Ratings: (H) Highly Effective, (E) Effective, (D) Developing, (I) Ineffective, (N/O) Not Observable Domain 1: Planning and Preparation Ms. Fricke created this lesson taking into account her other units throughout the year. She actively builds in the differences of her students by offering a means of assessment that individualizes the feedback given to each child. The integration of technology is a great way to build engagement in every subject. She even built in character education pieces into her main academic objective which demonstrates how Ms. Fricke actively seeks to build rapport and understand her students better. 1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy H E D I 1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students H E D I 1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes H E D I 1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources H E D I 1e: Designing Coherent Instruction H E D I 1f: Designing Student Assessments H E D I Domain 2: The Classroom Environment The rapport Ms. Fricke has with her students is exceptional. She has a warm classroom environment where students feel safe and supported, but also challenged. Students were readily taking risks by offering up their incorrect answers during the Plickers activity so that other students could diagnose where the misconceptions were rooted. Her language is calming and allows for students to feel at ease, even when they make a mistake. There were virtually no off task behaviors because all students were engaged in the lesson from start to finish. 2a: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport H E D I 2b: Establishing a Culture for Learning H E D I 2c: Managing Classroom Procedures H E D I 2d: Managing Student Behavior H E D I 2e: Organizing Physical Space H E D I Domain 3: Instruction Ms. Fricke uses higher order thinking questions and pushes her students to not only know the right answer, but know why others are wrong. She does not say an answer is correct, she directs the students to defend their answer and provide evidence that it is in fact correct. This allows the students to take ownership of their own learning and allows them to fully understand concepts in her class. She made it to every single group and gave feedback to every single student during the scavenger hunt activity. Formative assessments were constant, allowing Ms. Fricke to understand exactly who was understanding the lesson, and who was not. The students visibly want to learn and be engaged for their teacher and for themselves. 3a: Communicating with Students H E D I 3b: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques H E D I 3c: Engaging Students in Learning H E D I 3d: Using Assessment for Instruction H E D I 3e: Demonstrating Flexibility and Responsiveness H E D I Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities 4a: Reflecting on Teaching H E D I N/O 4b: Maintaining Accurate Records H E D I N/O 4c: Communicating with Families H E D I N/O 4d: Participating in a Professional Community H E D I N/O 4e: Growing and Developing Professionally H E D I N/O 4f: Showing Professionalism H E D I N/O Comments Observer Comments Ms. Fricke has a great rapport with her students and creates a wonderful environment in which to learn. She uses technology as a means of formative assessments in a meaningful way that allows students to aim for quality responses. This lesson was very strong and is a great example of how a math lesson can be fun, engaging, and rigorous. Ms. Fricke is going to figure out how to implement coding and cross curricular content into future lessons as she continues to develop her already strong teaching skills. Teacher Comments
