VISITOR’S CENTRE
The Auroville Visitors and Reception Centre is a popular and pleasant place for the use of visitors and Aurovilians alike.

Type of building use: Institutional building for visitors to

Auroville
Ar : Suhasini Iyer
Year of completion: 1988 – on going
Built-up area: Presently about 5000 m2 but constantly
developing due to growing demand
Plot size: 3 acres
Location: Auroville International Zone, Auroville
Climatic Zone: Hot Humid coastal zone
Actual Occupancy: Normal days 2,000 visitors /day
and over 10,000 visitors during holidays and weekend.
DESIGN EVOLUTION:

The concept of the Visitors Centre had been initially

designed by Suhasini Iyer, but she had absolutely no
knowledge and experience about earth architecture and
site management.
Satprem Maïni joined Auroville to design fully and build
this centre, and at the same time create the former
Auroville Building Centre / Earth Unit.
Satprem trained Suhasini, gave a technical design to the
concept and mostly managed the construction site.

AUROVILLE EARTH INSTITUTE MISSION STATEMENT:
 To revive traditional skills, and to link ancestral and vernacular traditions of raw earth construction with the modern
technologies of stabilized earth.
To enable and empower people to build their own dwellings using earthen techniques. To develop cost effective
technologies, affordable to all.
To demonstrate that earth, as a building material, can be used for creating a modern, progressive, eco-friendly and safe
habitat

PHILOSOPHY ON SUSTAINABILITY:
 The Auroville Earth Institute lays emphasis on the proper management of both human and natural resources to build a
sustainable future.
 Human resource management: To offer awareness, training and education to people, to enable and empower people to
develop a skill and a livelihood.
Natural resource management: To manage natural resources appropriately, with sensitivity to the ecological balance of a
place. It is possible to sustainably use local resources with respect for nature and for people!

GRANITE BLOCK FOUNDATIONS AND EARTH BLOCK STRUCTURES :

A composite type of foundation in stabilized mud mortar was used because of its advantages. The material to be used had to
essentially have a greater load bearing capacity. Thus the use of fired bricks was eliminated and locally mined rough granite
blocks were used instead. This foundation was cheaper and less time consuming than the conventional fired brick foundation,
and most of it could be done using unskilled labour.

flooding problems during the monsoon.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING:

At the foot of this hill it is intended to create a pond to catch rainwater from the roof areas of the buildings and contribute
to the landscaped beauty of the entrance garden space.

Introduction

 At the very center of Auroville, one finds the

‘soul of the city’, the matrimandir, situated in a
MATRIMANDIR large open area called ‘peace’, from which the
AR. ROGER ANGER future township will radiate outside.

 The spacious inner chamber is the upper

hemisphere of the structure is completely white,
with white marble walls and white carpeting.

 In the center a pure crystal glass globe, suffuses

a ray of electronically guided sunlight which falls
on it through an opening at the apex of the
sphere.

 “The most important thing is this : the play of the

sun on the center. Because that becomes the
symbol, the symbol of future realizations.”

 There are no images, no organized meditations,

no flowers, no incense, no religion and no
religious forms.

 The mother named the four pairs of pillars

which support the matrimandir after her four
aspects of personalities. They are maheshwari,

mahakali, mahalakshmi and mahasaraswati .

SITE PLAN
. The Geodesic dome is covered by golden discs
and reflects sunlight, which gives the structure its
characteristic radiance.
The Matrimandir is situated at the center of
Auroville next to a Banyan tree.
The exterior is completely covered with a thin
sheet of gold. It is placed as small square tiles on
the discs.
INNER SKIN
From the outside the matrimandir looks like a radiant sun but from
inside the mother wanted it look like a translucent sphere which
lets in a golden pink light.

INNER CHAMBER
It has a 12m radius. The floor is covered with a white woolen
carpet.
The wall is 8.65m high. It has 12 facets which represent the 12
months of the year and are clad with white marble.

LIGHT AND VENTILATION

It had no windows and is fully air-conditioned. This is done to
attain complete silence inside the chamber.
The only light is that comes from a vertical beam of light which is
slightly golden.
