1. Engine cooling water circuit:

The mechanical pump pumps the engine cooling water into the cooling jacket of the cylinder block
through two external lines (left and right engine side).
Vertical bores supply engine cooling water to the cylinder heads. Water flows through the heads, cools
them and is then fed back through the engine cooling water return line to the pump. Some of the water
flowing through the engine cooling water return line is diverted and also used to cool the exhaust gas
turbocharger.

2. Air-gas cooling circuit:

On engines of this performance class it is necessary to cool the air-gas mixture to a maximum
temperature of 50°C.
The air-gas cooler is designed with 2 stages, whereby the 2nd stage is cooled with cold water of approx.
40°C.
Depending on local preconditions, the heat exchangers (mixture / water) can be connected as follows.

Water entering (heat exchanger mixture/water stage 2) M
Water exiting (heat exchanger mixture/water stage 2) N

On engine versions B01; B15; B16; B27 the low-temperature mixture cooling circuit (stage 2) is not
required.

3. Cooling water pre-heating system:

Pre-heating the engine cooling water allows the engine to be put under load immediately after the engine
is started.
The engine cooling water is heated to approx. 60°C.
This can be achieved either by an electric heater unit or a heat exchanger (hot water or vapour).
An electric pump is used to ensure that the warm cooling water is circulated around the engine’s water
rooms.

The cooling water pre-heating system does not replace antifreeze additive in the cooling water!
