary way to convey news and information.

Although no longer popular outside of drive-through banking, the pneumatic post, formed in
1865, created another way for letters to be delivered instantly between recipients. A
pneumatic post utilizes underground pressurized air tubes to carry capsules from one region
to another.

Two great discoveries occurred in the last decade of the 1800s: The telephone in 1890 and the
radio in 1891.

Both technologies are still in use now, although the latest versions are much more
sophisticated than their predecessors. Telephone lines and radio signals allowed people to
communicate over large distances instantaneously, something that mankind had never felt
before.

2. Social Media in the 20th Century

Technology started to change very quickly in the 20th Century. After the first supercomputers
were built in the 1940s, scientists and engineers began to improve ways to create networks
between those computers, and this would later lead to the birth of the Internet.

The earliest forms of the Internet, such as CompuServe, were developed in the 1960s.
Primitive forms of email were also formed during this time. By the 70s, networking

6
technology had developed, and 1979’s UseNet enabled users to communicate through a
virtual newsletter.

3. Social Media Today

After the invention of blogging, social media started to explode in popularity. Sites like
MySpace and LinkedIn gained prominence in the early 2000s, and sites like Photobucket and
Flickr helped online photo sharing. YouTube came out in 2005, creating an entirely new way
for people to communicate and share with each other over great distances.

By 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became accessible to users throughout the world. These
sites remain some of the most successful social networks on the Internet. Other sites like

Tumblr, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began popping up to fill particular social
networking niches.

Today, there is a tremendous variety of social networking sites, and several of them can be
linked to allow cross-posting. This creates an atmosphere where users can reach the highest
number of people without sacrificing the intimacy of person-to-person contact. We can only
speculate about what the tomorrow of social networking may look in the next decade or even
100 years from now, but it seems clear that it will exist in some form for as long as people are
alive.

WhatsApp Messenger

Whatsapp is one of the advances in the technology sector basically this is used on smart
mobile phones and computers. As Smartphones became famous, many messaging and chat
services were originated to capture a share in the market but Whatsapp has become very
popular between them & there biggest competitors are Hike.In the initial stage The service is
free for one year and after that, a very tiny amount is charged yearly but it was not made.
Besides all, this App is highly addictive and can create a great impact on daily users, and
apart from that, it can leave a trace that becomes tough to control and cure. Some of the most
prominent technological changes are smartphones, laptops and using the internet. They have

7
greatly affected many aspects of our lives. Now the Internet continues to grow day by day at
an unbelievable speed. About 32.7% of the world’s population has access to the internet
Howe,( 2012). The research examines the fact that the outcome of the Whatsapp messenger
and the invading technology represented in the use of personal computers and Smartphone on
the behavior of students and their academic performance in tertiary institutions in Ghana. The
subjects of interest about the students are their friendships and social lives, family relations,
general health and personal achievements on campus. Whatsapp Messenger has been around
for a while but recent updates have developed the functionality of the application since its
release date. The main purpose of this application is to replace SMS with a cross-platform
mobile messenger that works on an internet data plan. If you have infinite text, it is still
beneficial as it is a helpful way to skip international fees that carriers may charge. It is
currently available for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Nokia Symbian60, and S40 and
Blackberry. It is quite successful because there is no cost to message friends and family other
than the internet data plan that users already have on their phones. It is easy to get started.
Simply enter the telephone number of the device into the app. It then sorts through the
contacts (with your permission) on the phone to figure out who else also has the app already
installed. Users can then invite more contacts or go ahead and start sending messages to the
ones that the app discovered. The Whatsapp messenger was purposely created by Brian
Acton and Jan Koum (2009) to make communication and the distribution of multimedia
messaging more easily and quickly and recently the Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg buys
WhatsApp. In as much as the application brings us so many benefits, it has also got it flaws
that are currently causing more hurt than good among the students today. In cognizance of the
rate at which our youth at tertiary institutions are hooking up to social media, there is the
necessity to educate them on its advantages and disadvantages in their educational
performance accordingl

Facebook

Nowadays most of the population is using Facebook to make a social network between
people all over the globe and there is more than 2 billion people are using facebook And
modern generation students are also spending most of their time on such social media called

8
Facebook. Facebook.com (Facebook), the most & one of the famous and commonly used
online social media Website, has created feeling among college and universities students in
modern years. College students become very interest in online social networking and social
media activities.

“Online social network sites such as Facebook act as an important entertainment for
undergraduates & postgraduates, especially for engineering and management students.
Facebook, one of the most popular social network site, was particularly designed for
undergraduates & postgraduates and is the most commonly used. Therefore, time spent on
Facebook may influence the academic performance of the students. For example, time spent
on Facebook may directly affect and/or reasonable the students’ academic performance.

This provided me with an opportunity to see the students learn, unfettered from classical
learning constraints. However, it would take a while for the students to fully examine their
learning within this new space. Initially, the students would often attempt to defer to me and
my guidance. Only after I repeatedly refused to control their education experience did they
begin to behave in a self-organizing way and allow me to recognize their “natural” learning
patterns.

The research revealed in the United States & United Kingdom that Facebook platform
provided students with a series of learning affordances. Affordances are “can do”
opportunities, some intentional and others unintentional, that technology spaces provide. In
this case, the research revealed the fact that affordances at play were accessibility,
connection, communication, direction, and construction. These affordances give valuable
insights into how students learn in digital spaces.

Linkedin

A lot of MBA students and graduates usually wonder why they have to update their LinkedIn
profile and it gets pushed to their ‘Never Gonna Do’ list. Let’s face it, LinkedIn doesn’t give
you the skill of relationship building, the emotional connection or the shared memories. It
allows networking but does not facilitate essential friendships. So why exactly should you
update your LinkedIn profile?

9
Why LinkedIn?

Source – LinkedIn
 A Great Platform for connecting with professionals:
It is very necessary to network with the people in your industry and carry on the
connection which you once made with them in person. LinkedIn lets you do just that –
create strong relationships, between professionals,collegues , serviceman,entrepreneur
like-minded individuals, thought-leaders and people whom you share related interests
with. You can ask questions, share information, get valuable insights, voice your ideas
and know about job opportunities.
 The ultimate personal branding platform:
Your LinkedIn page is the best platform to develop yourself as a professional. You
can key in your achievements, your job knowledge and topics which interest you. It
can be used as a platform to promote your skills, build credibility as a professional
and increase your clarity. Videos and images in the summary and experience fields
can truly tell a three-dimensional view of your brand, painting a compelling picture of
who you are in the real environment.
 The best place to get hired:
If you are looking for job openings, LinkedIn is the premium place that gives you a
high probability of landing into one. It can recommend jobs that match your profile
and show related job listings. You can tour company pages and track them for job
opportunities. Hiring managers use LinkedIn to find excellent candidates.
 Great way of being found on Google:
LinkedIn pages, both individual and company, tend to place really well on Google. If
you have a LinkedIn page, there are high probabilities that the page will be one of the
first results when somebody searches you on Google.

10
BYJU’S
In the current scenario, it is next to impossible to think to gain access to any form of
information, without the guidance of the internet. It won’t be wrong to tell, that everything is
going to be, or is already digitalized, whether it is online shopping, booking a ticket for a
movie or online chatting. Basically, we are surrounded by technology from all corners.

With e-learning, we can expect students to reach one step ahead intellectually from learning
textbooks. Technically, e-learning is electronic learning, and typically this means using a
computer or a device to study from. E-learning is available in almost every field like
academic – school & college or for full distance learning course and business and
management training.

E-learning gives lots of advantages and if these are utilized efficiently by students, they will
be able to give their best in their examination.

The videos, images, presentations, assessments and other media sources help to bridge the
gap between the classroom and the world around us. Online educational content also helps to
show students why they need to learn a particular topic by explaining to them the application
of a particular concept to a real-life situation. It helps students realize the significance of a
subject, process or concept in real life, as they are on the way to becoming global contributors
in the future.

Many face to face programs only operates within normal working hours. By allowing staff to
complete the course when and where they like you can make sure disruptions to your busy
working plan are minimized. This also means that your staff will be happier because they
don’t need to travel to particular education center’s, and if they have important work to catch
up on compulsory training can be done in exchange for lieu time.

11
E-Learning is a quickly growing industry and overall, the value of e-learning is now a given
fact that it can offer an option that is much faster to process, cheaper and probably great

 FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The internet and social networking were designed for us to easily connect.
Smartphones gadgets enable us to connect quickly to people and knowledge like
never before. The result has left our minds continually having to react to all the
streaming live data and recognize and interpret it as quickly as the next data stream
comes. So, in this era that is controlled by constant information and a new way to be
social, wouldn’t it naturally make sense that we would change the way we interact
with our students? They are, after all, at the center of this cultural shift.

Teachers and professors are now forced to explain in a way that is innovative and
provides the student to think independently. Students should be ready to answer to the
data introduced to them as rapidly and responsively as their short notice span allows.
Since our brains are shifting to the way we respond to information as a whole, it is
only natural that teachers and administrators shift the way they provide data in the
classroom. Kids are exploring iPads when they are in diapers. Many are masters at
the iPads by KG class. So how do we build an engaging atmosphere for today’s
students?

 Allow and Motivates Students to Share Work Socially:

Here’s a famous example: Anna Divinsky at Penn State University built an iTunes class
called Art 10: Introduction to Visual Studies. The class was then adapted into a huge open
online program where students were able to assessing each other’s work for each class
assignment. Student’s varied how they shared their work, some choosing Flickr and tagged
their art work others hashtagging their art on Twitter. Some posted to Facebook and keep

12
posting even though the class is over and has been for some time. Anna understood the
language needing to be spoken to reach her public was the language they use to speak to one
another outside of class. This is the mindset we need to have as we educate and work in
student’s lives to make a difference.

 Have Students Keep a Blog:

Ted Magner, a professor at NYU teaching The Business of Media made his students
keep a “trends” blog to keep up student activity and keep them reading important
articles every day. It also kept the students continually close with hyperlinks, image
embeds and the ability to cite sources digitally. They were able to find their voices as
writers but in a digital age where they could design their own digital presence. This is
invaluable to teach to students as they learn to understand the value of a digital
presence for their future professions.

 Use Hashtags to Facilitate Discussions:

People today are using Twitter as their #1 source for finding knowledge. If educators
allowed students to live to tweet some classroom discussions and hashtag the
school, universities & class or tweet questions to the instructor during classroom time, this
could prove valuable to the way students understand the information being given. A
journalism class at NYU requested some prominent journalists to come to speak. The more
than 200 students were inspired to live-tweet the interview and hashtag the specific class.
The hashtag ended up becoming a trendy topic in the city because they were so frequent and
there were so many. Students then had to turn in a summary based on all their classmates’
tweets.
