The fascination with electricity and the desire to produce and store it has been a priority
since ancient times. Alessandro Volta invented the first battery or electrochemical
generator capable of producing an electrical current maintained in time, and was
therefore known as a voltaic battery, in 1800.
Electric battery is a device that converts chemical energy into electricity. All batteries
are formed by an electrolyte (which can be liquid, solid or pasty), a positive electrode
and a negative electrode. The electrolyte is an ionic conductor; while one electrode
generates electrons and the other accepts them.
The batteries contain several pollutants considered dangerous such as zinc, cadmium,
lead and mercury. When, the used batteries are thrown away with the rest of the waste,
these batteries go to the landfill or to the incinerator. Then, mercury and other toxic
heavy metals can reach the environment and harm living beings. Following the food
chain, mercury can affect the human being. Did you know that a single mercury battery
can contaminate 600,000 liters of water and an alkaline 167,000 liters ?.
La fascinación por la electricidad y el deseo de producirla y guardarla ha sido
una prioridad desde tiempos antiguos.
