B1. Important scientific achievements of the project leader
Dr. Cristian Mornos is a senior cardiologist at the Institute of Cardiovasculare Diseases
(ICVD) Timisoara, having an expertise in the transthoracic and transoesophageal
echocardiography field, as well as in interventional cardiology. Starting with 2004, he is
also teaching in the Cardiology Teaching Departement of the ”Victor Babeş” University of
Medicine and Pharmacy (UMPh), Timişoara, currently beeing a lecturer .
Starting with the doctoral studies period, his research activity took the shape of a great
number of scientific papers, of what we can count 20 ISI article with a total IF of 30,139
and at least 140 abstracts papers in national and international scientific meetings.
His ongoing interest in the field of echocardiography was also illustrated by his PhD thesis,
that he sustained in 2009, thesis having the title ”New methods for the evaluation of left
ventricular function using tissue Doppler echocardiography”. This paper brought important
scientific achievements in the field of tissue Doppler left ventricle evaluation. His research
activity also counts for a number of original ideas. One of these is represented by defining a
new index that summarizes systolic and diastolic tissue Doppler parameters, the (E/E’×S’)
ratio, used for the left ventricle non-invasive filling pressure determination and for the
assessment of prognosis in patients with severe LV dysfunction or severe mitral
regurgitation. Another original idea is represented by defining a new speckle tracking index
that is evaluating global longitudinal LV strain and torsion, index that is useful in a better
global LV function evaluation and also for the prognosis of patients with heart failure and
for the evaluation of chemotherapy induced cardio toxicity.
The manager of the project is author in 3 books published in CNCSIS recognized libraries,

Taking into account all this innovating ideas, the manager of the project summarizes a total
number of 30 citations, of which 19 in ISI journals, 2 in international monographs and 9 in
other international journals. 4
His publishing activity is recognized and appreciated also by currently being a reviewer for
some important international journals, such as: Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine,
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, Journal of Pharmacological and Toxicological
Methods, International Journal of Cardiology, The Anatolian Journal of Cardiology and
Experimental & Clinical Cardiology.
His scientific and managing skills are also highlighted by winning the competition for no
more than 5 research projects, as well as by participating in other 6 national projects as a
member of the research team.
Giving his great managing and leadership skills, the project manager is, since 2013, the
head of the Interventional Department of the Institute of Cardiovasculare Diseases (ICVD)
Timisoara. Morover, Dr. C. Mornos is coordinating Sub-National Programs for
revascularization of patients with acute myocardial ST elevation segment infarction and
respectively, the Sub-Program for Coronary Percutaneous Intervention in the south-west
part of the country.
Next to interventional cardiology, another major fiels of interest for the project manager is
represented by echocardiography. As a recognition of his medical and scientific activity in
this field, in 2014 Dr. C. Mornos is becoming a candidate for the position of Secretary of
the Echocardiography and other imaging modalities of the Romanian Society of
Cardiology, position that he is currently attending.
Coordinating this project might contribute to a better research in the fiels of coronary
heart disease, taking into account his great experience built by participating in a multiple
number of research projects. Dr. C. Mornos not only has the ability, expertise and
experience that are allowing him to manage this project, but also to coordinate the
research team activity.

Indeed, at this moment I am not planning to attend Pittcon, but it is really a very interesting
conference. I never attended it before, so I will think about the opportunity to attend this year.
