The teacher will show his/her B1 students this chart(see other doc.) and he will explain
briefly the History of the English Language and the different periods. He will make
reference to the impact of different civilizations living in Britain and the most
important historical facts that influence the History of the English Language. He will
also mention Roman and Celtic invasions before the official start of English and some
changes that the language has undergone throughout its history. The teacher will make
sure that the students understand that these changes can affect different branches of
the language (syntax, lexis…)but he should not go deep into these changes. He will use
no more than fifteen minutes.
Then, the teacher will divide the students in groups of three or four(depending on the
number of students in class)and he will play the fist extract of the video “The History of
English in ten minutes”(available in www.youtube.com). For a better comprehension
he will play the video twice and offer the students the chance to read subtitles in
English. After the reproduction of the first chapter he will encourage the different
groups of students to answer some questions(for instance:How many words can you
remember from this period?,Why do you think that these words appear in this
period?,Is English a Germanic Language? Or Could you summarize this chapter?).In
this way,the teacher will play the ten extracts of this video and after each chapter he will
go on with this procedure of making questions to students, who should answer them
with the help of their groups, and they should do it orally. The double reproduction of
the video lasts twenty five minutes approximately and the teacher should spend fifteen
minutes of the class asking the students.
Dealing with some students with specific needs the teacher will make sure that they
also take part in the lesson. It would be advisable to prepare another kind of “more
visual” questions for the students who have attention difficulties(ADHS) so that they
can be
succesful due to the fact that the video shows the History with a touch of humour. For
those with auditory problems it would be recommendable to provide the pdf file with
the script of the text so that these students can follow the rythm of the class. In this way
the teacher makes sure that he is providing attention to diversity.

Among the goals of this class we can highlight the next ones:
-To encourage students to learn new words and their origin and to learn about the
History of the English Language
-To develop their linguistic competence(students will improve communicative
skills,readind,listening,speaking…
-To promote collaborative learning

For the C1 level students the teacher will show two videos in class: the first one will be
“History of English Language”(available in Youtube.com).After the reproduction of the
video the students will be able to make a brief idea of the history and origins of the
language,as well as to recognize some changes that our language has undergone
troughout some centuries. The teacher will encourage students to make some
questions to him/her related to possible doubts. Then,he will go deep into the content of
the video, making reference to the main historical, political and economical facts that
contribute to the evolution of the language and some other changes that affect
syntax, lexis, phonology and phonetics…The teacher will make sure that the students
understand these language changes(external and internal). In order to show this
evolution he can also show the students some example of changes belonging to the
different branches of the language(see www.History of English:Language Change and
Development-Linköping)for them to make a clear idea of the evolution of the
language. The duration of the video is nine minutes and in total the the teacher will not
spend more than forty minutes.
Then, the teacher will play the video “the History of English in ten minutes”(available in
www.youtube.com) and this way the students will be able to make a better idea about
the history of the language, and they will also learn about another interesting
facts…After the video the teacher will give a worksheet to his students with a list of
some meaningful words and language changes belonging to the different periods and
they should recognize what period they belong to and why.The students should finish
this exercise at home if they do not have time to finish in class.
Regarding the students with special needs,as they are University students,I suppose
that we refer to visual or auditory problems,in this case the teacher should provide the
script of the videos and he should also make sure that the students with visual
problems count on a special worksheet(adapted) for them to work. For some students
with High Capacities the teacher will increase the difficulty of the worksheet and he
could also include a text in Old English for them to translate and look for the major
